Asimina triloba 'Susquehanna'

Breeders' favorite, due to its large fruit size, few seeds, rich and sweet paw paw flavor, and firm but melting texture. Reliable yields and a durable skin round out this Southern beauty's desirable characteristics. Late to ripen, and well worth the wait!

Hand pollination will increase fruit set, alternatively, adding a small pile of decaying meat to the base of each tree just before blooms open will bring in the flies and beetles that pollinate these unusual trees. Shade from direct sun during first 2 summers - even mature trees may benefit from afternoon shade in hot climates. Also protect young trees from slug and snail damage. Needs 400 chill hours and 2200 Growing Degree Days (GDD) to set and ripen fruit.

USDA Zone: 5-9

Grow Height: 10'-15'

Sun: Full Sun to Part Shade in Hotter Climates

Ripening Time: October

Pollination: Need Pollinizer

Arrived in perfect condition

The tree arrived in perfect condition and well packed. Be careful of sun. I’m at 4K feet elevation and the leaves were sun burning. A shade cloth solves the problem.

susquehanna

As pawpaw trees sell out quickly these days, especially desired varieties I was pleasantly surprised to find Raintree had this one left as I was ordering late in the season. It came within a short time to NC and looks fantastic. I potted it up into a slightly larger container for now and it is really looking good. I plan on putting it in the ground next spring. Great quality tree! Thanks

Small and Arrived broken

Wish they offered more mature trees maybe then they'd survive the shipping process.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write a review of your experience. I am sorry to hear your paw paw did not arrive in good condition. We do have a very limited quantity of larger paw paws, and we are working to source/grow more. I see that we were able to issue you a refund for the one that failed to thrive. If there is anything else we can help you with, please reach out at help@raintreenursery.com! Keep growing, Rye (Customer Service Manager)

Didn't leaf out

Got 3 didn't Paw Paws and only this varity didn't leaf out this spring. Was in same shipping container, so it wasn't the soil. Sad I couldn't get a replacement as now I have to pay the pricy shipping cost again if I want another tree when it's in stock.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to share about your experience with this paw paw. It is strange that it did not thrive given that the other two did. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover shipping costs on replacement plants as our shipping partner determines the price and collects the shipping fees. However, please reach out to use at help@raintreenursery.com and we will see if there is another resolution we can find to help make things right! Keep growing, Rye (Raintree Nursery Manager)

A cutting with no roots. No wonder it never thrives

I’m so extremely disappointed and feel deceived.
I had concerns from the beginning when it arrived, so I messaged the nursery out of concern for a tree that was way too small and no foliage, weak and worried it would not make it.
They assured me that it was a grafted paw paw when you can see that it was propagated from cuttings, NOT grafted, it was not grafted on anything, and had barely any roots is maybe three so small that it is of no wonder that it never flourished. A very misleading claim on their site.
My message to them, “ I knew it would have no leaves, but this one is very small, thin, and looks weak for the size of the rootstock. I’m afraid it may not make it.
I based my purchase on your YT videos, and the tree I received looks completely different than what Mrs. Laura advertises on YouTube.”
I was thinking of giving it a bigger pot with amended soil just for this paw paw. It is not my first since I have a 5’ pawpaw on my orchard. I got that one from my local nursery. But this one from Raintree is nothing but a stick stuck into the soil.
Additionally, the green tape they attach to keep the “tree” or rather the body of it unto the bamboo, was way too tight and cut the tree’s circulation. Make your research before buying here. I feel it a blessing that I did not buy more because the waste of money would have been greater.

I feel horrible. I have traveled from coast to coast to get my trees, and a lot of other vendors shipped me trees and once I came across this store’s YT I felt hope that I might have found the companion for my other Peterson Paw Paw. Alas, that was never, ever going to be the case.
It is of no surprise now to me why they say “not to `disturb’ the roots.” what roots? There were none.
