Cornus mas 'Red Star'

Prohibited to FL

Originally known as Vydubetskyi, this Ukrainian cultivar - the breeding work of Svitlana Klymenko - was released in 1990 from the Hryshko National Botanical Gardens in Kyiv, operated by the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. Average fruit weight 6.5g. Sugar content 7.5%. One of the most productive cultivars - average yield from a mature 15 year old shrubby tree is over 100 pounds! Ripening time is the latter part of August for this pungent, delicious, glossy dark red, oval fruit averaging 1 1/4 inches long. Makes great preserves. An outstanding edible ornamental, with its foamy yellow haze of tiny flowers covering the tree in February!

Wonderfully cold hardy and resistant to insects and disease. Needs another Cornus Mas variety as a pollinizer.
