Luvall's Monster Grafted Chesnut
Castanea crenata/dentata x mollisima 'Luvall's Monster'
USDA Prohibits shipping chestnuts to Arizona.
Luvall's Monster chestnut is an American-Chinese hybrid, cold-hardy cultivar bearing extra-large sized, Chinese-type chestnuts. This older variety was grown by Verne Luvall in his orchard in Galesburg, IL. Though they can be as much as twice as productive as Chinese varieties, they are pollen sterile, so they need good pollenizers nearby. Not reliably blight resistant, but for growers without blight pressure, the dense, sweet nuts are huge and easy-peeling.
