Prunus americana x salicina 'Toka'

Our hardiest Asian plum, it is so sweet, spicy, and fragrant, it is commonly called the Candy or Bubblegum plum! An Asian x American plum hybrid with small-to-medium size red fruit with yellow flesh that ripens in August. Toka was bred by Hansen in South Dakota in 1911 and more than a century later northern growers still prize it.

The vigorous, upright, self-fertile tree is covered with white blossoms in early spring, bushels of fruit in the summer, and beautiful red fall foliage. It is an excellent pollinizer; partners well with the hybrid plum Superior.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is Toka a good pollinizer partner for Emerald Beaut? Do they bloom at the same time in Seattle, WA?

As Asian plums all bloom within the same period, yes they will bloom at the same time in your area and cross pollinate.

  • How many chill hours?

Toka is a surprisingly low chill hour plum at 400+ hours

Awesome

Nice and big with big limbs tied back neatly. This was a bare root that came to me in the spring. The root system was large and in charge! Leaves sprouted right away and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I will be buying all my trees and plants here from now on. My only regret is that I didn't buy here sooner.

Arrived in good condition. Planted and now I wait. Small buds on branches are encouraging.

This sweet little tree was in great shape upon arrival! I plopped it in the ground as directed and it's already beginning to blossom. Can't wait to see how she grows!

Tree arrived with a damaged trunk

I won’t be buying from Raintree anymore. They used to be good but the quality definitely deteriorated over time. There are so many great options online and in-person now that it doesn’t make sense to pay a premium for this type of quality control issue.
