Fragaria moschata 'Profumata di Tortona'

The musk, or hautbois strawberry, is a species of strawberry native to Europe - found growing from Scandanavia, into Eastern Europe and south into Italy. They are cultivated widely in private home gardens as a rugged (and fragrant!) groundcover in both sunny and shady areas. The flavor is rich, sweet and intense - a cross of strawberry, raspberry and pineapple!

Both male and female plants are hardy and can survive in both cold winters and hot summers. 1 male plant will pollinize up to 5 female plants. Musk strawberries are cultivated commercially on a small scale, particularly in Italy. Fruits are slightly larger than Capron, and some will produce a small fall crop. Sold in 4" pots.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What do you recommend doing with runners? I am happy to let it spread but worried if this will affect the berry yield.

Runners will do nothing to reduce yield.

  • Which is the best male musk strawberry to use as a pollinator for profumata strawberry?

Male Musk or Russian Male Musk are the ones you're looking for.

  • How to specify male or female? Says it needs one of both?

This is a female, you can tell because it has a name. Males are unnamed and we sell them as "male musk" or "russian male musk". Both will work for the purposes of pollination.

Happy healthy plants

I ordered two female and one make strawberry. The plants arrived oh so wonderfully and carefully packed. They arrived quickly and without any damage. The plants are of good size, are healthy, and growing happily in my planters. Would buy again!

All my plants are taking well except for this one for some reason, it is showing the least growth and I really don’t want it to fade on me! No blooms yet, but my Russian male already pollinated my capron which made delicious berries! Hopeful it bounces in time and comes to fill up the spot in which I planted it like the other berries I planted!
