Cydonia ablonga 'Van Deman'

Developed by famed plant breeder Luther Burbank in the late 1800s, Van Deman continues to be a standard against which all modern quince varieties are measured. Early-ripening, with unusually large fruit colored a sunny, clear yellow. The elongated, pear-shaped quince is heavily fragrant when fully ripe, and the healthy trees are quick to start bearing huge loads of fruit each year.

At the turn of the 20th century almost every rural family had a fruiting quince tree. The varieties we offer have delightful pineapple-like flavors. They are prized for baking, jelly making, and adding to apple ciders. Quince trees are self fertile, with showy white blossoms in late spring.

Resilient and Healthy

Communication around delivery and its arrival condition were impeccable. I was able to refer to Raintree's instructions and helpful YouTube videos for the best ways to prepare the bare root tree for planting (shoutout to Alaska Fish Fertilizer, that stuff is amazing!). Through some wild weather swings so far this year, some aphids and Japanese beetle infestations, the young tree has been remarkably resilient. Even with these few snags and a few munched leaves, I've seen over 12 inches of growth in 4 months and it appears happy and healthy (and bug-free) going into Month 5. I look forward to revisiting this with a new review once the tree begins to bear fruit in a few years.

Overall, I'm very impressed and satisfied so far.
