Ficus carica 'Petite Negra'

This "little black" fig packs a big punch! Able to start producing fruit when less than 12 inches tall, Petite Negri is a natural dwarf that only grows to 4-6 feet at maturity. Will produce 2 crops in warm locations; the beautiful dark fruits have a wine-red interior and a fantastic, richly sweet flavor. Very similar to Violette de Bordeaux, but slightly earlier to ripen and more dwarfing form.

Well-suited to pots or planted in-ground in warm zones, they can also be grown in pots planted 3/4 into the ground in lower zones, then sever the roots that have escaped into the surrounding soil and lift the pots for storage in a lightly heated greenhouse or enclosed porch. Leaves will drop in winter, then bring the pot outdoors and let it settle into the previous years' hole and enjoy the summer outside!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • When should I prune my petite Negri fig which I purchased from you at least 12 years go? It is in a pot and is stored in the garage from Nov to early April. We are gone during the time it is in the garage. If we prune it in April, will we get fruit that year? It has been a prolific performer. Thanks Sue H Walla Walla

You should prune during dormancy, before you leave. Figs are produced on the new leaf nodes, so if you are careful not to remove those you should be fine.

Figs on the coast

I had this variety on the Oregon coast and it grew well planted outdoors in the ground. It would set a crop once a year and I enjoyed the dark fruit late summer.

Plant arrived healthy

I think the package should have included detail instructions regarding replanting (outdoor care) and repotting (indoor care) written for gardening neophytes.

Mixed results

I ordered two Negri Figs and they arrived in perfect season and well packed. 3 stars because one is thriving and the other had crispy leaves upon arriving and I am uncertain if it will survive.
