Malus domestica 'Northern Spy'

Northern Spy has thin skin and very crisp delicious flesh with a sweet/tart flavor prized for cooking and fresh eating. It is among the best keepers. It is winter hardy. These outstanding qualities make many people throughout the U.S. grow it despite it being biennial and taking a few extra years to come into production. It blooms late in the spring and ripens in November making it too late to fully ripen in cooler parts of the Pacific Northwest.

  • How long before you can expect apple's?

    Typically in about 2-3 years, depending on your location.

  • Is Northern Spy spur or tip- bearing? I am thinking to espalier one on the dwarf rootstock.

    Nearly all apples are spur-bearing, including Northern Spy. It will take to being trained as an espalier just fine.

Awesome Experience

Arrived in great condition and packaged with great care. You can tell you take the extra time to be sure they’re packaged in the best possible way for them to survive being sent across the country. Totally recommend you guys. One thing I would suggest is something in the box or on your website about how far to space the other apple trees so as they’ll pollinate the ones that we purchased. Thanks for a great experience!

Very disappointed!

The pear tree I got at the same time is budding beautifully and the apple tree looks like it is dead! I don’t know what happened but I am very disappointed.

Northern Spy Apple tree

So far so good. Been in the ground 13 days, still dormant. However, I believe I'm beginning to see buds forming. Hopefully not my imagination!! Tree arrived larger than I thought it would be. Overall, thus far, I couldn't be happier!!
