Shekinah 'Tahi' Black Raspberry
The Shekinah ‘Tahi’ black raspberry marks a significant advancement in berry breeding as the first fully spineless black raspberry worldwide. Developed by Harvey Hall at Shekinah Berry in Auckland, New Zealand, “Tahi”—meaning “Number One” in Māori—perfectly reflects this trailblazing cultivar. Its defining characteristic is the complete absence of spines, a trait introduced from the red raspberry’s ‘Burnetholm’ variety. Unlike the traditional spiny black raspberries that require careful handling and protective gear, ‘Tahi’ is far easier to cultivate and maintain. It grows vigorously with an upright habit, simplifying management compared to the usual arching growth of conventional types. This cultivar produces large, firm, deep black berries, each up to 4.5 grams, clustered on long, spineless laterals. The fruit offers a rich, intense black raspberry flavor and is harvested mid to late summer, closely aligning with the ‘Jewel’ variety’s season.
