SALE - Buy 5 and get the 6th one FREE! Sale ends 3/2/25
Thornless blackberries are a cultivated variety of blackberries bred to eliminate the sharp thorns common to wild types, making them easier to harvest and maintain. These perennial plants produce sweet, juicy berries on biennial canes, meaning the canes grow the first year and bear fruit the second. They thrive in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). To grow thornless blackberries, choose a sunny site, amend the soil with organic matter, and plant them in rows or mounds to improve drainage. Provide a sturdy trellis or support system, as their trailing or semi-erect growth habit benefits from being trained for easier harvesting. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, and annual pruning to remove old fruiting canes and thin new growth help maintain productivity. With proper care, thornless blackberries can provide abundant harvests for years.

- Easy Harvesting: Without the thorns, picking berries becomes a delight rather than a chore, especially for children or those with sensitive skin.
- Simplified Maintenance: Pruning and training these plants is safer and easier, as you don’t have to navigate around sharp thorns.
- Abundant Fruit Production: Despite the absence of thorns, these plants do not compromise on the yield or quality of the berries.
- Adaptable Growth Habit: Thornless blackberries can be trained on trellises or supports, fitting well into both large and small garden spaces.
Caring for Your Thornless Blackberry Bushes
To ensure your thornless blackberry bushes thrive, follow these care guidelines:
- Sunny Location: Plant your blackberries in a location that receives full sun, which is crucial for optimal growth and fruit production.
- Soil Preparation: They prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Amend the soil with organic matter to improve texture and fertility.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the fruiting season and in hot, dry weather.
- Pruning and Training: Annual pruning is essential. Remove old canes that have fruited, and thin the new canes to prevent overcrowding. Train canes on a trellis system to support their growth and make harvesting easier.
