Blackberries

From the trailing marionberry of the Pacific Northwest to upright, thornless varieties suited to gardens nationwide — blackberries are among the most productive and adaptable brambles a home grower can plant. Matching type and variety to your climate is the key decision.

Why grow blackberries?

Blackberries (Rubus species) are among the most productive and forgiving brambles in the home garden. A well-established planting produces abundant fruit for 15 to 20 years with relatively little input, and modern thornless varieties have removed what was once the most significant objection to growing them at home.

Oregon is second only to Serbia in global blackberry production, and the Pacific Northwest maritime climate — warm summer days, cool nights — produces berries of exceptional flavor. Home-grown blackberries at peak ripeness, eaten the day of harvest, are categorically different from the commercial fruit picked early for shelf life. The difference in flavor is striking.

Blackberries are also exceptionally versatile in the garden. They can be grown as a productive hedge, trained along a fence, or managed on a formal trellis. Trailing types produce the most intensely flavored fruit; erect and semierect types are easier to manage and better suited to colder climates. Primocane varieties add another dimension — fruit on first-year canes that extends the harvest season into fall.

The most important decision before planting is understanding cane type and growth habit. Floricane and primocane varieties are pruned differently. Trailing, erect, and semierect types have different trellis requirements and spacing needs. Getting these choices right before you plant determines how easy the planting is to manage for the next two decades.

Understanding blackberry canes

Blackberries have a biennial cane life cycle with perennial crowns and roots. Understanding this cycle is essential before any pruning decision makes sense.

ℹ Primocanes vs. floricanes — the essential distinction

Primocanes are first-year canes — vegetative, non-fruiting shoots that grow from the crown (and from roots in erect types). They can be identified by their five leaflets and lighter green color. Floricanes are second-year canes — those same primocanes from last season, now producing flowers and fruit on their lateral branches. Floricanes have three leaflets. After fruiting, floricanes die and must be removed. The crown and roots live on, sending up new primocanes each year. This two-year cycle repeats for the life of the planting — typically 15–20 years (OSU Extension EC-1303; University of Maryland Extension).

Primocane-fruiting varieties break this pattern: they produce fruit on the tips of first-year canes in late summer and fall, in addition to (or instead of) a floricane crop. They can be managed as a single fall crop by cutting all canes to the ground each winter, simplifying management considerably.

The three growth habits

Within either cane type, blackberries fall into three growth habits that determine trellis needs, spacing, cold hardiness, and flavor profile:

Trailing

Primocanes produced only from the crown; may reach 15+ ft and trail on the ground unless trellised. Best flavor and aroma; small seeds. Earliest fruiting season. Least cold-hardy — Zone 6–9 for most varieties. Require a trellis. PNW specialty: Marion, Obsidian, Black Diamond, Boysen, Logan.

Erect

Stiff, upright canes to 12 ft if unpruned; suckers from roots as well as crown. Firmer fruit, larger seeds, milder flavor than trailing. More cold-hardy — Zone 4–9. Can be grown without a trellis but benefit from support. Navaho, Ouachita, Arapaho are well-known varieties.

Semierect

Thick, arching canes to 20 ft — the most vigorous type. Excellent yields; fruit quality between trailing and erect. Canes produced from crown only (less invasive than erect). Require a sturdy trellis. Cold-hardy Zone 5–9. Triple Crown is the classic example.

Pacific Northwest tip

Trailing blackberries are the PNW specialty — Marion (marionberry), Obsidian, Black Diamond, Columbia Star, Boysen, and Logan all thrive west of the Cascades. OSU Extension's Bernadine Strik notes that the PNW climate produces trailing blackberries with peak flavor and quality unmatched elsewhere. Trailing types are less cold-hardy than erect types, but western WA and OR winters are mild enough for most trailing varieties without protection. In colder, higher-elevation or east-of-the-Cascades locations, erect varieties or winter cane protection are the safer approach.

Pollination

Nearly all blackberry varieties are self-fertile — a single plant can produce a full crop without a second variety nearby. Bees carry pollen within the same flower and between flowers on the same plant. You do not need to plant two varieties for fruit set, though planting varieties with different ripening times can extend your fresh harvest window.

Avoid applying any insecticides during the bloom window — blackberry flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, and pesticide applications during bloom will reduce fruit set even on self-fertile varieties. To extend your fresh harvest season, consider planting varieties with staggered ripening times rather than multiple plants of the same variety.

Site selection and trellis

Sun and soil

Blackberries require a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight measured in early summer (late June through early August) for best production. Adequate sun triggers flower bud initiation for the following season and drives the carbohydrate production that develops flavor and fruit size. Blackberries will tolerate partial shade, but yields and flavor are meaningfully reduced in shadier sites.

