Diospyrus kaki 'Nishimura Wase'

Commonly known as CoffeeCake in the United States. A richly-flavored variety that ripens a month before Fuyu. It ripens in climates with summers too cool to consistently ripen the non-astringent variety Fuyu. The fruit is large and roundish. It is called Coffee Cake for its rich flavor and brown flesh color when ripe. It is a non-astringent pollination variant which means when pollinized it develops its rich and sweet flavor best. It's also non-astringent when it is pollinized, and astringent when grown solo. Chocolate is the best pollinizer.

The tree is vigorous and easy to grow - disease-resistant and reliable once established. Give regular water all summer to prevent fruit drop and keep ripening fruits juicy. Low chill at only 100-200 hours at 45F.

USDA Zone: 8-11

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Pls need to know if you've for zone 5 and dwarfs ones. Thx.

Asian persimmons are not zone 5 plants. You will need an American persimmon.

  • Is this persimmon more like a Fuyu, eaten crisp or slightly soft?

Yes, if cross pollinated by another persimmon, like Chocolate, it is non astringent. When it is grown without cross pollination it tends to be more astringent.

  • How long will it to fruit?

Persimmon, once established, fruit usually between somewhere between 5-7 years from planting.

Disappointment in a box

I spent approx. $100 for a stick that I can only hope will someday grow into a tree. I have been a loyal Raintree customer for over 20 years and like the variety of plants you offer. But the tree that came was small, had no branches (the small one it had was broken off) and looked very stressed. I was going to plant it in a special spot, but decided that I had better put it in a pot to let it grow for a few years before I plant it in the ground. I was sadly disappointed.
