Prunus domestica x insititia 'Reine Claude Doree'

Reine Claude Doree, considered "the original" and best of the Green Gage plums, is from France. It's a small yellow/green plum ripe in August or September. It has an incredible sweet, juicy flavor regularly measuring up to 30 brix! Notes of honey and apricot abound, with just a hint of citric tang to balance the sugar. This natural cross between the larger European and the smaller insititia types (that includes Damsons) is thought to have originated in Armenia, and was a prized trading item along the Silk Road. Now you too can grow a little piece of history!

Blooms late; choose another Gage plum for pollination. Prefers to grow in hot summer climates where the fruit can sweeten to perfection.

  • I have a green gage plum tree, but do not know which specific cultivar it is. If it is indeed a Reine Claude Doree, would a 2nd Doree be a suitable pollinator? or would a different variety/cultivar have to be selected?

    You would need another Gage. Purple or Cambridge are safe bets if you want to ensure success as neither are green.

  • How close does this have to be to another fruit tree for cross pollination to occur? I would have a fig tree about 20ft away and a peach tree, about 50ft from where I could plant this one. Would that work?

    You will another European plum within 100' to cross pollinate. Plums do not naturally cross pollinate with figs or peaches regardless of distance.

  • If I already have an apricot perfection tree that I just planted this year would that be okay to have as a pollinator for the reine claude doree plum tree? Or do I actually need to buy another plum? (as I don’t really want 3 fruit trees in my small backyard). If so can it be something else than a green gage? Is a European purple type plum possible?

    Apricots and plums bloom at completely different times. You will need another European plum, that is not a Mirabelle, for cross pollination.

  • Do REINE DE MIRABELLE EUROPEAN PLUM and REINE CLAUDE DOREE EUROPEAN PLUM cross pollinate? Thanks!

    They do! Doree is a Gage plum, which is an excellent pollinator for mirabelle plums.

The single young tree produced it's first 2 plums this year & they were amazing; buttery, great flavor, good texture. I'm so grateful the tree has survived in our tough environment here. I'm looking forward to pruning care now that it's fully established, am happily ordering another.

Wonderful Tree

I just got my tree in the mail. It is well branched out and looking absolutely beautiful. I've tasted this plum at a friend's house. I'm excited to grow this plum because it's the tastiest I've ever had.
