Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Grow Height:  12'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: August

Pollination: Self Fertile

Rootstock: Dwarf St. Julian, Semi-Dwarf Marianna 2624, Semi_Dwarf Krymsk 1

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Are these trees grafted and how long before they bear fruit

They are grafted and within 2-3 years after establishing. Plums can take longer than apples or pears.

  • What is the difference between semi-dwarf and dwarf and how tall will each grow? Thank you

In plums the difference is about 2 feet in height and width.

  • How old are these that are shipped?

3 years old and 4'-5' tall when shipped

  • What are the chill hours required for this tree and how long before bearing fruit? I'm a Master Gardener in Houston,Texas, but I loved eating them from the trees by the railroad tracks during my childhood in Iowa. I'm giving it a wing either way, but would like to know more. Thanks and I'm eagerly awaiting my tree!

    Roughly 800 chilling hours

  • How tall are the trees at shipping? 2-3ft, 3-4ft, or 4-5ft? Thanks!

These trees are 4'-5' tall at shipping

  • When can the plum tree be planted

We will ship this tree to you when the planting time is right for your zone. Typically early spring through early summer is fine, as long as the daytime temperatures remain below 70 degrees.

  • How old are the trees you are selling?

2-3 years old at the time of shipping

  • Does the Italian prune have any resistance to black knot?

No. The only european plum bred for black knot is President, which we do not currently carry.

  • How wide does the tree with Krymski rootstock grow?

    14-16 feet at maturity.

  • Is the Italian prune, European Plum self pollinating? Is there a specific tree that is recommended as a companion for cross-pollination? Thank you!

It is self fertile and blooms so late there is poor pollination overlap with other plums.

Prune plum lovin'!

I LOVE Italian prune plums! They can be found all over most of Europe - eastern and western Europe! These plums, make the BEST plum butter and plum cakes. Anything coming from Raintree is in perfect shape to plant. Follow their suggestions and you'll succeed each and every time. I always buy here.

I watched your video how to plant it, maybe it is

I watched your video how to plant it, maybe it is still dormant. No buds. Maybe I did something wrong. I will try next year.

Very happy

We received our Italian Prune Plum tree from Raintree Nursery a few weeks ago, and we’re very pleased with it. The tree arrived in great condition, and we were pleasantly surprised by its height and overall health.
It’s now in the ground and already showing strong signs of life, with buds forming and beginning to leaf out. It’s exciting to see it adjusting so well so quickly.
We’re looking forward to watching it grow and would definitely consider ordering from Raintree Nursery again.

Surprise in the second year

The Italian prune I planted in 2024 bloomed in 2025 and I thought I had pinched off all the blossoms but I missed on and in September of 2025 we found one small plum and though it was small it was wonderful

Italian Prune European Plum Semi-dwarf

So far so good. My Italian Prune European Plum (semi-dwarf) arrived April 29th. It was in its dormant state. I followed the recommended instructions and it is finally budding out! I am very excited about this purchase.

Plum tree

Arrived which looked like just a stick. Soaked in water overnight and planted. Within a few days had buds coming out all over. Have to admit, I didn’t have much hope for tree but now just have to wait till tree matures and we get fruit

Nice plant

After having bad luck with two different Italian plumb trees purchased elsewhere, I got this one and it is growing like crazy. First bare root tree I have ever gotten with a decent amount of roots. I will definitely be buying more from Raintree in the future.

The tree came on time. I soaked roots in water for two days and planted; the tree started leafing almost immediately.
Nice healthy seedling.

My plum tree arrived, healthy, and strong

My plum tree arrived healthy and strong. They included great instructions about planting and what to do if you had to wait to plant it like I did. It is now in the ground and has sprouted tons of leaves and looks very happy. I’m excited to get plums at some point!

Fruit Trees from Raintree!!

I ordered a few other fruits with this Italian Prune Plum. I received great alerts from Raintree that my package was arriving. My box arrived on schedule and was expertly wrapped. I had watched the videos Raintree had provided about the trees. They were still dormant and a week later, after being planted, they are beginning to bud. All arrived in good shape and on time. Very Pleased!!

Have doubts about the ratio of roots to trunk but

Have doubts about the ratio of roots to trunk but will have to wait and see. Trunk is a sturdy measured three inches around most of its length. The problem is only one root with several smaller roots coming from it. Planted but with reservations.

Healthy plants & great packaging

My 2 prune trees arrived in great condition! I followed the detail instructions…. The plants are very healthy. But the weather was weird, so I put them in buckets with moistened sawdust and kept them in our guest shower for about a week. My son helped me planted them in 25 gallons pots today. The roots are growing and some shoots are starting to come out!!! Can’t wait to see them bloom!!!!

Early in the Process

Our tree arrived in great shape, while surprised it looked like a stick (no branches) with well formed roots. It IS healthy and has many buds awaiting the weather to warm up and sprout. We're looking forward to seeing how it comes along. Reading past reviews, we'd like to know how these are doing 1, 2, or even 3 years later. An update on how well they are doing now.

The tree looks great

The tree arrived in March, was in good condition, and was planted immediately. It didn't bud for awhile because of cold weather. Once spring finally arrived, buds appeared. These have grown into young branches with dark green leaves. Four months after arrival, the tree looks great.

Italian Plum Tree

Tree arrived in very good condition. It a very sturdy stocky barefoot tree. Nicer than trees I’ve received from other companies. I planted it 2 days after receiving it. It’s doing great. Has a few small buds starting to emerge. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy the plums soon. Thanks Madeleine

Best condition so far.

My Italian plum tree arrived in better condition a than all my other trees that I ordered and planted this year. We planted 12 fruit trees in total fro 3 different suppliers and the Italian plum from rain tree nursery was the most established and in the best condition out of all of them. The trunk is the thickest out of all the others. We planted 5 apple trees all of them 3-4 feet tall a couple of them arrived with no branches and as thin as a pencil ( no more than 3/8”at the graft zone). This Italian plum is 3-4 feet with a trunk 2&1/2” across. If they have what I’m looking for in their inventory again I would definitely order from them again

All good

Our tree arrived when promised, very well packed with no damage. It had been well-pruned but was still a decent size. We soaked the roots for about 10 hours then planted largely as recommended. Within a few days we saw budding, so all seems well!

All's well that ends well

Arrived in April as scheduled even though ordered in December. Tree was healthy. Our weather remained unusually cold through April and into the first week of May, however. Consequently, the tree did not sprout until the second week of May. Coming along nicely now. All's well that ends well.

The Start of Our Frui Garden

We decided to start a small fruit garden for our grandkids, and I wanted the Italian Prun which it appeared was not too easy to find. I wanted it to be an established one, so it would be easier to take care of it. I found what I wanted in Raintee nursery.
Although we had to wait for some time for tree to be delivered, we are happy with our purchase. The tree came accurately packed, and what is very important - professionally pruned, so we just had to plant it according to the instructions sent to me via email,
Now we are waiting for it to wake up. There are little buds appearing, so our tree should be fine. We just need to see the leaves to be completely sure.
Thank you, caring guys from Raintree nursery, for the nicely done order and the nice Italian Prune tree which, hopefully, will give us so desired fruits! In a couple of years

Perfect prune tree

Can't wait until the tree wakes up and starts to get leaves. I am from Switzerland where this prune tree is one of the most important trees. The fruit is used mostly for the best quiches ever.
