Why grow dogwoods?
The dogwood genus (Cornus) gives the home grower two distinctly different plants for two different purposes. The headliner for an edible landscape is the Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), a long-lived small tree or large shrub native to southern Europe and southwest Asia, prized since antiquity for its tart red drupes and used in syrups, preserves, and traditional liqueurs across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. Archaeological seeds in Iron Age pottery date its cultivation to at least 800 BCE. The plant rewards patience — grafted trees fruit within a few years, seedlings take much longer — and a mature Cornelian cherry in a Kyiv botanical garden has been documented at 150–200 years old and still bearing.
The secondary players in this guide are the red and yellow twig dogwoods (Cornus sericea, C. alba, and their cultivars) — multi-stemmed shrubs grown not for edible fruit but for the brilliant red, coral, or yellow stems they reveal once the leaves drop. In a winter landscape, a thicket of bare twig dogwood against snow or a dark conifer is among the most striking effects available to a temperate gardener. They also produce small white fruits that wildlife — particularly songbirds — favor heavily.
Two qualities make this genus uniquely valuable. First, Cornelian cherry is the earliest meaningful bloomer in most temperate yards — small clusters of bright yellow flowers open in late winter, weeks before forsythia, providing critical early-season forage for emerging native bees. Second, both groups are remarkably tough: heavy clay, alkaline soil, partial shade, drought once established, and the kinds of urban conditions that defeat most fruiting plants. Cornelian cherry is also notably resistant to dogwood anthracnose, the disease that has devastated the native flowering dogwood (C. florida) across much of the eastern United States.
Two distinct dogwoods — choosing the right one
Raintree's dogwood collection encompasses two very different plants united by genus. Cornus mas — Cornelian cherry — is the edible ornamental: a long-lived small tree or large shrub grown equally for its cloud of tiny yellow flowers in late winter, its glossy red or yellow fruit in late summer, and its extraordinary reliability in a wide range of climates. The Ukrainian fruiting varieties Raintree carries represent the best-selected, most productive Cornelian cherries available — decades of breeding work at botanical gardens in Kyiv focused on fruit size, yield, and flavor.
Red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea and C. alba) is a different proposition: a native North American suckering shrub grown primarily for its brilliant crimson stems in winter, its effectiveness as a fast, dense hedge or hedgerow plant, and its exceptional tolerance of wet, shaded, and difficult sites where little else thrives. It also provides white flowers for pollinators in late spring, blue-white berries for birds in fall, and vivid red fall foliage — a four-season performer that asks almost nothing.
The familiar large-flowered ornamental dogwood of eastern North American forests —Cornus florida, with its large white or pink bracts — is not part of the Raintree catalog. Raintree's dogwood collection is the edible/utilitarian group: Cornus mas for fruit production and ornamental beauty, and Cornus sericea/C. alba for hedging, wildlife value, and winter stem color. All Cornus species cannot be shipped to Florida.
Cornelian cherry — Cornus mas
Cornelian cherry is one of the most underappreciated edible ornamentals in temperate horticulture. It blooms before almost everything else in the garden — typically February through March, depending on location — in clouds of tiny bright yellow flowers that cover every bare stem in a haze of butter-yellow at the end of winter. Bee activity around a blooming Cornelian cherry on the first warm days of late February is remarkable: it is one of the only significant pollen and nectar sources available to bees that early in the season, and the value of that early forage cannot be overstated.
The fruit that follows — ripening in August through September — is a glossy, elongated drupe about the size of a large olive, typically deep red or (in 'Yellow') amber-yellow. The flavor is tart and intensely cherry-like, somewhere between cranberry and sour cherry, with a complexity that raw fruit alone does not fully convey. Cooked into jelly, syrup, sauce, or wine, the fruit's full character emerges — bright, fragrant, and distinctive. High in Vitamins A and C. The fruit is historically significant in European and Central Asian cuisines, where it has been cultivated for at least 7,000 years.
