Pyrus communis 'Duchesse d'Angouleme'

A russetted French heritage pear from 1815, prized for its extraordinary large size fruit and rich, juicy flavor. When well grown, the Duchesse D'Angouleme pear's flesh is white, buttery and fine with a rich, delicious flavor.

Features some fireblight resistance. Bears reliably and begins producing fruit at a young age. It blooms with Conference (early) and ripens in October (late). An upright, vigorous, hardy tree.

Delicious, sweet fruit with a vanilla fragrance when cooked.

I purchased this duchess D''A tree about 15 years old with the Morretini as a pollinator. The Morretini died of fire blight, this duchess has survived fire blight by pruning out the infected branches. The tree has not been properly pruned but it produces heavy crops biannually, 20+ bushels. Not sure what the pollinator is now because it's the only fruiting pear in the neighborhood that I'm aware of. I use the fruit for vanilla pear jam, canned with cinnamon and pressed for fresh juice.

No fruit, only tree

I have had this tree, among others, for over 15 years. Has not once produced any fruit. In spite of appropriate pruning, this tree is aggressive in re-growing more tree rather than producing any fruit. Ready to cut it down.
