Mespilus germanica 'Breda Giant'

A native to Holland, this small, self fertile tree will grow to about 10 feet and display white flowers which produce a unique 1 inch fruit. When collected in the fall, they are then left to blett in a cool lighted place until soft and ripe. Enjoy the rich, apple cinnamon flavor scooped out with a spoon or make into a delicious jam. They can also be eaten out of hand and the unusual, triangular seeds can be spat out as you find them.

Although little known in the U.S., medlars have been grown in Europe for thousands of years. The unusual 1 inch diameter round fruits are collected in the fall, after the first frosts.

This 1 tree survived and came back strong this spring. All 5 never leafed out last year but some how one did this spring the rest were crispy twigs after winter dried them out

Neat tree

Arrived a dormant bare root. It has leafed out and added some new height to it! I first saw these in the UK last year and immediately went online to find a source in the USA that had some. Thank you for having a good selection of cultivars! I am really excited about these!

Great looking tree

It made it all the way to South Georgia without issue. These are extremely rare in the southeast, so I am excited to finally have one for my home orchard. I soaked the roots in a bucket of water for 1 hour, planted it in the ground, and now 4 days later it is pushing leaves out. Very satisfied.

Appears to be nice thick trunk with multiple stems. Is dormant so will be nice to see it leaf out. Hadnt heard of these before our trip to the UK so glad to see a USA company carry them!

Fruit??

This is a pretty, little tree, attractive in many ways. Mine has produced a lot of fruit BUT even when allowing them to blet properly, they are dry, mealy, with little taste. I have'nt been able to find out if I'm doing something wrong. One review claimed that the "giant" fruited meldars were tasteless and recommended medium ones. If anyone knows how to get the Breda Giant to produce sweet, juicier fruit, I'd love to hear about it.

I am a little concerned. The medlar was a bare root tree and it's been in the ground for almost two weeks and nothing is leafing out yet. I am in both sandy soil and a drought so I have watered it everyday. I soaked it 3.5 hours before planting. How long does it take for bare root trees to leaf?
