Currants

Red, black, white, and pink — cold-hardy, productive, and elegant in the landscape. One of the easiest fruiting shrubs you can grow, once you understand the pruning system and the regulatory landscape.

Currants (Ribes spp.) are subject to state-level shipping restrictions and permit requirements in many eastern US states. These regulations exist to protect five-needle white pine forests from white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), a fungal disease that requires both currants and pines to complete its life cycle. Restrictions vary significantly by state and in some cases by county — and they differ by currant type, with black currants (Ribes nigrum) most heavily regulated.

States with outright bans or significant restrictions include: Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia — though rules vary considerably. Some states ban only black currants; others require permits for all Ribes; others restrict certain counties only. Raintree complies with all state agricultural regulations and will not ship plants to prohibited destinations.

Why grow currants?

Currants (Ribes species) are among the most cold-hardy, productive, and manageable fruiting shrubs available to home gardeners. Hardy to USDA Zone 3 — where most fruit trees would not survive — they thrive in cool, moist climates and produce generous crops on compact bushes that fit into almost any garden. They are largely pest- and disease-resistant compared to tree fruits, require no spray program in most home gardens, and produce fruit in clusters that make harvest fast and satisfying.

A well-maintained currant bush can remain productive for 20 years or more (Utah State University Extension). They are one of the few fruiting plants that genuinely tolerate partial shade — useful in gardens where full sun is limited — though full sun produces the largest and most flavorful crops.

The flavor range across the currant family is remarkable: from the tart brightness of red currants to the complex, musky depth of black currants; from the mild, honeyed sweetness of white and pink currants to the fresh acidity prized in jams, jellies, and cassis liqueur. There is a currant for every preference and every use.

Red Currants

Sweet-tart, jewel-bright clusters. Excellent fresh, in jams, jellies, and butters. High pectin makes for clean-setting preserves. Most productive type for fresh eating. Self-fertile.

Black Currants

Bold, complex, musky flavor unlike any other fruit. Used for jams, jellies, liqueurs (cassis), and drying. Exceptionally high in vitamin C and anthocyanins. Some varieties require cross-pollination. Most heavily regulated in eastern states.

White Currants

Milder, sweeter, and less acidic than red. Delicate enough for fresh eating; beautiful in desserts. A color variation of red currant (Ribes sativum), not a separate species. Self-fertile.

Pink Currants

The elegant middle ground — sweeter than red, more character than white. Pink Champagne is the classic variety, with translucent rose-pink clusters of outstanding ornamental and culinary appeal. Self-fertile.

State restrictions — read before you order

The history of currant regulation in the United States is rooted in the early 20th century, when white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) — a fungal disease introduced from Europe around 1900 — began devastating five-needle white pine forests. The rust requires two completely different host plants to complete its life cycle: white pines and Ribes (currants and gooseberries). Without a Ribes host, the disease cycle breaks. The federal government banned all Ribes cultivation in 1911 and funded an enormous eradication program; the federal ban was lifted in 1966 and authority passed to individual states.

Today, restrictions are a state-by-state patchwork — varying by species, variety, county, and permit status. Black currants (Ribes nigrum) are the most heavily restricted, because they are the most effective host for blister rust. Red, white, and pink currants are less susceptible and are permitted more broadly, though some states restrict them too. An additional complexity: a new, more virulent strain of blister rust has been documented in New England (UMass Amherst; US Forest Service), capable of infecting cultivars previously considered immune — this has led some states to tighten their permitted variety lists in recent years.

Delaware — Permit required for all Ribes; black currant and golden currant prohibited entirely.

Maine — Black currant prohibited statewide. All other Ribes banned in most southern and central counties (see Raintree's restriction page for county list and map).

Massachusetts — Black currant and jostaberry banned statewide. Red, white, and pink currants permitted in some towns only with a control area permit.

Michigan — Permit required for black currants (approved varieties only) and for red/white/pink currants depending on location. Contact MDARD for permit.

New Hampshire — Permit required (no fee) for all Ribes; customer must apply. Approved variety list has changed due to the new blister rust strain — verify current list.

New Jersey — Black currant requires annual grower permit and inspections. Red/white/pink currants banned in certain townships in Sussex, Passaic, and Morris counties.

North Carolina — All Ribes (currants and gooseberries) prohibited statewide.

Ohio — All Ribes nigrum prohibited except seven approved blister-rust-immune varieties: Consort, Coronet, Crusader, Titania, Lowes Auslese, Polar, and Willoughby.

Rhode Island — Black, clove, and golden currant prohibited statewide. All other Ribes require a permit.

