QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Will the Akane grow in zone 7 and if so, what other types will it cross pollinate with?

Yes, and it will cross pollinate with any other non-triploid apple in bloom groups 1-3. Check out our Apple Growing Guide for a full breakdown of apple pollination and your options on a handy chart.

  • Is it possible to obtain an Akane tree on standard rootstock?

We do not carry it on standard stock at this time.

  • Does this Akane apple tree cross pollinate with Honey Crisp? And how many chill hours? I am zone 9

Akane does not cross pollinate Honeycrisp, they are too far apart in bloom times. Akane requires 800+ chilling hours.

  • What is the Blooming Time ?

This apple is a bloom grouo 2 - check out our Apple Growing Guide for more information on apple tree pollination and a bloom time chart!

A problem with the rootstock

We loved our Akane apples, and the tree was lovely. I have many photos my late husband took of the blossoms and fruit. But it blew over completely in a windstorm. Should I get a tree that roots more deeply?

Phenomenal tree quality

I’ve ordered from 4 distributors, and Raintree quality and packaging care was far and away the best. I’ll be a returning customer

Beautiful Tree!

My tree arrived dormant but started to sprout in less than 2 weeks. The leaves are beautiful, and I am not sure if this is normal, but I had blooms (a lot) and the smell was pleasantly fragrant ( I wish I could make it into a parfume).

Excellent quality!

A great early apple

I live in Eastern Washington at the base of the Huckleberry Mountains and this apple has been wonderful. It seems to survive everything the climate up here throws at it and still have a respectable harvest. I use it for fresh eating, applesauce and apple chips . If you hate using chemicals like I do get this apple. I have never had to spray it and have had very few bug issues, just a little hole every now and then. A reminder: the birds love them because they are the first apple to ripen. I always have half a dozen or so that end up in the compost pile!
