Asimina triloba 'Benson'

Selected at Kentucky State University for its heavily productive, early-ripening, round, tasty fruit. It has a delicious flavor with hints of mango and pineapple, and a rich, fruity aroma. It is widely adaptable and an excellent choice for areas that have cooler summers.

Unusually disease-resistant with pretty, smooth, green skin when ripe. Hand pollination will increase fruit set, alternatively, adding a small pile of decaying meat to the base of each tree just before blooms open will bring in the flies and beetles that pollinate these unusual trees. Shade from direct sun during first 2 summers - even mature trees may benefit from afternoon shade in hot climates. Also protect young trees from slug and snail damage.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Chill Hours Needed: Unverified; most require between 100 - 400 hours

Mature Height: 10'-15'

Sun: Full Sun to Part Shade in Hot Climates

Ripening Time: Early/Fall

Pollination: Need Pollinizer

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I have planted pawpaws at my woodland edge, morning sun until about 1:00 p.m. They are 6 years old, have not produced fruit, growing slowly. If I plant two in my orchard (full sun), how do I "shade" them part of the day the first two years as you recommend?

Shade cloth setups are commonly used to get new paw paw trees through those first 2-3 years. You may also not have the right pollinators as paw paws are fly pollinated, not bee pollinated, and you may need to increase the number of flies you have near them seasonally.
