Malus domestica 'Cosmic Crisp'

This new red, juicy apple has a perfect combination of sweetness and tartness and is the first release from the apple breeding program at Washington State University. The plants are licensed and limited by WSU to ONLY be sold to people residing and growing the plants in the state of Washington. WE CANNOT SHIP this tree to an address outside of Washington State.

It is a cross between Honeycrisp, and the excellent keeper and scab resistant variety Enterprise. This apple has large size, crisp texture, great productivity and beautiful red color with white lenticels that sparkle like stars, thus the name ®Cosmic Crisp™. It blooms in mid to late season (category 4), and ripens late, between Granny Smith and Braeburn. Washington state apple growers are predicted to plant 11 million Cosmic Crisp™ and it is expected to become very popular with consumers.

Honeycrisp and Enterprise can NOT be used as pollinators for this variety, due to their genetic similarity. Any other varieties that bloom in categories 3, 4 or 5 may be used as pollinizers.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • pollinator for cosmic crisp and Honey crisp? Are they good for western Washington?

Check out our Apple Growing Guide for a pollination chart. The tree appears to produce and ripen well even in the Western WA.

  • what types of other apples work as a pollinizer

Check out our Apple Growing Guide in the Help Center for a full pollination chart for the apple trees we carry.

  • Would this apple grow in North Georgia

Hard to say. Currently it cannot be shipped or planted outside of WA, per the patent, until after 2028.

  • Hi I looked at the Apple growing guide for pollinating. I can can see cosmic crisp. But I have a gala and 2 crabapples which don't appear in the lists. Will these be effective for cross pollinating cosmic crisp? Thanks

Thanks for checking out our guide! Gala is a bloom group 4, which is the same as Cosmic Crisp, so you should be just fine.

  • How far out will the roots of a dwarf cosmic crisp spread?

    Roughly 12-14 feet.

  • Hello! I'm curious as to how growing this new apple only in WA state helps the folks who did the research in introducing this variety recoup their costs. I'm in WA and can't wait to plant one soon! Thanks.

Cosmic Crisp was developed through a partnership between Washington State University's WSU Apple Breeding Program and a collective of apple growers thoughtout the state that allowed WSU to use a significant portion of thier land, rent free, to plant and care for millions of trees during the 22 years of research and development. Part of that deal was that those farmers, and farmers like them in WA, would have exclusive growing rights until 2028 to recoup their investment as the only farmers in the United States that can grow and supply Cosmic Crisp apples to the greater national apple market. Hope that helps!

  • What varieties does the 3 Tier Espalier version of the Cosmic Crisp come with?

    It is all Cosmic Crisp.

  • I have a gala apple tree that grows and produces quite well here in shelton. Will this tree pollinate the cosmic crisp? I do not see it in your apple growing guide.

Gala is a bloom group 4, and so is Cosmic Crisp, so yes!

  • I have a backyard with five apple trees that are blooming now. If I out my cosmic crisp in the front yard, will that be close enough, or is on the other side of the house too far away?

Probably yes. Pollination is better with line of sight for pollinators, but they will find it anyway. It's plenty close enough.

  • The do the trees bloom?

All fruiting trees bloom, some more colorfully than others.

  • Why are they only being sold in Washington State ??

Cosmic Crisp is licensed and limited by Washington State University, who did the breeding and primary investment in the development of Cosmic Crisp. The tree itself can only be sold to, and grown, by WA state residents until 2028.

  • What is the largest caliber cosmic crisp tree's that you have ? I'm looking for 3.

Tree caliper is roughly 3/4" and all are the same size.

  • what is the mature height of the available cosmic crisp Dwarf and Semi dwarf both show 4-5', yet description says mature height of dwarf and semi dwarf of 11 and 16' respectively. Shipment still possible? Thansk,

The height of the semi-dwarf tree, when shipped, is 4'-5' tall and it will grow to around 16' tall at maturity. The height of the dwarf tree, when shipped, is 4'-5' tall and it will grow to around 12' tall at maturity. Shipping for these trees is available only during the spring shipping season.

  • I currently have both the Honeycrisp and Enterprise trees that I purchased from Raintree some years ago. The Enterprise is nearly immune from both Diseases and Insects so does the Cosmic crisp retain those advantages?

It retains some of the qualities of the Enterprise, but not to the same extreme degree. Cosmic Crisp has a thicker skin than Honeycrisp, which gives it many of those resisitances and a longer shelf life, but not as thick as Enterprise.

  • Can a crab apple tree be used as the pollinator for a cosmic crisp?

If it blooms late enough yes. Crababbles that bloom in Bloom Group 2 or Bloom Group 3 will work.

  • Will cosmic crisp trees ever be able to grow in Minnesota? I would be willing to try a test tree here. I live in central Minnesota.

WSU has a geographical patent limitation on them until 2032. Ever? Yes. Soon? No.

  • Is it against the law to buy a tree in washington and then bring it home to California to plant it? I'm old. I cant' wait until 2027.

Yes, it is very much against the law. This tree is licensed by Proprietary Variety Management, on behalf of WSU, exclusively for purchase and growth within WA state. Anywhere else, or even propogating them without a license within the state, is a serious patent violation.

  • Can I grow one Honey crisp and one Cosmic Crisp apple trees in my yard so they can pollinate each other? If not, please advice another third apple tree that can pollinate both honey crisp and cosmic crisp apple trees. Thanks,

You will need another mid to late season tree, that is not a Honeycrisp or Cosmic Crisp as they are too closely related to cross pollinate. Please refer to our Apple Growing Guide for a complete list.

  • Will this cross pollinate with a Pink Pearl Apple Tree?

No, they are too far apart in bloom time.

  • Why can’t we grow it in OREGON, your neighbor? Love this apple. Only want 1 good tree. Please advise as soon as we can get it.

Because WSU recieved funding from the Washington Apple Growers Association for the development of the variety and in doing so agreed that the variety would be region specfic until at least 2027.

Top Notch Nursery

When I had a question about one of my trees, Laura responded to my email within two days. She also gave good advice about what to do with a sick tree and shared a video to demonstrate what to do. The weekly videos are not just entertaining, but offer good common sense suggestions.

Cosmic crisp

I received the tree in a short time. The roots came wet and wrapped which is perfect. I planted the tree and in less than a week the tree took and has started to produce leaves. My family is super excited and we will be buying again. A 99% success rate is what sold me. Now you can add to that 99%. I recommend Raintree Nursery. Thank you!
