Malus domestica 'Hudson's Golden Gem'

It was discovered as a fence row seedling at the Hudson Nursery in Tangent, Oregon, about 1931. Because of its brownish color and elongated shape, it was originally marketed as a pear. One of the tastiest russetted apples, the flesh is crisp and sweet, and the flavor is nutty and refreshing.

It is productive, annual bearing and somewhat scab - and mildew - resistant. The medium-sized fruit will hang on the tree well into winter. Good keeper. Ripens late October.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a Hudson's Golden Gem tree. I live in Seattle, and I do not have any other apple trees. There are some other apple trees within 100 yards, though. How close does the pollination helper tree need to be, and could you recommend a couple varieties for our climate?

That is close enough, but you will need to have cross pollination via compatible bloom times. Check out our Apple Growing Guide for a full pollination explaination and chart.

YUM!!

I had my first fully ripe fruit this year from my Hudson's tree. VERY sweet and nicely crisp. I am really picky about apple flavor - and this one really is very very good. Both of my kids enjoy it too. I thinned the trees pretty heavily and the resulting fruit is rather large.

My only regret is buying this on the most dwarfing rootstock. In the fall, the deer like to come into the yard and nibble away any fruit trees that are within their browsing height. I've got the tree covered with bird netting for now, as a deterrent, but I may have to replace with a bigger tree at some point.