Virginia — European black currant regulated; contact Virginia Department of Agriculture.

West Virginia — Statewide restrictions apply; contact state Department of Agriculture.

⚠ White pine proximity — everywhere

Regardless of your state's regulatory status, do not plant currants within 900 feet of five-needle white pines (Pinus strobus and related species). This is both a legal requirement in many states and sound horticultural practice. The blister rust fungus requires both hosts in proximity to complete its life cycle — eliminating proximity breaks the disease cycle. Five-needle pines include eastern white pine, western white pine, sugar pine, whitebark pine, limber pine, and bristlecone pine.

Choosing varieties

Raintree carries a wide range of currants across all four color types — red, white, pink, and black. The varieties below are currently part of the Raintree catalog; specific availability varies seasonally. Black currants are regulated in many eastern states due to white pine blister rust; verify your state's rules before ordering.

Red currants

The most familiar color type. Bright, sweet-tart flavor; excellent for jams, jellies, sauces, and fresh eating. All self-fertile.

Pink currants

Genetically related to red currants, but with sweeter, milder fruit. Excellent fresh and in jams. Self-fertile.

White currants

The sweetest, mildest currants — closer to a delicate grape than to red currants in flavor. Excellent fresh eating. Self-fertile.

Black currants

Pacific Northwest tip

The PNW is one of the most productive currant-growing regions in the United States — our cool, moist climate is close to ideal for the entire Ribes genus. Blister rust regulatory pressure is far lighter west of the Rockies than in New England; most varieties are freely available here. OSU specifically recommends Ben Sarek and Titania for black currants, and Jonkheer Van Tets, Red Lake, and Rovada for red currants. Currants are relatively free of serious pest and disease pressure in the maritime PNW compared to tree fruits — one of their genuine advantages here.

Pollination

Red, white, and pink currants are self-fertile — a single plant will produce a full crop without any other variety nearby (University of Minnesota Extension). They are all the same species (Ribes sativum); color is a varietal characteristic, not a species difference.

Black currants (Ribes nigrum) are mostly self-fertile as well, but some varieties produce significantly better with a second black currant variety nearby. Ben Sarek is one noted to benefit from cross-pollination for maximum yield, though it will produce fruit alone. Check the catalog page for each specific variety's pollination requirement. Where cross-pollination is desired, plant pollinizing bushes within range of bee flight — Raintree's guide cites 100 feet as a good working average, with no obstruction between plants.

Bees are the primary pollinators. Currants bloom early in spring — protect bloom-period plants from late frost when possible, and avoid spraying any pesticide during the bloom window.

Site selection and soil

Currants are genuinely adaptable — one of their great virtues as a home garden plant. They thrive in a wider range of conditions than most fruiting shrubs.

Sun

Full sun (at least 8 hours) produces the heaviest crops and best flavor development. Unlike most fruit plants, currants also tolerate partial shade reasonably well — particularly in hot, dry summer climates where afternoon shade reduces heat stress. In cool maritime climates like western WA and OR, full sun is always preferable. In hot interior climates (eastern WA, eastern OR, inland California), light afternoon shade actually improves fruit quality and reduces summer stress (Raintree source).

Soil

Currants tolerate a wide range of soils — they are not demanding in the way peaches or blueberries are. A moderately fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0 is ideal. They do not tolerate waterlogged conditions; avoid planting in low spots where water collects after rain. Amend planting areas with compost before planting and apply a 2–4 inch mulch layer after planting to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health. Due to their shallow, fibrous root systems, currants respond well to drip irrigation that keeps the canopy dry — reducing disease incidence (USU Extension).

Spacing

Space red, white, and pink currant bushes 4–5 feet apart. Black currants are more vigorous — space 5–6 feet apart (University of Minnesota Extension). This spacing allows for mature spread while maintaining adequate airflow between plants. In rows, allow enough space between rows for comfortable harvest access.

Planting

Plant in late fall or early spring while plants are dormant. Set bare-root starts so the root crown is at or just below soil level; potted plants can be set at the same depth as the container. After planting bare-root plants, prune all canes back to 6 buds to encourage vigorous new growth from the base (University of Minnesota Extension).

Pacific Northwest tip

In the maritime PNW, currants thrive with very little supplemental irrigation once established. Our naturally cool summers and moist winters are close to ideal. In eastern WA and OR, consistent summer irrigation is important — drip irrigation keeps the foliage dry and significantly reduces anthracnose and powdery mildew pressure. Avoid overhead sprinklers, which keep the canopy wet and favor fungal disease.

