Diospyrus kaki 'Jiro'

A classic, non-astringent Asian persimmon that can be enjoyed when firm or fully soft. When firm, the taste is rather like a melon; when fully soft, the flesh is pudding-soft and richly sweet. The Fuyu-style fruit is round, squat and flat with a glossy, orange skin and sweet, mild flesh.

The trees have a graceful, layered form and glossy, medium-green leaves during the growing season. In Autumn, the leaves turn vivid shades of orange, amber and sienna, and after leaf fall the stunning orange fruits hang like little jack o'lanterns on the branches. A real show-stopper! Be sure to provide regular August water for optimum fruit set and development. Low chill: 200 hours. Early bearing patterns may be erratic.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Hi, your listing says the size is 15’ and then later on it has under “size options” an entry saying “semi-dwarf, 4’-5’”. Can you please clarify?

15' tall is the mature height (estimated). 4'-5' tall is the height when shipped. It is grafted to D. lotus, a semi-dwarfing rootstock for Asian persimmons.

  • Can you comment further on the statement "Early bearing patterns may be erratic"? How long might this pattern persist (e.g., five years after planting)?

Persimmons tend to reach maturity at around the 8 to 10 year mark (roughly 5 to 7 years after planting) and may take an additional 3-4 years to establish a regular bearing pattern.

  • What type of rootstock is this tree?

    D. lotus

  • Is this a bare root or sold in a pot?

This is sold as a bareroot tree.

  • Is this tree grafted?

Yes, this tree is grafted to D. lotus rootstock

  • Would it be alright to plant a semi- dwarf Jiro Fuyu in a container I live in Ca. 95648 my soil not good where I live. Ron

It would need a lot of irrigation in a large wooden or clay pot, but it's possible. No small or black plastic pots.

  • What is the caliper of the trees when they ship?

    1/2" to 3/4"

  • could you specify what kind of jiro persimmon tree is this? Thanks.

Jiro is the varietal. Fuyu is the style or type of persimmon (non-astringent).

  • There are different types of jiro. What kind of jiro persimmion is this one?

Jiro is a kind of Fuyu persimmon and is the name of the variety. There may be other derived from Jiro, but this is the original.

  • Could you share more information for the dwarf persimmon tree? Are they also going to be about 3 years old when shipped? And what is the mature height? When will it start to produce fruit? Will it have the same amout and quality of the fruit as the non dwarf kind? Thanks.

This is a semi-dwarfing tree, not a dwarf, that is 3 years old when shipped. As it says on the product page the average mature height is roughly 15' but your mileage may vary.

  • how tall will be the shipping size for the dwarf one? And how long will it take to start to bear fruit?

Approximately 4'-5' tall and they can take a number of years. It depends on how well watered it is and how fast it can establish. Usually 5-7 years after planting.

  • About how tall and how old are the trees when they're shipped? Thanks!

3'-5' tip to tip when shipped and 3 years old

Very good purchase

The persimmon arrived within a week of shipping. It was a stick with no branches or buds. I sprayed off the roots that were packed with a hydrogel that appeared to keep the roots from drying out during shipping. Soaked the roots in water for about 30 minutes before planting I. A pot. The potting mix was mini-pine bark nuggets(Lowe’s), cococoir, peat moss, Scott’s top soil and miracle grow cactus palm and citrus. Within 2-3 days it’s already pushing buds.

Fuyu Persimmon

Our Fuyu Persimmon arrive right on time. It was professionally packed and arrived in great shape. We received a heads up a few days before it was shipped to get the planting location ready. Excellent Service!

Persimmon tree not quite what I expected

My tree arrived on time as forecast by Raintree. I was expecting a tree with defined branches and a good root system. The roots look great but the trunk of the tree was just a stick with no branching. Not a problem but I can't give a total review until summers end and I see what branching occurs. Not a big deal. I have always had good results with RainTree bareroot trees.

Was worried at first when I received it because the roots were black but it is showing buds right now after eight days post planting. Happy so far.

too soon to tell

Right now, it's just a stick in the ground. The roots need to grow, then the buds need to turn into leaves.
