Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward'

The grocery store standard fuzzy kiwi. Hayward is a female vine that grows hundreds of large, juicy, delicious fruits each year. The fuzzy vines are long, robust growers that create a luxurious tropical feel wherever they are planted. Make sure to provide a very sturdy trellis for these quick-growing perennial vines! Fruit can be harvested at maturity, before fully ripe, and kept cool or refrigerated, where they can be selectively ripened and enjoyed for up to 6 months!

Fuzzy female kiwis must be pollinized by the Male Fuzzy kiwi. Hayward requires about 800 chill hours to reliably bloom and set fruit each year. Full sun and a nice long, hot growing season will help Hayward fully ripen all its glorious fruit.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I purchased two kiwis from Lowe’s in Downingtown Pennsylvania, six years ago. This is Southeastern Pennsylvania. Both are females could you recommend a male plant to fertilize these

Any male kiwi will do. We carry them as "male arguta kiwi" and "male fuzzy kiwi".

  • How do I order a fuzzy male counterpart or will ordering an even number of plants ensure male/female mix?

Our male fuzzy kiwis are sold under the product "Male Fuzzy Kiwi". You need roughly 1 male for every 8 females.

  • How long does it take to start bearing fruit, if i purchase the 1-gallon Pot.

Fuzzy kiwi can start bearing quickly, if there is a male to pollinate it, within 3-4 years on average.

Powery mildew

We planted the kiwi plants the day after pickup and within a few days powdery mildew covered the most of the plants' older leaves. New emerging leaves didn't have it. I didn't have any other plants around the planting site, and I don't know how the kiwi were exposed, but I promptly sprayed with copper sulfate.
