Cherries

Beautiful, ornamental, and intensely flavorful — but cherries reward careful planning more than almost any other fruit tree. Pollination, rain, birds, and pruning timing all matter. Get those right and cherries are among the most satisfying trees in the home orchard.

Why grow cherries?

Cherries are among the most prized of the stone fruits, and home growers have two species to choose from: sweet cherries (Prunus avium), native to Europe and western Asia, and pie cherries (Prunus cerasus, also called sour or tart cherries), believed to have arisen as a natural hybrid in the same range. Both belong to the rose family (Rosaceae) and have been cultivated for thousands of years. What makes the home-grown cherry worth the effort is fragility: cherries do not ship or store well, so commercial fruit is picked firm and chilled hard. A tree-ripe cherry eaten warm off the branch — when sugars and aromatics peak — bears almost no resemblance to a supermarket cherry.

The two species behave differently in the orchard. Sweet cherries grow into large trees (15–30 feet on standard rootstock, less on Gisela or other dwarfing stock) and most cultivars are self-unfruitful — they require a compatible second variety blooming at the same time to set a crop. Pie cherries stay smaller (typically 15–20 feet), are reliably self-fruitful, more cold-hardy, more disease-tolerant, and easier to grow in humid climates where sweet cherries struggle. If you want a cherry tree that "just works" with minimum fuss, a pie cherry is almost always the right answer.

Two things matter most before planting. First, sweet cherries need well-drained soil — they are particularly intolerant of wet feet, and root rot will kill a tree that's otherwise thriving. Second, ripe cherries crack badly in rain; in regions where summer storms coincide with ripening, bird netting, rain covers, or a self-fertile, crack-resistant variety can make the difference between a harvest and a wasted crop. The variety and site sections below address both.

Sweet cherries vs. pie cherries — choose your type first

Sweet and pie cherries are genuinely different fruits in terms of flavor, pollination, pruning, climate tolerance, and how you'll use the harvest. The distinction is especially important for gardeners in the maritime Pacific Northwest, where the two types perform very differently.

  • Typically modified central leader training
  • The simplest, most reliable choice for west-of-the-Cascades gardens

Best for: baking, preserves, wet climates, beginners

Duke cherries (such as Almaden Duke and Danube) sit between the two types — sweeter than pie cherries but hardier and more self-sufficient than most sweet cherries. They're worth considering for growers who want something between the two categories.

Pacific Northwest tip

West of the Cascades, pie cherries are the dependable default. They sidestep the two biggest maritime cherry problems — rain cracking and bacterial canker susceptibility — almost entirely. For west-side growers who want sweet cherries, the priority list is: self-fertile, crack-resistant, canker-tolerant, on a dwarfing Gisela rootstock. Varieties that check all those boxes are a short list (Lapins, Vandalay, Sweetheart are the strongest candidates), but they can perform very well on the right site. East of the Cascades, the full range of sweet cherries is available and crack resistance becomes less critical.

Rootstock and tree size

Modern dwarfing rootstocks have genuinely transformed cherry growing for home gardeners. The Gisela series in particular has made sweet cherry trees manageable enough to net against birds, prune correctly, and harvest from the ground or a small stepladder — none of which is practical with a standard 25-foot sweet cherry tree. For home orchards, dwarfing rootstocks are almost always the better choice.

In the wet PNW, Gisela 5 is strongly preferred over standard rootstocks for sweet cherries. Smaller trees are easier to cover with netting (essential against birds and rain), easier to keep pruned for airflow (critical for canker and brown rot management), and easier to harvest ahead of incoming rain. The investment in a well-managed Gisela 5 tree pays back quickly in both fruit quality and reduced disease pressure compared to an unmanageable standard tree.

Pollination

Pollination is the most important planning decision for sweet cherries. Cherry bloom is brief — typically just 7–10 days — which means compatible varieties must overlap precisely. Bees are the primary pollinators, and cold or wet bloom weather can suppress bee activity dramatically even when two perfectly compatible trees are growing side by side.

The core rules are straightforward: pie cherries are self-fertile and need no partner. Most sweet cherries need pollen from a compatible sweet cherry variety — and "compatible" is not interchangeable with "any other sweet cherry." Several historically popular varieties share incompatibility groups that prevent them from pollinating each other.

