Prunus persica var. nectarina, aka Prunus persica var. nucipersica
Nectarines are a wonderful tree fruit, originally from Armenia by way of China. They are technically peaches; one different genetic allele makes them smooth! Nectarines are self-fertile, but will set more fruit with another nectarine or peach as a pollinizer. They prefer warm and dry weather to thrive, so keep that in mind when deciding where to plant them in your yard or orchard. They are one of the most beautiful fruiting trees: rich red new stem growth, colorful and fragrant pink blooms in spring, and a slender, graceful form.
Nectarine fruit is usually clingstone, highly flavored, and with a slightly firmer flesh than its peach siblings. Delicious!
