Vitis labrusca 'Campbell's Early'

An early-ripening, seeded, Concord-type grape, also known as 'Island Belle'. It ripens and has been grown for many years in much of the Pacific Northwest where Concord doesn't get the heat to ripen. Originated in Arkansas in 1892, it is a large, purple, slipskin grape. Enjoy the rich, sweet and strong Concord-style flavor for use in jelly, juice and wine.

Chill hours: undetermined. Spur prune. Cold hardy to USDA Zone 5.

A grapevine can be both a highly productive source of fruit and a focal point of considerable beauty. Think carefully about where to plant one to provide shade, cover a wall or accentuate an arch. We offer grapes most of which will ripen even in areas with cool summers. The ripening dates listed are for the cooler parts of Western Washington, but most ripen sooner and thrive where summers are warmer.

Delicious

In Connecticut, Concord grapes have a bitter after taste and are disease prone. However, Campbell Early is quite delicious and fairly disease resistant. I love the taste of these grapes - rich Concord taste but sweeter and without the astringency or bitterness.I grow these organically without sprays. One of my favorite table grapes.