Bing, Lambert, and Napoleon (Royal Ann) are in the same incompatibility group and cannot reliably pollinate one another. This is one of the most common cherry planting mistakes. Always verify compatibility before purchasing — self-fertile varieties ( Lapins, Stella, Sweetheart, Vandalay ) avoid this problem entirely and are the simplest home-orchard solution.

⚠ Sweet × pie cherries do not cross-pollinate

Sweet cherries (Prunus avium) and pie cherries (Prunus cerasus) are different species and cannot reliably pollinate each other. Bloom timing rarely overlaps cleanly — pie cherries typically bloom later than most sweet cherries — and even when bloom does overlap, the interspecies pollen is generally incompatible. Sweet × tart hybrids (Duke types) like Almaden Duke, Danube, and Carmine Jewel are also unreliable as pollinizers for sweet cherries: they straddle both species genetically, but their bloom timing and cross-compatibility with sweet cherries is inconsistent in practice. Plan a sweet cherry pollination partner from within the sweet cherry group, and treat pie cherries and Duke types as independent plantings with their own pollination needs.

Cherry bloom in western WA and OR frequently coincides with cool, rainy conditions that suppress bee activity. Even with perfectly compatible varieties and good bloom overlap, a cold wet bloom week can sharply reduce fruit set regardless of planning. This is one of the strongest arguments for self-fertile sweet cherry varieties in the PNW — they reduce dependence on bee-mediated cross-pollination, since self-pollination can still occur within a single flower even with limited bee activity.

Do not rely on pie cherries as pollinizers for sweet cherries in the PNW. Even where bloom overlap exists on paper, the timing difference between pie and sweet cherry bloom is often enough to miss the window in practice.

Choosing varieties

Low-chill sweet cherries (Zone 9+)

A small but important group for growers in warm-winter climates that don't accumulate the 800+ chill hours most sweet cherries need. These varieties only require 200–500 chill hours.

Pacific Northwest tip

West of the Cascades, prioritize crack- and canker-resistant varieties: Lapins, Vandalay, Sweetheart, Hartland, and Hudson are proven sweet cherry performers. For pie cherries, Montmorency, Surefire, and English Morello are PNW workhorses. Bing and Rainier are best left to east-of-Cascades or California growers — they crack badly in wet Junes.

Site selection and soil

Cherries require full sun — a minimum of 8 hours per day — and are among the most drainage-sensitive of common fruit trees. Sweet cherries especially struggle in heavy, wet soils where oxygen is limited and bacterial canker has the conditions it needs to spread. An open, slightly elevated site with good air movement is almost always better than a sheltered low spot.

Soil pH of 6.0–7.0 is ideal. Plant with the graft union above the soil line, keep mulch several inches back from the trunk, and focus on improving the broader planting area rather than just the planting hole — roots need to move into well-aerated soil quickly, especially on Gisela rootstocks that develop a more limited root system than standard trees.

Chill hours and hardiness

Most sweet cherries require 700–800+ chill hours (temperatures between 32–45°F) and are hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. Pie cherries are typically harder, succeeding in Zones 4–9 with similar chill requirements. Low-chill options (Royal Lee/Minnie Royal for sweet cherries, certain duke types) are available for Zone 9+ gardens in California and the mild Pacific Coast.

Pacific Northwest tip

Chill hours are not a limiting factor for cherries across most of the PNW. The primary site concerns are drainage (sweet cherries in particular are unforgiving of wet clay), airflow (essential for bacterial canker prevention), and avoiding frost pockets that can damage early bloom. A raised planting area or gently sloped site where cold air drains away is meaningfully better for sweet cherries than a flat, low, poorly drained location.

Watering and feeding

Young cherry trees need consistent moisture while establishing — approximately 1 inch per week during active growth, adjusted for rainfall and soil type. Water deeply and infrequently rather than shallowly and often. Established sweet cherries on Gisela rootstocks need attentive summer irrigation in dry periods since their more limited root systems don't access soil moisture reserves as broadly as standard trees.

Fertilize conservatively. A light balanced fertilizer in early spring is usually adequate. Late-season nitrogen encourages the soft, succulent growth most vulnerable to bacterial canker infection and winter injury. A healthy cherry making approximately 12 inches of new shoot growth per year is probably not in need of additional fertilizer. Container trees need more frequent watering and feeding than in-ground plantings.

