Goldenberry
Physalis peruviana 'Giant Goldenberry'
Giant Goldenberry is also known by the names Cape Gooseberry, or Peruvian Groundcherry. This beauty is a nightshade native to South America, producing delicious and incredibly nutritious large golden berries. Its fruit is approximately 3x larger than standard ground cherries, and the plant is bigger to match!
The velvety leaves and beautiful lantern-like calyx encasing the fruit give this plant excellent ornamental value. It is a rambling 3-5′ understory plant that can be grown as a long season annual in warmer temperate climates, or can be grown in a warm greenhouse to be perennial. The berries are very sweet with a complex and tangy/resinous aftertaste, and can be eaten fresh, be juiced, or turned into jams and marmalades.
