A fabulous edible ornamental houseplant. The babaco is a hardier relative of the papayas commonly seen in the grocery store. It is native to cool high mountains in the Andes and can briefly withstand 28 degrees F. It has a beautiful trunk and tropical leaves and is easily grown in a container, in a sunny window or greenhouse. Pot grown papayas (15 gallon pot works well) grow 4-6 feet tall and produce several amazing looking ten inch long bright yellow papayas each year. The flesh is a yellow color with a refreshing flavor. Cut the fruit in half lengthwise and add a glaze of sugar or honey. Refrigerate overnight and enjoy.