Pacific Northwest tip

In western WA and OR, established cherry trees often need little supplemental irrigation through June. Summer irrigation becomes important for Gisela-rooted trees during July and August. Avoid late summer irrigation that pushes new growth after August — late soft growth is susceptible to early fall bacterial canker infections as the wet season returns.

Pruning and training

Sweet cherries are trained to an open center system — 3 to 5 scaffold branches arranged without a dominant central trunk, maximizing light penetration and airflow throughout the canopy. Pie cherries respond well to a modified central leader with wide branch angles and balanced scaffolds. For both types, the goal is a canopy that light reaches fully and air moves through freely — both essential for disease management.

Encourage wide crotch angles (ideally 45–60°) on young scaffold branches. Narrow, upright angles create bark inclusion, weak attachment, and storm damage risk. On dwarfing Gisela rootstocks, annual pruning keeps the tree small enough to net, spray, and harvest from a short ladder — size control is a disease management strategy as much as a convenience.

⚠ Pruning timing — especially critical for sweet cherries

Sweet cherries are significantly more susceptible to bacterial canker (Pseudomonas syringae) entering through pruning wounds than most other fruit trees. In the maritime PNW, the safest window for major structural pruning of sweet cherries is late summer — typically August — when the tree is healthy and actively growing, the wounds seal quickly, and bacterial infection pressure is at its seasonal low. Dormant-season and early spring pruning during wet, cool conditions is when infection risk peaks. Minor corrective work in summer is far safer than heavy dormant pruning in January. This recommendation is consistent with WSU and OSU extension guidance for stone fruits in wet climates.

Pacific Northwest tip

The summer pruning window (mid-July through August, after harvest) is the most important structural maintenance window for sweet cherry growers west of the Cascades. Prune out any water sprouts, crowding interior branches, and downward-growing wood. Keep tools disinfected between trees — bacterial canker spreads on pruning equipment. Pie cherries are considerably more forgiving of winter pruning but still benefit from the drier late-summer window for any significant cuts.

Harvest

Cherries do not ripen after picking — they must be harvested fully ripe. Sweet cherries should be fully colored, firm, and rich in flavor; pie cherries should have full color, developed acidity, and good sugar. Taste is the most reliable guide; color alone can be misleading, especially for yellow-red sweet varieties like Rainier.

Harvest with stems attached for the best storage life — stem-pulled cherries deteriorate faster. Cool harvested fruit as quickly as possible. For west-side PNW growers, monitor forecasts during the ripening window and be prepared to harvest ahead of incoming rain — cracking can begin within hours of a rain event on susceptible varieties.

Pacific Northwest tip

Rain cracking begins when water — either from direct rain or absorption through soil — reaches fruit that is already at or near maturity. Even brief rain events of 15–20 minutes can trigger cracking on susceptible varieties like Rainier and Bing when fruit is ripe. Having bird netting already in place (which also provides modest rain protection) and harvesting at the first sign of rain-readiness is the practical west-side approach. Crack-resistant varieties like Lapins, Vandalay, Sweetheart, Surefire, and Hartland tolerate wet harvest weather far better.

Common problems

Bacterial Canker High — Sweet Cherries, PNW

Caused by Pseudomonas syringae, bacterial canker is the most serious disease of sweet cherries in western Washington and Oregon. It enters primarily through pruning wounds, frost cracks, and natural openings during cool, wet weather. Symptoms include gumming at the trunk or branches, sunken amber-colored cankers in the bark, dead buds that fail to open in spring, and dieback of shoots and entire scaffold branches. Severe infections can kill young trees entirely.

  • Prune sweet cherries in late summer (August) rather than dormant season — the single most effective cultural preventive measure
  • Disinfect tools between every cut and between trees
  • Avoid stressing trees with poor drainage, over-cropping, or drought
  • Apply copper-based fungicide at leaf fall and again at bud swell to protect against primary infection
  • Choose more tolerant varieties where possible — Vandalay, Sweetheart, and Lapins have better canker records in PNW trials than Bing or standard older varieties
Pacific Northwest tip

Bacterial canker is the primary reason sweet cherries fail on west-side PNW sites. Trees in poorly drained soil, pruned at the wrong time, or stressed by early heavy crops are dramatically more susceptible. Gisela rootstocks that are overloaded in their first few bearing years are particularly vulnerable. The combination of good drainage, summer pruning, copper timing, and variety choice removes most of the risk.

