Rubus fruticosus x idaeus

This heavy-bearing backyard winner, a cross between Aurora blackberry and a tetraploid raspberry, was developed by Derek Jennings at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in 1980. Vigorous, arching, thorny canes produce large, flavorful berries that are very long, narrow and rich maroon when ripe. The flavor is a bit sweeter than a loganberry, with more of a pronounced raspberry character.

Tayberry can be grown in a sprawling clump, like a blackberry or a black raspberry.

  • Will Tayberry grow in southern Nevada? I get so excited about your many berries.

    Southern Nevada may be too hot for Tayberry. If you choose to try it, keep your Tayberry in a shaded location, especially after mid morning. I can thrive in partial shade and will not tolerate midday or afternoon sun in your area.

  • Are these self fertile?

    Yes they are

  • Do they need support such as like a traditional raspberry trellis

    No they don't get nearly as large, but they spread more quickly.

  • What in-row spacing for tayberries?

    4 foot centers is usually acceptable for Tayberry.

  • Can Tayberries, Boynesberry, and Marionberry all be grown on the same trellis system? Or should they be grown away from each other?

    They can all grow together if there is enough space to manage them!

  • Are the tayberries floricane or primocane bearing?

    They are floricane bearing.

  • What are their light requirements?

    Full sun to partial shade.

  • Do tayberries produce fruit within the first season it's planted?

    Usually yes!

  • What variety of Tayberry and Marionberry do you sell?

    Our Tayberries are the original from Tay River Valley in Scotland. Our Marionberries are true Marionberries, not to be confused with the several Marion-like-berries that have been developed to ripen earlier or later.

  • What cultivar are these tayberries? I bought one and especially need to know for future pruning as, like their raspberry progenitor, there are primocane varieties and floricane varieties.

    These are the original cultivar of Tayberries from the Tay River Valley in Scotland, which would make them floricane bearing.

  • Do these fair well in containers?

    They do, but they will need extra irrigation.

Plant arrived in excellent condition, but has not grown as quickly as I had hoped. However, it is planted in an area with mainly clay soil and gets quite a bit of shade. I’m guessing it would do better in better growing conditions. Still, it is growing some.

Excellent healthy plants

Tayberry shipment

I received my four Tayberry plants a couple of weeks ago. They were healthy plants which arrived well packaged for their trip, supported within the box and taped so the soil would stay in the containers no matter what shippers did to the package! I've ordered plants from other suppliers and that was not the case; Raintree really knows how to ship their plants so they arrive in the best shape.
