Pyrus communis 'Abbe Fetel'

Named for the French Abbot who developed the cultivar in 1866, it is today the leading pear variety in Italy. Italians and tourists rave about its wonderful flavor. It ripens mid season and is large and elongated with yellow skin and a red blush. The flesh is white, melting, juicy, sugary and aromatic and it is fabulous eaten with a low salt cheese.

It can be fireblight and scab susceptible. Considered an "all-purpose" pollinator since it's in bloom category 2 and has overlapping bloom timing for many European pears. Somewhat low-chill, and even in some locations self-fertile, but will obviously do best with a pollinator.

Thoroughly satisfying pear

My tree started to fruit after three years. Pears are as described by Raintree, medium large, elongated, yellow with a steadily deepening blush on the sunny side. I ripened for only two days, so they stayed firm, but were exactly as Raintree says, "juicy, sugary and aromatic." A great breakfast pear. Well worth planting.
