Rescue European Pear

Received my pear tree and it was supposed to be 4-5 feet tall. Didn’t make 1 and 1/2 feet tall. On top of it it’s a whip. Where pruned look like someone chewed it off.

We planted our rescue pear from Raintree a few years ago, when it set a handful of fruit this year, I thinned it down to one, and let that one produce. So thankful that I did! We harvested in early September here in the PNW, let it sit on the counter for a few weeks, and then just tried it at a family bedtime treat. It was most similar to a really nice comice pear, buttery, firm texture, sweet and juicy. Had it protected in a nylon footie as it is near our apples that benefit from the same, and removed that the end of August to get a little more color. Just trimmed off the leaves that were affected by pear trellis rust, also present on our orcas pear, about 1/4 of leaves impacted on this young tree. Looking forward to future growth and enjoyment!

I'm writing the review almost three years after receiving the tree because I wanted to review the fruit as well. I planted the tree in Fall of 2022. The first year (23) no fruit set, the second year (24) a few set but all dropped in the the June drop. This year (25) I harvested about 8 pears, after thinning it heavily in June - there was no "natural" drop in June. I harvested them about a week ago and let them sit on the counter to ripen. They are juicy and the flavor is a little bit spicy - not super sweet like a Bartlett. I would highly recommend this pear. I live in Southern Oregon and the tree did fine in our hot, dry summer with 2x/week watering.

Purchased three trees from Raintree. Two European pear varieties and one apple. The apple and other pear are thriving. But this pear despite receiving the same care and the same environment didn’t make it. I’m very disappointed.

I ve had a Rescue for about 5 years now and it seems to be reliably building production each year, last year was my first large crop. Ripens at least a couple weeks later than Bartlett in my location (lowland valley east of Tacoma). My old Bartlett gets scab so bad that many years I get no edible fruit as it is to mangled and cracked and rotten even before being near ripe; but the Rescue is hardly effected. Though last year the skins on Rescue were almost leathery thick and they had a lot of grit cells, fortunately both could be fixed by peeling. I can t say if the grit cells were caused by the cultivar, harvest timing, fertilizer, or weather, i hadn t noticed the grit in other years but then I also didn t have as many fruits to sample. I also can t say they stored any longer than any other typical summer pear, but I just tossed them in the spare fridge might have been too cold or humidity wrong.
