Rubus subg. Rubus Watson 'Columbia Giant'

When we say Columbia Giant, we're not kidding! Enjoy bountiful crops of the largest-ever, thornless blackberries. The mild-flavored fruit is firm and easy to pick, conical in shape, and sweet - with a pleasing touch of tartness and just a hint of raspberry flavor.

It is a new introduction from Oregon State University and the USDA, proven to thrive and be hardy in the Pacific Northwest and many other areas of the nation. Ripens early summer - early July here in the PNW. The plants are trailing and vigorous, and would benefit from trellis support. Expect 10-15 pounds of berries per crown.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 6

Mature Height: 6'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: Early

For best berries it needs full sun. It is not shade tolerant and cannot live in full shade.

  • How early should I plant these in zone 6?

  • Do I need a pollinator with the Columbia Giant blackberry?

Not at all. As with most blackberries, these are self fertile.

Bountiful, flavorful, and a lot of fun to share

We've trellised these on arched cattle panels with great success. Avoid the temptation to pick too early! 2025 season, we started harvesting late July in Zone 8b (northern Olympic Peninsula), with plenty of green berries still waiting to ripen. We'll never stop growing these bad boys.

Great size, but can't handle hot summer

The berries did great until we had an unusually hot summer (108 for two days). Plants wilted in the heat and the berries never fully ripened.

Buy with confidence! I'm looking forward to these healthy and thriving little 4"*4" potted starts. They arrived well packaged and as expected. They immediately started to develop leaves and now branches in just a couple short weeks.

Small plant

Hi Gerry, thank you for your feedback on the Columbia Giant Thornless Blackberry. We apologize that the plant you received was on the smaller side. Given that plants are not manufactured components, there can be natural variations in their sizes. However, please know that our Raintree Guarantee covers all our plants, from the day you received it until August 1st of that same year. We stand by their quality and guarantee that they will arrive alive, well and true to their labeled name. We have a 99% success rate and are confident that with proper care, your plant will leaf out. If for any reason it fails to do so and you believe it was defective, please notify us by August 1st of the season you purchased it. You can find more information about our Raintree Guarantee on our website. Hope this helps. Best, Jacque

Showed up as just a stick, which I expected. With in a week it started coming to life and has been growing a little bit everyday. Couldn't ask for more. Also no bugs which is great!

Plants were quite full of foliage, and very lush

Stabilization in transit might be better, but they weren’t tossed too much

I’ve certainly received worse from others

an excellent start

The raspberry arrived in excellent condition. I am planting it inside a 27 gallon storage container(with lots of holes for drainage). It is inside a fence, to keep the deer away from it. It is doing well, going to sleep for the winter.
