(Zingiber mioga) A hardy ginger that grows to 4 feet tall. The new shoots are blanched and eaten and the young leaves are edible. The white flower buds which emerge in late summer are used for tempura or sliced and added as a garnish for salads or sushi. This plant is unlike the ginger that you eat the large rhizomes. Prefers partial shade and well drained soil with plenty of humus.

Ask a Question
  • What does it taste like? Does it taste like traditional ginger root?

This is the ginger used in Japanese cooking. Typically the stem, not the root, is pickled and thin sliced. You have had it with your sushi.

Mioga Ginger

Bought one plant in 2022.
It wintered over and has spread here in zone 7
Low this winter close to zero F with wind added on top of that.
Ordered and received two more plants here in 2023
Planted under a couple of peach trees so they will provide some shade.
Expect to see some flowers this year so as to taste test.
So far so good.
