Ribes nigrum 'Blackdown'

BLACK CURRANTS ARE PROHIBITED TO DE, ME, NC, NJ, WV, VA, MI, MA, NH, OH & RI. Rust resistant varieties may be shipped to OH & MI (with permit).

Large, jet-black berries, very juicy and flavorsome with a distinctive musky taste. Excellent in jams, jellies and juice. Vigorous bush with an upright growth habit. Resistant to white pine blister rust and mildew.

Black currants have outstanding health benefits, including high Vitamin C content, up to 5 times that of oranges by weight. They have twice the potassium of bananas and twice the antioxidants of blueberries. The antioxidants, essential fatty acids and potassium in black currants have anti- inflammatory impact, reducing the effects of arthritis. Its antioxidant action has been shown to help prevent cancer. The strong flavor of Black currants is highly prized in Europe, even fresh, but most Americans prefer them made into jam, syrup or dried as raisins. Partially self fertile plants produce best with another variety of R. nigrum for cross-pollination. Bushes will grow to 4-5’ tall. We offer well rooted 1-year bushes. USDA Zones 3-8.

Currant and gooseberry bushes arrived in excellent condition

The plant arrived in good conditions. It was very well packed.
It has been in the ground for about 1 week and green leaves have appeared. I am very excited to see how it grows. I love black currant juice and jam.

Best Berries for Jam EVER

The berries from my Blackdown currant bush make the BEST jams I have every had. Their dark musky flavor perfectly balances with the sweetness of the sugar giving a complex multidimensional flavor.

The plant itself is compact and vase shaped compared to other currant blushes, making it easier to maintain and harvest than current or gooseberry bushes.

For me in the Tri-Cities Washington area, this is my best and favorite currant (or gooseberry) to grow. I would strongly recommend it for people who like to make richly flavored jams, jellies, or syrups.

Very good producer

Produces a lot and is most vigorous of my 3 bushes (minaj and black september) but I like minaj the best for fresh eating and it's a close second in production. This one is a little more musky minaj is more berryish and sweet tart

Black currants arrived in great shape

I ordered three black currants, Kirovchanka, Belaruskja, and Blackdown based on reviews of growing habits and flavor of the berries. They traveled from the state of Washington all the way to New York state wrapped so carefully that they had new growth on roots and leaf joints. They were in moist wrapping and when planted started happily growing. Congratulations on a super job, Raintree Nursery.