Rain Cracking High — Sweet Cherries, Wet Climates

Rain cracking occurs when ripening sweet cherry fruit absorbs water through the skin — either directly from rainfall or indirectly through rapid soil moisture uptake by the roots — causing the flesh to expand faster than the skin. Cracks typically start at the stem end or blossom end and progress rapidly. Cracked fruit is unmarketable, deteriorates within hours, and invites brown rot infection.

  • Choose crack-resistant varieties for wet-climate sites — Lapins, Vandalay, Sweetheart, Hartland, Hudson, and Surefire all have better cracking resistance than Bing, Rainier, or Chelan
  • Harvest promptly when fruit reaches maturity — do not allow fruit to hang once ripe in anticipation of better weather
  • Bird netting provides modest but real rain interception and is standard practice on dwarf trees
  • Plastic rain covers over individual trees or rows are used in commercial production — feasible on Gisela-dwarfed home orchard trees
Brown Rot High — Wet Conditions at Harvest

Caused by Monilinia species, brown rot can infect cherry blossoms (causing blossom blight), young shoots, and ripening fruit. Infected fruit shows a rapidly spreading brown rot followed by gray spore masses. Cracked fruit is especially vulnerable — brown rot spores enter cracks within hours. Mummified fruit left on the tree or ground carries the fungus through winter.

  • Remove all mummified fruit from the tree and ground — this is the most effective single cultural control
  • Improve canopy airflow annually through pruning to speed drying after rain
  • Harvest promptly and completely — do not leave overripe fruit on the tree
  • Fungicide applications timed at bloom and pre-harvest can protect against the heaviest pressure years
Birds High — Universal

Birds — robins, starlings, cedar waxwings, and others — can strip a cherry tree nearly overnight once fruit begins to color. Unlike most other fruit, cherries attract birds in large flocks that can remove an entire crop in a single morning. This is not a minor nuisance; it is one of the most common reasons home growers lose their entire crop.

  • Install bird netting before fruit begins to color — waiting until the first cherries turn red is usually too late
  • Use lightweight netting supported on a frame or hoops so birds can't reach fruit through the mesh; make sure edges are secured to the ground
  • Dwarf trees on Gisela rootstocks can be completely enclosed in netting — one of the strongest practical arguments for dwarfing rootstocks in home orchards
  • Scare tape, predator decoys, and noise devices provide only short-term deterrence and are not reliable as primary controls
  • Yellow-fruited varieties (Rainier, Gold) may be marginally less attractive to birds but still require netting
Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) High — PNW, All Cherries

Drosophila suzukiilays eggs inside intact, ripening cherries using a serrated ovipositor — unlike common fruit flies, which attack only damaged fruit. Larvae are small white maggots found inside otherwise normal-looking cherries. SWD is a major cherry pest across the PNW and has become the primary insect pest of cherries in many west-side orchards since its arrival around 2009.

  • Harvest frequently and promptly — ripe and overripe fruit on the tree is the primary egg-laying site
  • Monitor with SWD traps (apple cider vinegar + red wine bait) beginning in late June to track population peaks
  • Fine-mesh exclusion netting (under 1mm openings) over dwarf trees provides excellent protection and also addresses birds simultaneously
  • Remove and destroy all dropped or overripe fruit immediately — do not leave it in or near the orchard
Pacific Northwest tip

SWD is one of the most economically damaging cherry pests in the PNW and largely absent from older growing guides. Pressure typically peaks July–August. In cool, wet years when harvest is delayed, SWD pressure is often higher because ripe fruit hangs longer. Fine-mesh netting over dwarf trees is the most practical and effective non-chemical control for home growers — and it addresses birds at the same time.

Cherry Slug (Pear Sawfly) Moderate — Cosmetic

Cherry slug (Caliroa cerasi) is the larva of a small sawfly — not a true slug. The olive-green, slimy larvae skeletonize the upper surface of leaves, leaving a papery, brown appearance. Light infestations are mainly cosmetic; heavy repeated infestations over multiple seasons can reduce tree vigor and the following year's fruit bud set.

