Passiflora incarnata

Commonly known as Maypop, this member of the passion flower family blooms and fruits outside down to as low as USDA zone 6! The only common Passiflora native to N America, this useful plant has edible leaves, flowers and fruit. Valued by native peoples for its sedative, relaxing qualities.

Like most maypops, once established it can handle freezes with no problem and will regrow year after year! The vines can be trained along a trellis or fence, but prefer to grow freely as compact growth tends to inhibit flowering and fruiting. Will be evergreen in the warmer zones of its growing range.

Hardy to USDA Zone: 6

Grow Height: Indeterminate vine

Sun: Half Sun in hot climates to Full Sun in cool summer areas

Ripening Time: Late Summer - Fall

Pollination: Self Fertile

Didn’t know what to think at first

Didn’t know what to think. The stems pulled out like twigs w no roots and everything was crispy, breaking off almost to the base. Of course I reached out & I was told it was dormant. Understood…even though I had my concerns. I waited and checked after putting it outside and now I see all of these little shoots popping out. I wonder if it is the MAYPOP or some kind of tag along weed.,I will see in a few days & repot or transplant into a bed.

Tough little plant 🪴

I received my plant right on time, gave it a quick welcome tour of the porch… and then promptly forgot about it for, oh, just 4–5 months. Classic me. When I finally opened the box (with a healthy dose of guilt), I was greeted by some very crispy stems—definitely not the plant’s fault.

But to my surprise, the soil was still moist—clearly tougher than me—so I decided to give it a shot and plant it anyway. Fast forward a few weeks, and what do I see? Tiny green vines making a comeback like it’s starring in a plant-themed underdog movie!

Can’t wait to watch it grow into its full glory. Huge thanks to Raintree Nursery for sending a plant with more patience (and resilience) than I deserve!

Amazing other worldly flowers

This plant took right off and has produced about 4 blooms in the 1st year. The flowers are amazing and smell fantastic!

I'm in zone 8b incase anyone in the area wants to know how well they do.

These small vines died within a few weeks.

I ordered both a Maypop and Pinkpop Passionfruit vines last year and they were delivered a few weeks ago.. they did not survive. I was surprised on how tiny they were too.. Everything else I have received from Raintree was nice and big.

1 of 2 plants in rough shape out of the box...

I received one plant in very good shape, but the other had several broken stems, was withered and discolored, and may have been tethered too tightly to its supports at the base of the plant. I cut what may have been too tight, planted both, and they're both looking fantastic now with new growth a little over a week after planting out.

Awesome Maypop

I've been searching for a decade for a real incarnata. Why it's so rare nowadays is beyond me. I've ordered from other places and it's never worked out, either being sickly plants or different species. Raintree sent me a beautiful, healthy plant about 3 feet tall, safely packaged. Very happy with my order and will order again.

Passiflora Maypop

Raintree sent me a very well grown substantial plant. It was the best packaged live plant that I've received in over 7 years of gardening. We'll see if it thrives in my windy garden, but it certainly has a good head start. Thanks.

I received a healthy Maypop

I have been waiting over a year to purchase a Passiflora incarnata. I kept coming back to the Raintree Nursery website to check availability. Finally, I signed up to get an email when the Maypop was available, and I was so pleased to get notified when it was in stock (in the past, I have asked a different nursery to let me know when they got a plant in, and they never contacted me, so it's really nice to know that Raintree Nursery actually follows through).
I ordered the plant and was referred to Raintree's calendar that indicated when the Maypop would ship to my area. It arrived in beautiful shape shortly after the ship date, and I have planted it. We are still having freezing temperatures at night, so the Maypop isn't doing much, but it still looks healthy. I'm looking forward to seeing it grow and mature. and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it bloom.

Maypop a hit in my garden

The company was very responsive to my questions and instructions for planting Maypop vines in my new sun garden. They are still babies but growing stronger everyday. I can’t wait to taste the fruit! I used to live in South Africa and it was my favorite fruit.
