Elephant Heart Asian Plum
Prunus salicina
Elephant heart plums are bigger than normal and usually measure 7-8cm across. The shape is oblong with rounded shoulders that taper to a point - almost heart-like! The skin is velvety, mottled yellow and ripens to purple-red. The flesh is firm, crisp and juicy - and the color varies from ruby red to golden. A fibrous pit sits at the center of the flesh, not firmly attached. Their flavor's tart, sweet and floral - with hints of vanilla and berries. These plums can grow in most US areas (zones 5-9) and need 650 chill hours (about 27 days with temps 45-32°F). Originated by Luther Burbank.
