Corylus avellana 'Polly O'

Prohibited from shipping to Oregon.

This latest release (2018) from OSU allows growers to plant in a trio of filbert varieties (Polly O, Wepster and McDonald) that will cross-pollinate and produce high yields of nuts that are perfect for shelling, for fresh eating, adding to baked goods, or surrounding with chocolate. In fact, any early-blooming filbert (excepting the incompatible Felix and Hall's Giant) will provide successful pollination.

Polly O trees are the most vigorous and productive of the three varieties, so give them a bit more elbow room. Named for Polly Owen, a long-time Oregon hazelnut Industry official.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • A few years ago I purchased a York and a Yamhill from you. One of those died during a heat spell and the other survived with new growth coming from the base of the trunk. I am unsure if it is Yamhill or York that is still alive. Do you think Polly is compatible with my survivor?

It should be compatible with either

  • Is this self pollinating? If not, would I be able to plant two of this variety and still get good pollination?

It is not self pollinating. You will need another variety. All of our hazelnuts are cross compatible and blight immune. Some other varieties we do not carry may not cross pollinate even if they are different.

  • Would Polly O, Wepster, and McDonald be appropriate for my native edible landscaping in Maryland?

Absolutely, the advancements in blight immunity that these trees have make them good choices for most areas above zone 4.

  • None of these varieties are listed by OSU as Filbert Blight resistant. Jefferson, Yamill and Dorris are recommended. Is there a reason you do not offer these.

The hazelnuts we sell (Polly O, Wepster, and McDonald) are all OSU developed for Eastern Filbert Blight-resistance and are, in fact, considered improved over Jefferson, Yamhill, and Dorris in both quality and blight resistence. These modern cultivars require fewer pollenizers and produce larger nuts, in greater quantity than the three, you have mentioned.

  • hello, I have a "York" and "Jefferson" hazelnut. My "Theta" died. I am looking to replace my dead "Theta". I am thinking about getting three more bushes. Which of your available hazelnut varieties would be best to add to my orchard?

Good question! Hazelnut pollination is complicated, but fortunately Polly O, McDonald, and Wepster are all compatiable with both York and Jefferson (as well as each other).