Growing in containers

Currants grow well in containers with attentive management. Use a minimum 10-gallon container as a final pot size. Rather than potting directly into a large container, increase pot size gradually over several years — this supports healthy root system development and reduces the risk of overwatering in excess soil volume.

Use a quality potting mix with added compost — not garden soil, which compacts in containers and drains poorly. For larger pots, use a mix that includes coarser particles for improved aeration. Water container currants when the soil is dry to the touch 1–2 inches down; the pot will feel lighter when it needs water. Container plants dry out faster than in-ground plants and need more frequent attention, especially in summer.

Pruning — the key to long-term productivity

Annual pruning is the single most important management practice for currants. The goal is to maintain a bush with productive wood of the right age — and to understand that red/white/pink and black currants have different fruiting habits that require different approaches (Utah State University Extension; It Grows in Alaska, UAF).

How currants bear — red/white/pink vs. black

Red, white, and pink currants are most productive on 2- and 3-year-old canes. Maintain a structure with roughly equal numbers of 1-, 2-, and 3-year-old canes — 3 to 4 of each age class (Cornell Cooperative Extension; USU Extension). Remove any cane older than 3 years, as it declines in productivity rapidly.

Black currants are most productive on 1-year-old wood (new shoots from the previous season). For black currants, target 10–12 canes per bush with roughly half being 1-year-old shoots and the rest 2–3 years old (UAF Extension). Anything older than 3 years should be removed — black currants decline faster than red types on old wood.

A mature, well-maintained bush has approximately 8–12 bearing canes in total (Cornell CCE). Always remove canes as close to the ground as possible — flush cuts at the base prevent stub regrowth. Remove any canes that touch the ground, which can encourage crown rot and disease.

For red and pink currants, an optional additional step after renewal pruning: trim lateral branches on remaining canes back to 2–3 buds to encourage productive fruit spur development along the cane (USU Extension).

Prune during dormancy — late winter or early spring before bud break. Avoid pruning during wet weather when disease transmission risk is highest.

Pacific Northwest tip

In the PNW, the late-winter pruning window (February–March) coincides with our wettest period. When possible, wait for a dry spell before making large cuts. Open canopy pruning — removing crossing canes and maintaining good airflow — dramatically reduces anthracnose and powdery mildew pressure in our humid maritime climate. An open bush dries faster after rain and is much healthier than a dense, crowded one.

Watering and feeding

Currants have a shallow, fibrous root system that benefits from consistent moisture. Aim for 1–2 inches of water per week during the growing season — reducing to once-weekly irrigation after harvest when active growth slows (USU Extension). Keep soil moist but not soggy; currants do not tolerate waterlogging. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses that deliver water to the root zone while keeping the canopy dry are the most effective approach, reducing fungal disease risk significantly.

Fertilize modestly. A 2-inch layer of well-rotted compost over the root zone in early spring provides adequate nutrition for most established bushes. If growth is weak or foliage looks pale, a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring can help. Do not fertilize after early summer — late-season fertilization encourages soft, frost-susceptible growth. Excessive fertilizer produces dense vegetative growth at the expense of fruit and increases disease susceptibility.

Keep a 2–4 inch mulch layer around the base of each bush, starting at the drip line and extending outward — this conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown of the plant to prevent rot.

Harvest

Currants ripen from late spring through late summer depending on variety and location. Fruit ripens in clusters (strigs) — the entire cluster often ripens at roughly the same time, making harvest efficient. The cluster can be picked as a unit and processed later, or individual berries stripped from the strig.

Ripe currants separate easily from the cluster and have fully developed color. Red, white, and pink currants can be left on the bush a few days past color development without quality loss — they hold well. Black currants should be harvested promptly once ripe.

For jam-making: harvest currants slightly before peak ripeness, when they are fully colored but still firm — pectin levels are highest at this stage, producing the best gel set. For fresh eating: allow to fully ripen and sweeten on the bush. Currants freeze exceptionally well; strip from the strigs and freeze on a sheet pan before transferring to bags for long-term storage.

Common problems

Currants are genuinely one of the lower-maintenance fruiting plants for home gardeners — particularly in the PNW where the climate suits them naturally. The following are the issues most worth knowing.

White Pine Blister Rust High — Black currants; regulatory concern

Caused by Cronartium ribicola. Currants serve as an alternate host in the disease cycle; the rust is far more damaging to five-needle pines than to the currants themselves. On currants, symptoms include yellow-orange spots on the upper leaf surface and orange blister-like structures on the undersides. Severe infections can defoliate plants but rarely kill them. The primary concern is transmission to nearby white pines, which is why state regulations exist.

