This patented, self-fertile clone has the complex flavor, mellow aftertaste and captivating aroma of the famed Cox's Orange Pippin. Queen Cox sets bumper crops of delicious fruit each year, without a pollinizer, even when fruit set is poor on other apples, including other Cox-type apples. The fruit of Queen Cox is larger and the tree more disease-resistant than the original Cox, but the fruit retains the firm texture and complex sweet/tart flavor that has made the Cox family of apples justifiably famous.

Fruit ripens in early September. One of the very few reliably self fertile apples suitable for most American gardeners. Requires approx. 800 chill hours to successfully bloom and set fruit.

  • How wide should a trellis be for the 3-tier espaliered Queen Cox?

    As small at 6 feet, or as wide as 16 feet, depending of what you're looking for in the final shape and size.

  • Will this tree pollinate other apple trees in the same bloom group?

    Yes, and in adjacent bloom groups!

  • How big will 3-tier espalier tree grow?

    This rootstock grows to 16 feet tall, but you should be able to train and prune it to whatever size you require.

  • When does this apple tree leaf out usually?

    Apple trees can take 4-6 weeks to leaf out after being in cold storage. If your tree does not leaf out by then please contact us for a credit or replacement.

  • I purchased the Mini Dwarf Queen Cox but it has two different sizes listed. Is it going to be 2-3' or 5'? How wide will it also be when fully grown? Thank you.

    The mini-drawf trees will be 2'-3' tall, which is already nearly 50% of their mature height already. It will be a whip and may or may not have side branching as much as 2 feet wide.

  • will my area Dahlonega Ga have enough chill hours for this apple tree?

    Probably not, you will do better with a Fuji like Beni Shogun, or another low chill apple.

  • Can a self fertile tree such as the Queen Cox be used to pollinate the Honeycrisp?

    Yes it can!

  • Will these survive triple digit weather with enough water? If not what breeds would be recommended to survive in zone 9 and triple digit heat?(cider apples as well not just fresh eating varieties)

    With enough water most trees can survive triple digit weather, but Queen Cox may require more chilling hours than you have. Low chill apples, like Beni Shogun, will produce better.

  • How large and how old do the 3-tier espalier Queen Cox ship?

    4'-5' tall and roughly 2'-3' wide. Box is only so big.

  • I need to replace a Belgian espaliered apple that has died. I was wondering if I would be able to prune your tree to fit my Belgian espalier frame? Can you tell me how large the tree is and ideally could you send a picture? Also when would you ship? I am in Maryland. Thank you!

    Any tree should be able to be trained for you Belgin Fence, so this would be fine. It ships as a 3-year old grafted tree with minimal branching. Shipping to Maryland begins in March.

Very good flavor

Queen cox has been reliably fruitful from even a young age. The flavor is tart-sweet, complex, and the texture is dense and not juicy. This would be a good one for eating fresh by slicing it thin with a good flavored cheese.

The first few years the fruit cracked, but seems to have outgrown that issue this year.

I used organza bags to keep pests out, and it seems to have worked well.

My garden is shaded around 3pm and these still manage to ripen. I pulled a couple off of the tree yesterday 9/2 and several more seem to need a touch more ripening.

Location is west of the cascades in Oregon, Clackamas county, 600 feet.

I've had a tree on the most dwarfing rootstock for a few years. These trees do tend to be the ones most browsed by deer - if deer are at all an issue consider a larger tree.

Early to say, but alive so far

Writing half a year after getting the tree. Arrived in good shape, roots were pretty damp and fragile and lost a bit while planting, but it recovered fine. Actually flowered a couple months in but no fruit, we'll blame how young it is plus the drought. It came already pruned a bit with a pretty good structure, kind of 2 tiers of 4 branches and a central leader. It shipped super early, had to ask them to delay it so the ground wasn't still frozen...

Perfect little queen

I thought long and hard about the right kind of fruit tree to bring into my backyard garden. Raintree had good selection and a strong reputation for plants in good health. I selected the Queen Cox dwarf for it's size. The tree came well packaged and is in great condition. It's planted now, still waiting for the CO weather to perk up and see the first buds. Very excited for this tree's future.

I had two orders they both arrived on the same day luckily for me it was a day off, and I was able to get them in the ground the same day. All plants were in excellent condition, pleased with service and everything.