  • Scout foliage from late June onward for the characteristic slimy, olive-green larvae
  • Knock larvae off with a strong jet of water — they dry out rapidly off the leaf surface
  • Heavy infestations can be treated with insecticidal soap or spinosad; avoid spraying during bloom
  • Usually self-limiting; natural predators and parasitoids help manage populations over time

Common mistakes to avoid

Planting a single non-self-fertile sweet cherry with no compatible pollinizer — the tree will bloom beautifully every year and produce almost no fruit

Pairing Bing, Lambert, and Napoleon together — they are in the same incompatibility group and cannot reliably pollinate one another

Planting crack-prone varieties (Bing, Rainier) in a wet west-side site without a rain management strategy
✗
Pruning sweet cherries heavily in winter or wet spring conditions in the PNW — the highest-risk window for bacterial canker entry through wounds
✗
Installing bird netting after fruit begins to color — birds key on color and can strip a tree in a single morning once it turns
✗
Overloading a young Gisela 3 tree with heavy crops in its first 2–3 bearing years — this stresses the tree and dramatically increases canker susceptibility
✗
Heavy nitrogen fertilization that pushes late-season soft growth — the most canker-susceptible tissue a cherry can produce

Seasonal care calendar

Winter Dec - Feb
  • Remove mummified fruit and fallen debris — critical for reducing overwintering brown rot and bacterial canker inoculum
  • Inspect tree structure; plan any structural corrections needed
  • Apply copper spray during dormancy to reduce bacterial canker and fungal overwintering
  • Avoid heavy structural pruning of sweet cherries during wet winter conditions — save significant cuts for the summer window
  • Inspect and repair bird netting systems; order replacement netting if needed
Pacific Northwest

Winter is the highest-risk period for bacterial canker infection through pruning wounds on sweet cherries. Confine winter work to removing clearly dead wood and applying copper. Leave structural pruning for the August dry window whenever possible.

Early Spring Mar - Apr
  • Confirm bloom overlap between your variety pairs before flowers open
  • Apply copper spray at bud swell (before bloom opens) for additional bacterial canker and brown rot protection
  • Avoid any insecticide or fungicide spray during open bloom — pollinators are essential and the bloom window is short
  • Watch for blossom blight (brown rot on flowers) during wet bloom periods
  • Ensure adequate soil moisture if spring is unusually dry
Late Spring May - Jun
  • Monitor fruit set and early shoot growth — assess whether trees are on track for a good crop
  • Scout for cherry slug (pear sawfly larvae) on foliage beginning late May
  • Begin SWD monitoring with traps in late May/early June
  • Install bird netting before fruit begins to color — this is the most important pre-harvest task
  • Water young trees consistently; begin irrigation for Gisela-rooted trees during dry spells
Summer — Harvest & Pruning Jul - Aug
  • Harvest promptly as fruit ripens — check daily during peak ripening
  • Monitor weather forecasts; harvest ahead of rain on susceptible sweet cherry varieties
  • Remove cracked or infected fruit immediately; do not leave it in the tree or on the ground
  • Sweet cherry structural pruning: August — this is the safest window for significant cuts in the PNW; bacterial canker infection risk is at its seasonal low
  • Remove water sprouts, crowding branches, and downward-growing wood; disinfect tools between trees
  • Continue SWD monitoring through August; use exclusion netting or other controls if pressure is high
Fall Sep - Nev
  • Remove all fallen fruit and leaf debris — essential for reducing overwintering brown rot, canker, and SWD populations
  • Apply copper spray at leaf fall to reduce bacterial canker overwintering infection
  • Water young trees deeply if autumn is dry before the ground freezes
  • Refresh mulch around the base; keep mulch several inches away from the trunk to reduce vole habitat
  • Evaluate the season's performance — assess cracking, canker, bird pressure, and SWD severity to plan adjustments

Pruning timing reminder

⚠ Sweet cherries (PNW): Major structural pruning belongs in August — not winter. Bacterial canker risk is at its lowest in dry summer conditions.

Pie cherries are more tolerant of winter pruning but also benefit from summer timing.