Blackberries tolerate a wide range of soils, but well-drained, moderately rich soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0 produces the best results (OSU Extension EC-1303). Avoid low-lying areas where water pools after rain — waterlogged roots invite root rot. If your soil is heavy or poorly drained, plant on a raised mound or raised bed. Improve the planting area by working 1–2 inches of plant-based organic matter into an area 1.5–2 times the diameter of the planting hole, to a depth of about one foot. Apply a 2–4 inch mulch layer after planting.

Trellis — build it before you plant

Trailing and semierect blackberries cannot support themselves and require a trellis — install it before or at planting time, not after. Erect varieties are technically self-supporting but benefit significantly from a trellis: it prevents cane breakage in wind, keeps the planting neater, and makes harvest substantially easier.

The standard approach for trailing types is a two-wire trellis with wires at approximately 3 and 5 feet. Erect types work well on a T-trellis. Semierect types — the most vigorous — benefit from a double-T trellis with four wires for adequate support of their heavy cane load (OSU Extension EC-1303). Posts should be set firmly in the ground; end posts braced with diagonal supports. Use sturdy wire — these plantings last 15–20 years and the trellis must outlast them.

Erect blackberries sucker from their roots and will spread to form a hedgerow. Maintain hedgerow width at approximately 12 inches by pruning or hoeing any primocanes emerging outside that zone. This makes weeding, pruning, and harvest manageable and keeps disease pressure lower (OSU Extension EC-1303).

Pruning and training

Annual pruning is essential for blackberries — not optional. Without consistent management, canes become a tangled, unproductive mass and disease pressure increases sharply. The goal differs by type, but all blackberry pruning follows the same underlying logic: remove dead floricanes, tip or train primocanes to encourage branching, and maintain a clean, open structure that admits light and airflow.

Summer tipping — erect and semierect types

During the growing season, tip primocanes of erect blackberries when they reach 3–3.5 feet tall, removing the top 3–4 inches just above a leaf node (OSU Extension EC-1303; OSU coastal guide EM-9180). For semierect types, tip when canes are just over 4–5 feet tall, removing the top 2–6 inches (OSU Extension EM-9180). This stimulates lateral branching and increases the number of fruit-bearing nodes dramatically — OSU Extension notes that tipping can increase yield fourfold to fivefold on erect types. You will need to go over the planting multiple times in early summer as canes reach tipping height at different rates.

For trailing types, primocanes are not tipped — they are trained along the trellis wires and tied in place. In the PNW, tuck primocanes along the trellis in November when dormant. In colder or windier sites, leave canes on the ground and train them to the trellis in late February just before bud break, providing winter protection from cold and wind damage.

Winter pruning — floricane types

During dormancy, remove all dead floricanes at their base. On erect and semierect types, shorten lateral branches on the remaining primocanes: erect types to 1.5–2.5 feet; semierect types to 2.5–4 feet (OSU Extension EC-1303). For trailing types, the floricane canes that fruited the previous summer are removed in winter, and the primocanes that spent the summer training along the trellis are now the floricanes that will fruit this coming season — leave their lateral branches intact, as these carry the fruit.

Thin primocane stems to 3–6 per plant for erect and semierect types to prevent overcrowding, improve light penetration, and reduce disease pressure.

Primocane-only management (primocane varieties)

If growing primocane-fruiting varieties for a single fall crop only, cut all canes to just above ground level in late winter. In late spring or early summer, tip the emerging primocanes when they reach 3.5 feet tall, removing the top 6–12 inches. The laterals that develop from these tipped canes will flower and fruit starting in late summer. This is the simplest management system for primocane varieties and avoids the complexity of managing two separate cane ages simultaneously (OSU Extension EC-1303).

Pacific Northwest tip

For trailing types in the Willamette Valley and southwestern Oregon, prune and train canes any time from December through February (OSU Extension EC-1303). In colder production regions — central, eastern, and southeastern Oregon — prune as late as possible in winter, ideally early March, to remove any cold-damaged tissue and reduce winter injury risk. OSU Extension's free publication Growing Blackberries in Your Home Garden (EC-1303) by Bernadine Strik is the definitive reference for PNW home growers — highly recommended.

Watering and feeding

Target approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone during the growing season — roughly ¾–1 gallon per square foot, or 7–10 gallons weekly for a typical 3-foot planting area. Apply water deeply once or twice per week rather than lightly each day; the goal is consistent moisture at root depth, not a wet surface. Soil should be moist to about 12 inches — the top 1–2 inches can feel dry while the root zone is well-watered.

In the PNW, spring rainfall typically provides adequate moisture through June. Supplemental irrigation becomes critical in July and August — exactly when fruit is sizing and developing flavor. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses deliver water directly to the root zone while keeping foliage dry, which reduces fungal disease pressure. Do not over-water: soggy soil invites root rot.

