Bamboo

Hardy clumping Fargesia bamboos offer year-round evergreen screening, edible spring shoots, and elegant architectural form — without the invasive running habit that gives bamboo its complicated reputation. Matching species to your site is the decision that determines everything else.

Why grow bamboo?

Bamboo is one of the most functional landscape plants available: an evergreen screen that works year-round, a sound barrier that softens wind and noise, an architectural focal point with year-round visual interest, and — in the case of Fargesia species — a plant that stays where you put it. The running bamboos that have made the genus notorious for escaping gardens and colonizing neighboring properties are a different group entirely. Clumping bamboos like the Fargesia species at Raintree expand slowly outward from the original planting point, adding a few inches of new clump width per year, and require no containment barriers, no root pruning, and no annual alarm.

The shoots are a genuine edible bonus. New culm shoots emerging in spring are the same bamboo shoots found in Asian cuisine — tender, mild, and usable raw or cooked if harvested promptly. The established plant provides garden stakes from culled old canes. And through winter, when most of the garden has gone brown and bare, a mature Fargesia clump remains dense, green, and in motion with any breeze — one of the most visually satisfying plants in the cold-weather garden.

The most important decision you will make is choosing between running and clumping bamboo. All bamboos sold by Raintree are clumping Fargesia species. This distinction is not a minor detail — it determines whether bamboo enriches your garden for decades or becomes a neighbor relations problem within five years.

⚠ Running vs. clumping — the essential distinction

Running bamboos (primarily Phyllostachys and Pleioblastus species) spread via leptomorph rhizomes that extend horizontally underground, often 10–20 feet from the parent plant per year, and can emerge through pavement, under fences, and into neighboring yards. They require heavy-duty root barriers, regular rhizome pruning, and constant vigilance to contain. In some US states and local jurisdictions, planting running bamboo is regulated or subject to liability. Raintree does not carry running bamboo. All bamboos in the Raintree catalog are clumpingFargesiaspecies with pachymorph rhizomes that stay tightly bound to the original clump.

Understanding Fargesia bamboo

Fargesia is a genus of clumping bamboo native to the mountain forests of China, where it grows at elevations of 6,000–12,000 feet — exactly the conditions that produce its exceptional cold hardiness and its preference for cool temperatures and partial shade. The giant panda's primary food source is Fargesia in the wild, and the same characteristics that make it valuable panda habitat — dense, fine-textured foliage, strong upright culms, and high-altitude cold tolerance — make it outstanding in the temperate garden.

The growth cycle of Fargesia is distinctive and worth understanding. New culms emerge from the base of the clump in spring as pointed shoots. Each culm grows to its full height within a single season — a culm that will eventually stand 10 feet tall reaches that height in a matter of weeks, though it starts small in a young plant. Once full height is reached, that culm does not grow taller in subsequent years. Older culms are gradually replaced by new ones as the clump matures. The practical implication: a young plant in its first one or two seasons will produce short culms. This is normal establishment behavior, not a problem. By years three and four, culms approach their mature height.

ℹ Masting — a once-in-a-lifetime event

All bamboos in a genetically related group will eventually flower simultaneously — an event called masting — and then typically die after setting seed. This is a natural biological cycle, not a disease or cultural failure. ForFargesiaspecies, masting events are rare and occur on cycles of many decades.Fargesia murieliaeexperienced a major masting event in the 1990s; plants derived from post-masting seedlings are now well past the immediate risk period.Fargesia nitidamasted around 2004–2010 in many populations; plants currently sold are post-masting seedling generations and are not expected to flower for many decades. When purchasing bamboo, ask your supplier about the generation of the stock relative to its species' most recent masting event.

The two Raintree species

Fargesia murieliae — Umbrella Bamboo

The more arching and graceful of the two, with thin upright culms that arch outward at the tips under the weight of abundant small leaves — hence "umbrella." Hardy to approximately −20°F. Grows to 12 ft tall; clump width reaches 8–12 ft over many years. Prefers partial shade; tolerates sun with adequate moisture. Makes a beautiful specimen plant and an effective screen. The most widely grown ornamentalFargesiain temperate gardens worldwide. New shoots emerging in spring are edible.

Fargesia nitida — Fountain Bamboo

The most upright-growing of the Fargesia — narrower and more columnar than murieliae, with slender culms, fine-textured foliage, and excellent hedge-forming characteristics. Hardy to approximately −20°F. Grows 10–15 ft tall; the most vertical habit of all Fargesia makes it the better choice for tight screening. Performs best with protection from hot afternoon sun — site on the north or east side of structures in warm climates. Excellent garden stakes from mature culls.