  • Choose resistant or immune varieties where you are in a blister-rust-sensitive area or near five-needle pines
  • Do not plant within 900 feet of five-needle white pines
  • There are no fungicides labeled on currants for blister rust control (Ohio State University)
  • Red, white, and pink currants are less susceptible than black currants and pose lower risk to pines
  • The new virulent strain of blister rust documented in New England can infect previously immune varieties — if you are in the Northeast, verify your variety's current resistance status
Imported Currantworm (Currant Worm) High — can defoliate rapidly

The larva of a sawfly (Nematus ribesii). Small green caterpillars with black spots begin feeding at the base of the bush and work upward, skeletonizing leaves. Defoliation can appear to occur almost overnight. Multiple generations per season are possible.

  • Inspect daily once leaves appear in spring; populations can explode rapidly
  • Spinosad or Bt (for early instars) are the most effective organic controls; apply at first larva sighting
  • Hand-pick larvae and destroy; floating row cover can exclude adults
  • Ducks and chickens are effective biological controls where practical (Raintree source)
  • Shallow cultivation under bushes can expose egg cases and larvae to predators
Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) Moderate — PNW established

Drosophila suzukii— a vinegar fly with a serrated ovipositor allowing it to lay eggs in intact, ripe soft fruit. Larvae tunnel through fruit; first visible sign is often spotty softening or sap exuding from berries. Currants are susceptible as they approach full ripeness.

  • Monitor with apple cider vinegar or commercial SWD traps starting in early summer
  • Spinosad-based insecticides are the primary organic control; apply per label before heavy infestation
  • Harvest promptly at peak ripeness — do not leave ripe or overripe fruit on the bush
  • Refrigerate harvested fruit immediately

Currant Fruit Fly Moderate

Infested fruits contain tunneling maggots and ripen and fall prematurely. The adult fly lays eggs in developing fruit shortly after petal fall.

  • Apply spinosad or neem at petal fall; repeat per label if pressure is high
  • Pick up and destroy all fallen fruit promptly
  • Floating row cover during fruiting provides physical exclusion — tie base so pests cannot enter from below
  • Shallow cultivation under bushes exposes larvae and pupae to predators and birds
  • Plastic mulch during ripening can prevent larvae from entering the soil to pupate
Anthracnose Leaf Spot Moderate — wet climates

Fungal disease that causes brown spots on leaves, followed by yellowing and premature defoliation. More common in rainy seasons and on poorly pruned, dense bushes with limited airflow. Can weaken plants and reduce the following year's crop if severe.

  • Prune for open canopy and good airflow — the primary preventive measure
  • Rake and remove fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate overwintering inoculum
  • Copper fungicide applied in fall (before rains) and again in early spring can reduce infection
  • Avoid overhead irrigation; use drip or soaker systems
Aphids (Currant Aphid) Low–Moderate

Cryptomyzus ribis feeds on the undersides of young leaves, causing leaves to cup downward, blister, and turn reddish. Stems may develop sooty mold. A nuisance but rarely lethal; healthy, well-established bushes tolerate modest infestations without lasting harm.

  • Natural predators (lady beetles, parasitic wasps) often provide control — encourage with nearby habitat plantings (dill, yarrow)
  • Knock aphids off with a strong water spray; insecticidal soap for heavier infestations
  • Control ants, which protect aphid colonies from predators
  • Dormant oil in late winter reduces overwintering populations
Birds Moderate — harvest timing

Birds — particularly starlings, robins, and waxwings — readily eat ripe currants. In areas with high bird pressure, losses can be substantial.

  • Reflective bird scare tape provides some deterrence
  • Harvest promptly once fruit reaches peak color
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Low — monitor

BMSB is established in the PNW and feeds on many soft fruits; currants can be affected though they are not among the preferred hosts. Feeding causes poking-type damage and brown spots in affected fruit.

  • Harvest promptly; remove damaged fruit
  • If found in or near the home, vacuum rather than crushing

  • Dormant pruning during a dry window — remove canes to maintain correct age structure for your currant type
  • Apply dormant oil spray to reduce overwintering aphid eggs and scale
  • Apply copper fungicide if anthracnose was a problem the previous season
  • Remove and dispose of all fallen leaf debris from autumn
  • Check trunk guards against voles/rabbits; renew if needed
Early Spring Mar - Apr
  • Currants break dormancy early — among the first fruiting plants to leaf out; monitor for late frost
  • Do NOT spray any pesticide during bloom — protect bee pollinators

Pacific Northwest
