Malus domestica 'Scarlet Sentinel'

Scarlet Sentinel bears delicious red apples that ripen in the mid-late summer; enjoy a classic McIntosh-style crunch, even if you don't have a lot of space! Bloom is early-mid, category 2.

Columnar apple trees are trees that produce their fruit on spurs along the main stem. Columnar trees combine disease resistance, flavor, and ease of growing in small spaces, as each has a narrow, upright habit. Ideally suited to grow in a container, on a patio, or as a small tree in the ground, trees grow to about 10' tall and only 2'-3' wide.

Like other apples, you will need two different cultivars for pollination. Requires 800 to 1200 chill hours to bloom and set fruit reliably.

  • Can I plant columnar apple trees in July?

    You can, but you will need to water it daily to keep up with the transpiration rate during the summer months. Trees do better when they have time to establish a root system in cooler weather like spring or fall.

  • What size of container would I need to plant them in?

    For the whole of thier life? At least a half wine barrel (22 dry gallon) pot.

  • How close do pollinator trees need to be? Thanks!

    Within 300' and in line of sight for most pollinators.

  • Can only a Columnar apple pollinate another Columnar apple, or can I use a standard apple to pollinate a Columnar apple?

    All columnar apples are McIntosh variaties and are compatible with all other apples.

Giving columnar apples a try

I bought this apple along with Blushing delight to have a balance and pollinator help. Both arrived well packaged and ready for planting. They are planted in 5 gal buckets at present, waiting for larger pots as their final home. So far, so good! I have leaf buds appearing and they are well anchored on the roots. I applied mychorizae the roots at planting. Thanks Raintree!

Well, thanks again for a great bareroot little tree, packed with care as per usual, nice root system, nice thick trunk, already leafed out since receiving and planting on the 29th of May been 6 days and doing wonderfully. Can't wait for apples

Can't say enough about Raintree. Good options, wrkd with to get early, packed super moist plastic, big ball of strong roots, planted right away by Raintree online instructions. Less than 2wks budded out. These should cool. Raintree has an instructional videos on all sorts of plants.