For containers, water until the soil is saturated and water exits the drainage holes. Then allow the top 1–2 inches to dry before watering again. A wilted plant may be receiving too much or too little water — check soil moisture at root depth before responding.

Apply an all-purpose balanced fertilizer or 2–3 inches of well-rotted compost over the root zone in early spring. Avoid applying fertilizer after early summer — late nitrogen encourages soft new growth that is vulnerable to winter damage and more susceptible to disease. A maintained 2–4 inch mulch layer (straw, leaves, or wood chips) conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and builds soil health over time. Keep mulch pulled back from the crown. If your canes are producing a foot or more of vigorous growth per season with healthy foliage, additional fertilizer is probably not needed.

Harvest

Blackberries ripen from mid-June through early fall depending on type, variety, and location. Trailing types fruit earliest (late June through early August in the Willamette Valley); erect and semierect types follow in mid-summer; primocane varieties extend harvest through September and beyond.

A blackberry is at peak flavor and sugar when it loses its glossy shine and turns slightly dull — this is the definitive ripeness indicator (Clemson Extension). A berry that still gleams is not fully ripe even if it is fully black. Once dull and yielding to gentle pressure, flavor and sweetness are at their peak. At this stage, the berry detaches from the plant with almost no resistance.

Harvest every 4–7 days during the fruiting window depending on cultivar and weather — ripe berries left on the cane overripen quickly, become soft, and attract spotted wing drosophila. If possible, harvest in the morning after dew has dried and while temperatures are still cool; heat reduces storage life significantly. Refrigerate harvested fruit promptly. Blackberries freeze exceptionally well for long-term storage.

ℹ Ripeness indicator: dull, not glossy

A common harvesting mistake is picking blackberries when they turn black but are still glossy. At this stage, the fruit is astringent and noticeably tart. Wait until the glossy sheen fades to a dull, matte finish — this transition indicates full ripeness and maximum sugar content. The berry should also detach from the receptacle with almost no resistance. If you have to tug, it's not ready.

Growing in containers

Blackberries can be grown in containers with a minimum final container size of 20 gallons. Trailing types require a trellis or support structure in the container; upright types may be supported with a single central stake. Increase container size gradually over several years rather than starting in a very large pot. Use a quality potting mix with added compost — do not use garden soil in containers.

Container blackberries require more frequent watering than in-ground plantings. Water until saturated and drainage occurs; then allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. For growers in Zone 6 and colder, container roots lack the insulation of surrounding soil — move pots to an unheated but frost-protected structure in winter to prevent root freeze.

For smaller spaces, the Baby Cake™ variety grows to just 3 feet tall and can be maintained in a smaller container than standard varieties — worth considering if space or weight is a limiting factor.

Common problems

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) High — monitor at harvest

Drosophila suzukii— a vinegar fly with a serrated ovipositor that lays eggs inside ripening fruit 7–10 days before external symptoms appear. Larvae develop inside causing softening, leaking, and rapid decay. Blackberries' thin skin makes them highly susceptible; late-season fruit is most at risk when SWD populations are highest.

  • Monitor with SWD traps from mid-summer through harvest
  • Harvest frequently — do not leave ripe or overripe fruit on the cane; remove any split or overripe fruit promptly (sanitation is critical)
  • Refrigerate harvested fruit immediately
  • Spinosad-based products (Monterey Garden Insect Spray; Entrust for organic growers) are effective when adults are detected — apply per label directions
  • Contact your local cooperative extension office for the most current SWD management recommendations in your area
Deer High — serious threat

Deer browse blackberry canes and foliage readily and will pull young plants entirely from the ground. Thornless varieties are particularly attractive — the absence of thorns removes the natural deterrent that wild brambles rely on.

  • An 8-foot woven wire fence is the most reliable protection — deer clear standard 6-foot fences
  • Individual cages of hardware cloth protect young plantings through establishment
  • Repellents may provide short-term deterrence but require consistent reapplication and are not reliable season-long
  • At Raintree, an 8-foot woven wire deer fence has proven most effective
Botrytis (Gray Mold) High — wet conditions

Ripening fruit covered with fuzzy gray mold. Common in wet or humid conditions with poor airflow, shaded plantings, or fruit resting on the soil surface. Overcrowded plantings with a dense canopy are most at risk.

  • Maximize sunlight and airflow through the planting — proper trellis training and annual pruning are the primary defenses
  • Remove diseased fruit promptly; do not leave it in the planting
  • Avoid wetting ripening fruit during irrigation — drip irrigation at soil level is preferable to overhead watering
  • Do not overwater; keep the canopy as open and dry as possible
Cane Borers Moderate

New shoots wilt and die in spring; cutting the stem open reveals a white grub tunneling inside. Most noticeable in late spring on newly emerging primocanes.