Site selection and soil

Sun and exposure

Both Raintree Fargesia species prefer partial shade — dappled light or morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal. In the PNW maritime climate, both handle full sun well, particularly with consistent moisture. In hot, dry inland climates or in Zones 7–9 with intense afternoon exposure, afternoon shade is important: Fargesia foliage will scorch and brown in prolonged direct afternoon sun during heat events, and the plant responds by dropping leaves to reduce moisture loss. Fargesia nitida is more sensitive to hot sun exposure than F. murieliae; site it where it receives morning sun and afternoon protection in warmer regions.

Wind protection is beneficial for young plants in their first season. Strong, desiccating winds stress bamboo by increasing leaf transpiration faster than roots can replace moisture. A sheltered corner — against a fence, building, or established plantings — aids establishment and reduces winter leaf scorch.

Soil

Clumping bamboo thrives in rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0) with high organic matter content and reliable drainage. Waterlogged soil causes root rot and is the most common cause of bamboo failure in garden settings. Amend heavy clay soils with compost and sharp sand before planting; raise the planting area slightly if drainage is questionable. Bamboo's own leaf litter is a natural mulch that gradually enriches soil organic matter — allow fallen leaves to accumulate naturally around the base of established clumps rather than tidying them away.

Pacific Northwest tip

Fargesia bamboo is ideally matched to the PNW maritime climate. The mild winters, cool summers, naturally acidic soils, and reliable rainfall from fall through spring create near-ideal conditions. Supplemental irrigation is typically needed only in July through September. The primary site concern in the PNW is drainage in heavy, wet soils — raise the planting area by 4–6 inches if your soil holds water after winter rain. A south- or west-facing position is not required;Fargesiadoes well on north- or east-facing exposures where many other plants struggle.

Planting

Plant container-grown bamboo in spring or early fall. Spring planting is preferred in Zones 5 and 6; either season works in Zones 7–9. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the container and the same depth — bamboo establishes best when the crown is at or slightly above surrounding soil level. Backfill with the native soil amended with compost; water deeply immediately after planting. Apply a 3–4 inch mulch of wood chips, straw, or bamboo's own leaf litter over the root zone, pulled back 4 inches from the culm bases to deter slugs and prevent crown rot.

For hedges or screens, space plants 3–5 feet apart for a tight continuous screen (which will fill completely within 3–5 years), or 5–8 feet apart for individual specimens that will eventually merge into a loose screen. Position the male of each pair in the center of the row for best clump structure as the hedge develops. Planting in staggered double rows creates a denser screen more quickly than a single row.

Establishment and the "sleeps, creeps, leaps" cycle

New bamboo plants spend their first one to two seasons establishing their root system rather than producing tall culms. Growth above ground may be modest — short culms, sparse foliage. This is normal and expected; resist the urge to over-fertilize or move the plant. By the third year, the root system is established and culm height and clump density increase dramatically. By year four to five, a well-sited Fargesia reaches near-mature height and begins providing meaningful screening. The "sleeps, creeps, leaps" description of bamboo establishment is well-earned.

Watering and feeding

Consistent moisture is essential during establishment and through the growing season. New plants require deep watering two to three times per week for the first growing season; reduce frequency as plants establish. Established clumps need about one inch of water per week during active growth, supplemented by irrigation when rainfall is insufficient. In the PNW, natural rainfall typically covers needs from October through June; supplemental irrigation in July through September is important for best growth and to prevent leaf scorch during heat events.

Bamboo is a heavy nitrogen user during the growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer or one with slightly elevated nitrogen (such as a lawn fertilizer without herbicide or a dedicated bamboo fertilizer) in early spring as culms begin to emerge, and again in late spring or early summer. Avoid late-season nitrogen applications — they push soft growth that is vulnerable to frost damage. Alternatively, allow the plant's own leaf litter to accumulate and compost in place, supplemented with a spring compost application over the root zone.

Edible shoots — harvesting spring culms

The new shoots of Fargesia bamboo are edible and are harvested in the same way as commercial bamboo shoots. Shoots emerge from the base of the clump in spring, typically April through May depending on location and season. They are most palatable at the earliest stage of emergence, when they are still tightly sheathed and have not yet begun opening their leaf sheaths.

To harvest, snap or cut the shoot at ground level when it is 4–8 inches tall, before the sheath begins to peel or the tip opens. Peel away the outer sheaths to reveal the pale interior shoot. Unlike large commercial bamboo species, Fargesia shoots are relatively small — they are best used chopped or sliced rather than whole. They can be eaten raw in salads, stir-fried, pickled, or added to soups. Blanching briefly in boiling water before use reduces any mild bitterness.

