Chojuro Asian Pear

Update to a previous review. We have had our Chojuro for 5 years now. Last fall we got our first 6 pears. They were delicious. This spring the tree has hundreds of blossoms. We are psyched for a good harvest. Highly recommend.

We bought the Chojuro Pear from Raintree Nursery on a whim with a larger order of staple fruit trees for our homestead. This pear was placed in a less than stellar location (4 to 5 hours of sun) nestled behind a big Maple tree and surrounded by other mature trees. This little pear has never been fertilized, mulched, nor sprayed for pests. When I tell you, this neglected tree has been the most prolific, producing the sweetest and complex flavor of pear we have had! We are in zone 5a and these are the last crop to harvest for the year. Flavor intensifies after frost. They are fantastic fresh from the tree, or cut up and baked or put in scones (with cinnamon and cardamom spices it just rounds out Fall flavors). Our tree over the years has been so loaded with fruit it broke a major side branch in the third or fourth year, but sprung back the following year with no problems. And, with the exception of a red squirrel devouring them one year, NOTHING else touches them. Knock on wood, 15 years growing in Central NY, no bugs, no disease, no real pests getting to the fruit before we do. It is almost November here and we are still picking pears off the tree. They don’t drop prematurely. Majority of the pears that fall or become damaged are due to human error. I can’t say enough about this tree and would recommend adding one or more to your homestead!

Nice large bare root tree , roots are a little under developed, but i absolutely love this variety, have another i planted 3 years ago doing great

It is 8 days since planting, my whip is still in dormancy. The roots looked great when planting. Hoping it’s a great tree. Thanks Raintree!

Asian pear is already leafing out and I’m happy with it so far.

The tree is settling in well. It has 3 pairs of blossoms, and the leaves are doing nicely.

The size was pretty much what we expected and it's shaped nicely. We do feel it could have been taken care of better before shipping though.

Update- It grew very nice after getting it. It started waking up the past week and an half and is loaded with buds! Can’t wait to try this variety this year!

Both the Asian pears are off to a good start. Luckily for more than a week after planting, it has been raining or cloudy. Both trees are showing ~10 buds that i will have to remove to help growth.

The Chojuro asian pear did eventually leaf out and did well last year. This year, its 2nd year in the ground, it is doing wonderfully. I am very happy with the quality, vigor, and health of this tree.

This is my first purchase from Raintree Nursery. The tree arrived well packaged but looked quite muddy and kind of beat up. The buds looked questionable to me, but this is my first time growing an Asian pear so maybe that s just how they are. My other pear trees that I planted about 2 weeks earlier, which are both European varieties from different suppliers, have budded out nicely and have leaves. I planted the Chojuro Asian pear 10 days ago on 4/29 in my pre-prepared hole. It is now 5/9 and there is no sign of bud swell. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully it will bud out. The three star review is for the rough condition that the tree arrived in, and the fact that it has not budded out yet. I will update the review after (and if) the tree buds out. Keeping my finger crossed.
