Madeleine des deux saisons Fig

I received my Madeleine des deux fig in March 2024 in great condition w/leaves & buds. I planted it in my backyard against our home's foundation on the southwest facing side where it gets the most sun & warmth. (I learned from my neighbor years ago how to grow & care for a fig tree.). Our soil here in DE is clay, but with conditioning set it in the ground, covered w/mulch and provided water. That winter was a cold one and I covered the whole little tree with a winter cloth bag w/zipper from Amazon to protect it, but found in the Spring 2025 the main branch off the trunk died and there were still 3 little branches still alive. It grew well that year with the branch towards the house growing strong and tall. I tied it to a plastic post and trained it to become the main trunk. For the winter I decided to purchase burlap; wrapped all the branches + trunk, and put a coconut mat around the base.. It did great surviving the severe winter with snow + ice storms and high winds we get. In the Spring it had main growth from both sides and also at the top. The middle of the trunk showed new growth. I wasn't expecting any figs as I've read before that sometimes it can take up to 5yrs for figs to grow well & ripen. Well, my fig has been a very happy one and loved all the hot sun and warmth being close to the house too. I gave it in the Spring fertilizer for fruit & flowering trees. It's only 2yrs old and I counted 20 figs in total growing. This August I have been harvesting dark colored figs with wonderful red insides that are absolutely delicious & sweet. I wasn't sure if this particular fig was supposed to turn a dark purple when ripe and wondered if I was sent the wrong fig (although the tag on the tree did say Madeleine des deux). Maybe because of all the sun & heat it receives the figs turn a really dark color? It doesn't matter I am extremely happy with my fig tree! The figs are about 1 inch in size and I found with the humidity the skins can start to split. So I went out daily to check for ripe ones. The tree is already at 7ft tall. I will again cover the entire fig this winter with burlap to protect it. Eventually it will adapt to the cold and I won't have to wrap it as much. If you love fresh figs as much as I do this is a wonderful tree to get! Thank you Raintree Nursery!

Plant looks great and arrived quickly. I have up-potted and fertilized and plant looks great. There was NO PLANT TAG with the product. I was told to buy or make one from customer service. I believe a Poor answer. Have bought multiple times from Raintree and will continue to because they have quality products for the PNW region.

The fig tree arrived end of April in great conditions. In less than three weeks the main stem showed first five little buds, then five little leaves, and then five little branches. I give it a lot of water every day because the soil is very dry here in Eastern Wahington. It looks now a happy little plant. Thank you!

Raintree's catalog suggests these figs grow on the "cold and rainy coast of Brittany," which is not unlike Washington's northern coast. I've tried Sultane figs, which failed, and Desert King, which developed a full root system but little above ground (which I discovered when I dug it up). I'm determined to grow a good fig, however, envy those in Oregon and southern WA who are succeeding, and am willing to give it another try with the Madeleine, which Raintree also says "succeeds where others fail." We'll see. As for the condition of the plant received: excellent, as per Raintree's usual high standard.