ℹ Harvest selectively — leave most shoots to grow into culms

Each spring shoot that is harvested is a culm that will not grow to add height and density to the clump. On young plants in their first three years, harvest no more than 10–20% of spring shoots so the plant can build its framework. On a mature, well-established clump, shoots can be harvested more freely — a mature clump produces more new culms than it needs to replace aging ones, and selective harvest thins the clump naturally while providing food. Never harvest all shoots from a plant of any age.

Pruning and thinning

Established Fargesia clumps benefit from annual or biennial thinning of old culms to keep the planting open, healthy, and visually attractive. Remove the oldest culms — typically four or more years old, recognizable by their more weathered color and any die-back of small branches — by cutting them at the base with loppers or a pruning saw. Removing old culms improves air circulation, reduces disease pressure, and encourages vigorous new growth. Old culms can be used as strong garden stakes; they dry hard and last several seasons.

Height reduction is possible but changes the character of the plant dramatically. If topping culms for height control, do so in early spring before new growth begins. Cut culms cleanly at a node — the joint along the culm — as the stem is hollow between nodes and a cut between nodes creates an open hollow that collects water and rots. The topped culm will not regrow from the cut tip; it simply retains the new reduced height while side branches fill in below the cut. This produces a different, bushier appearance than a naturally arching Fargesia. For most screen plantings, allowing the plant to reach its natural height is the better approach.

Common problems

Leaf scorch and browning Most common issue

Brown leaf tips or wide spread leaf browning on Fargesia is almost always a cultural problem — hot afternoon sun, drying winds, inadequate moisture, or winter desiccation — rather than disease.

  • Increase irrigation frequency during hot or dry weather; Fargesia responds immediately to adequate water
  • Protect from direct afternoon sun in Zones 7+ — site on north or east exposures, or provide shade cloth in extreme heat events
  • In winter, leaf browning from desiccating winds is cosmetic — new leaves replace them in spring; a windbreak or burlap wrap on the windward side prevents it in severe cases
  • Brown leaves at the base of the clump through the year are normal leaf turnover; rake or allow to accumulate as mulch
Slugs Moderate — young shoots

Slugs feed on newly emerging bamboo shoots in spring, particularly in wet PNW conditions. Damage appears as irregular holes or shredding on tender shoot tips and young leaves.

  • Keep mulch pulled 4 inches back from culm bases — dense mulch against the crown creates ideal slug habitat
  • Iron phosphate slug bait (Sluggo and similar organic products) applied around the clump base in early spring provides effective control without harm to soil organisms or wildlife
  • Diatomaceous earth around the clump perimeter provides a physical barrier
  • Damage to established plants rarely affects overall health; priority protection is on young plants where slug damage can slow establishment
Root rot from waterlogging High — site problem

Bamboo planted in poorly drained soil or areas that hold standing water after rain will decline and eventually die. Root rot manifests as sudden culm dieback, wilting that doesn't respond to watering, and black or soft roots at the crown.

  • Prevention is the only effective treatment — site bamboo on well-drained soil or raise the planting area before installing
  • In heavy clay, incorporate 4–6 inches of coarse grit and compost to a depth of 18 inches in the planting area
  • If an established plant shows rot symptoms, excavate the affected crown area, remove rotted roots, and treat with a copper-based fungicide before replanting in an amended or raised location
Deer Low — established plants

Deer occasionally browse bamboo foliage, particularly in winter when other food is scarce. Young plants are more vulnerable than established ones.Fargesiais generally less preferred by deer than many other landscape plants.

  • Protect young plants with hardware cloth or fencing in the first two seasons in high-deer-pressure areas
  • Once plants reach 4+ feet tall and the clump is dense, deer impact is typically minor

Seasonal care calendar

Winter Dec - Feb
  • Foliage may brown or curl in hard frost — this is a normal cold response and not permanent damage; leaves uncurl when temperatures rise
  • Avoid walking on frozen or snow-laden culms — bent culms may not fully recover, though they typically do in spring
  • In Zone 5 and colder: apply a 4–6 inch mulch of dry leaves or straw over the root zone before the ground freezes to protect rhizomes
  • Check for slug activity during mild spells; apply bait proactively if slugs are active
Early Spring Mar - Apr
  • Apply balanced fertilizer or compost over root zone as soil warms; nitrogen drives new culm production
  • New shoots begin emerging from the base — watch for the earliest shoots for harvest if desired
