Passiflora incarnata

Commonly known as Maypop, this member of the passion flower family blooms and fruits outside down to as low as USDA zone 6! The only common Passiflora native to N America, this useful plant has edible leaves, flowers and fruit. Valued by native peoples for its sedative, relaxing qualities.

Like most maypops, once established it can handle freezes with no problem and will regrow year after year! The vines can be trained along a trellis or fence, but prefer to grow freely as compact growth tends to inhibit flowering and fruiting. Will be evergreen in the warmer zones of its growing range.

    It is considered invasive in parts of California, Hawaii, and Florida.

  • What are the right zones for fruit?

    The optimal growing temperatures for passiflora are 68 to 82 degrees in a humid termperate to tropical climate. Passion fruit likes full sun, but harsh full sun, such as afternoon sun in some areas, should be avoided since it does not like hot, or dry heat.

  • Can this tree grow well in Dallas, Texas?

    Yes, passionfruit vine should do well in Texas with ample irrigation. Without enough water it will not produce fruit.

  • In areas where it dies back to the ground, how much growth would you expect it to put on in a typical season?

    Passiflora can grow upwards of 6 to 8 feet in a single season with the right location and irrigation.

  • Will Maypop fruit ripen in the Tacoma WA area?

    In certain microclimates yes.

  • Hi, how long will passiflora maypop take to start fruiting? I live in Boston (7a). Does it need any protection in the winter if I grow it in my backyard? Also may i know how does the fruit taste like? Is it more sour than sweet? Thank you!

    Unripe maypop is quite sour and it may not fully ripen in your region. They can be grown outside, but will die back to the ground in the winter and rewgrow the following year.