  • Prune out and destroy affected shoots immediately — do not leave them in the planting
  • On primocane-fruiting varieties managed with the single-crop method (all canes cut to ground each winter), this pest is largely prevented automatically
  • Dispose of pruned cane material away from the planting area
Root Rot High — poorly drained sites

Roots are rotted with few fibrous roots remaining. Fruit stems shortened; berries small and withered. After hot dry periods, older leaves may wither, scorch, or bronze. Disease organisms can persist in soil for 7+ years — prevention is far easier than treatment.

  • Plant in well-drained soil; raise planting mounds in heavy or poorly drained sites
  • Never allow soil to become waterlogged; avoid low spots
  • Plant resistant varieties where root rot is known to be a problem in your area
  • Do not replant blackberries in a site where root rot has occurred — the pathogen persists long-term
Viral Disease High — no cure

Leaves may show yellow veins or irregular discoloration. Fruit crumbly, small, or declining yields over time with no obvious environmental cause. No treatment exists — the only remedy is removal and starting over.

  • Choose virus-resistant varieties where available
  • If virus is confirmed, remove all affected plants and do not replant in the same location without a multi-year break
  • Control aphids, which are the primary vectors for blackberry viruses
Aphids Moderate — virus vector risk

Pear-shaped insects on stem and leaf undersides, causing red blisters, downward leaf curl, and sooty mold from honeydew deposits. More significant as a virus vector than for direct feeding damage.

  • Encourage natural predators — ladybugs, parasitic wasps; plant dill or yarrow nearby as habitat
  • Dislodge with strong water spray
  • Pyrethrin, rotenone, or insecticidal soap for heavier infestations
  • Control ants, which protect aphid colonies from natural predators
  • Monitor in late spring and summer; control is most important on young, establishing plantings
Mites Low–Moderate — hot dry conditions

Leaves stippled and bronzed; very small crawling insects visible on leaf undersides; webbing on undersides of leaves or around new shoot tips. Mites thrive in hot, dry weather and when broad-spectrum pesticides have eliminated natural predators.

  • Maintain adequate irrigation — water-stressed plants are far more susceptible
  • Minimize broad-spectrum pesticide use to preserve natural predator populations
  • Insecticidal soap with ultra-light oil is effective for active infestations
  • Release predatory mites (Phytoseiidae) for persistent infestations; note that mites can develop resistance to pyrethrin/rotenone sprays
Voles, Mice & Rabbits Low–Moderate — winter risk

Bark eaten in a band from soil level up to 8 inches; roots may be eaten too, usually under snow cover or in areas with heavy mulch or tall grass at the base of canes.

  • Keep mulch 4–6 inches away from cane bases at all times — mulch against the crown invites rodent activity in winter
  • Keep grass short within 1–2 feet of the planting
  • Vinyl tree guards protect young canes until the planting is established
Rust Low–Moderate

Lesions on the upper leaf surface followed by orange spore-producing structures on the undersides; may also appear on fruit or stems. Rust diseases require an alternate host plant to complete their life cycle.

  • Remove and destroy infected plant parts
  • Copper fungicide applied after harvest before fall rains and again in early spring can prevent some rust infections
  • Identify and if possible remove alternate host plants within 900 feet
  • Cedar-apple rust is a concern east of the Rockies — check with your local extension office for alternate hosts common in your area
  • Select resistant varieties where available
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Low — monitor

Puncture-type feeding damage on fruit followed by decay; deformity and brown spots in surrounding tissue; brown spots in stored fruit.

  • Monitor with traps; check stopbmsb.org for current management recommendations
  • Harvest promptly as fruit ripens; remove overripe or fallen fruit
  • Overwinters in groups in dry sheltered areas — vacuum rather than crushing if found in or near the home

Pacific Northwest

In colder eastern WA/OR locations, delay final dormant pruning to early March to allow full assessment of winter cane damage before cutting. Remove cold-damaged tissue at this time. Trailing types on the coast can be trained to the trellis starting in late February.

  • Continue deep irrigation through harvest — critical for fruit size and flavor
  • Remove any overripe or split fruit from the planting promptly (SWD and botrytis sanitation)
Fall Sep - Oct
  • Primocane varieties: Harvest fall crop from lateral tips of tipped primocanes; harvest before killing frost
  • Complete removal of dead floricanes if not done after summer harvest
  • Begin tucking trailing type primocanes along trellis as plants go dormant (November)
  • Continue irrigation until canes are fully dormant if fall is dry
Late Fall Nov – Dec
