Malus domestica 'Rebella'

Skilled breeding develops great apples! This large, elongated red apple has a wonderful combination of sweet and tart flavors. It ripens midseason, in late September here in the PNW. Released in 2003, it's a cross between Golden Delicious and the unreleased Remo (James Greive x resistant clone), and the powerful, complex, sweet flavor shows the influence of both parents.

Its breeding for disease resistance really shines as well; it's resistant to scab, mildew, fireblight, pseudomonas, and red mite. Bloom category 3 midseason. This apple does great in maritime climates on both coasts!

Bella is a wonderful choice for backyard gardeners

I received one bare root tree that was about 5' tall in spring 2021. I was in a new home and didn't yet have the area properly graded so I planted Bella in a growing bag and kept it on the east side of the house throughout the summer. Bella spent the winter in my unheated garage and then in late spring 2022, I planted it on the northeast side of the yard (zone 5a). The next summer, Bella grew to about 6 1/2 ft and produced at least 20 - 24 very large apples. The fruit was moderately sweet but delicious for eating. I did use some of the fruit for an apple pie and that was delicious as well. Bella is cross-pollinating with a Johnny Appleseed variety that is planted about 9 feet away.
