Smallanthus sonchifolius

Yacon is a perennial plant grown in the mid-elevation Andes for its crisp, sweet-tasting tuberous root; delicious eaten fresh. The texture and flavor is a cross between a fresh apple, watermelon and celery. Above ground, the plant looks like a sunflower.

In Northern areas, plant after the last frost and harvest after the first few frosts have caused the tops to die back. While usable-sized tubers develop fairly early, they taste much sweeter after some frost. Yacon has two types of tubers: the deeper growing edible storage tubers and the much smaller edible propagation tubers which grow just under the soil surface. Delicious eaten fresh, baked, steamed, or squeezed for juice. Very easy to grow and harvest when grown in large pots. Sold in a 4" pot.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Are these invasive like sunchokes?

No. They do spread but not nearly as aggessively.

  • What is the difference between this and a sunchoke? So far, these appear smoother....

They are completely different plants, though they exist in the same family (Asteraceae) they are not in the same genus or species. Yacon tends to be sweeter in flavor and smoother in texture.

  • Would these be unattractive to deer? Always looking for deer-resistant veggies…

The vegetation itself may be edible for deer, but the tubers (the part YOU eat) should be left alone.

  • How many Yacon tubers come with an order $16.99 pot?

    1 tuber per pot.

I was really wanting to support you

I was really wanting to support you. I love the idea of what you are doing. However, the condition of the yacons I received is horrible. I have been sick so I wasn’t able to plant them right away. Then I was glad I didn’t put them into my garden to infect other plants. Like I said I’ve been sick so this is first chance to reply to this email. It’s past the 30 days since I received order. I don’t know if you will honor a refund or not? Please see pictures taken at a week and a half after received, if able to attached. They were by themselves during this time.

One plant received was just an empty pot

I ordered two Yacon plants. One arrived with leaves all torn but it survived. The other plant was missing and only a pot with soil with no plant in it was received. I contacted Raintree about this but it has been 3 weeks and no reply.

This is a unique plant to me, it came nicely packed and healthy green tops. Already in the ground and looking sturdy and happy. Excited to taste this wonder thing!

Yacon Plants arrived in Poor condition

I opened the box immediately upon arrival. The Yacon were in poor condition because the soil in the pots was totally dry. I had to remove many wilted leaves and then douse the plants with water immediately. Thankfully, they seem to be coming back to health. But that shipment was very stressful for them.

Excellent and great quality

I ordered some yacon plants that are temperature sensitive. They arrived in excellent condition and have established themselves nicely in my garden. Definitely recommend
