Pyrus communis 'Bartlett'

The most popular pear in the U.S. and Canada, and also in Europe where its called Williams Pear. Usually self-fruitful and reliably productive, Bartlett is the quintessential "summer pear", much anticipated for fresh eating.  It's also the primary pear used to make the French pear brandy "Poire Willams".

Fruit ripens in late August to early September, and can be stored if picked just as their stems snap when the fruits are pulled to a horizontal position. The large pears turn yellow with a pink blush as they ripen. Needs 500-600 chill hours to reliably set fruit.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Will a Bartlett pear and Shinseiki Asian pear pollinate?

No, they will not. European pears require another European pear to pollinate.

  • Do they need a pollinator and if so, what would be a good one?

Bartlett is an early blooming European pear, so it will cross pollinate with any other early or mid season blooming pear. Check the European Pear growing guide for a pollination and blooming chart.