As an ornamental plant, Cornelian cherry delivers year-round interest: the late-winter bloom, clean pointed oval leaves through summer, vivid red fruit in fall often partially hidden by foliage (adding a pleasant treasure-hunt quality to harvest), good yellow to red fall leaf color, and attractive bark with age. It is one of the most disease-resistant fruiting plants in the catalog — not prone to the fungal, bacterial, and insect issues that attend most fruit trees.
Site, soil, and pollination
Cornus mas is exceptionally adaptable. It grows in full sun to partial shade, in acid to mildly alkaline soils (pH 5.5–7.5), and tolerates heavy clay, moderate drought once established, and exposed positions. It is wind-resistant and cold-hardy to approximately −25°F when dormant. For best fruit production, provide at least half a day of direct sunlight — light shade produces a healthy plant with reduced yield.
Cornelian cherry is partially self-fertile, meaning a single plant will produce some fruit on its own. However, planting two different varieties within bee range (100 feet or less) substantially improves fruit set and yield. Cross-pollination between any two C. mas varieties works — there is no compatibility matching required beyond having two different named selections. Grafted varieties (as sold by Raintree) begin fruiting 1–2 years after transplanting; seedling-grown plants can take 6–10 years to fruit.
Pruning and training
Cornus mas naturally develops a multi-stemmed shrubby form and requires very little pruning. It can be trained to a single trunk over several years by removing basal stems, producing a small tree form reaching 15–20 feet. As a multi-stemmed shrub it typically matures at 10–15 feet tall and wide. Prune lightly to shape in late winter before bloom, or after harvest in fall. Avoid heavy pruning that removes large amounts of flowering wood — flowers are produced on one- and two-year-old wood. No severe renovation pruning is normally required; the plant is long-lived and self-renewing.
Harvest
Fruit ripens unevenly over several weeks in August through September, depending on variety and location. Ripe fruit is soft to gentle pressure and detaches easily. The easiest harvest method for a loaded tree is to spread a tarp or sheet under the canopy, wait until the first fruits begin to drop naturally (indicating the crop is approaching peak), then gently shake individual branches — ripe fruit falls freely. Harvest promptly from the ground as fallen fruit softens quickly and can become slippery. Ripe fruit can be refrigerated for one to two weeks; it freezes excellently for long-term storage and use in cooked preparations.
Cornelian cherry thrives in the PNW. The mild late-winter temperatures regularly allow bloom as early as late January in the Willamette Valley, making it the first significant bee forage of the year. The fruit ripens reliably in August — well before fall rains — in both western and eastern PNW locations. C. mas is not prone to fire blight in maritime PNW conditions; east of the Cascades, fire blight is a more relevant concern. Plant in full sun for best fruit production; the partial shade that many PNW gardens offer reduces yield but the plant remains healthy and ornamental. Two varieties planted together — even in a mixed hedge — will dramatically outperform a single-variety planting in fruit production.

Red twig dogwood — Cornus sericea and C. alba
Red twig dogwood is one of the most effective and lowest-maintenance landscape shrubs available for difficult sites. Its primary ornamental value is the brilliant crimson-red stems that glow against snow and bare earth from November through March — a display that makes it indispensable in winter gardens and hedgerows. The winter stem color is produced only on young wood: one- and two-year-old stems are the most brilliantly colored, older stems becoming grey-brown. This means the pruning strategy is directly tied to the ornamental goal.
Beyond winter color, red twig dogwood provides white flower clusters in late spring that attract pollinators; blue-white waxy fruit clusters in fall that are eagerly eaten by birds (not palatable to humans); vivid red to burgundy fall foliage; and a dense, suckering habit that makes it outstanding for erosion control, stream-bank stabilization, naturalized hedgerows, and fast screening. It spreads by underground suckers to form broad multi-stemmed colonies — a feature that is either an asset or a liability depending on the situation.
Site, pruning, and management
Red twig dogwood is not fussy. It grows in full sun to full shade, tolerates clay soils, wet conditions (including seasonally flooded sites), and moderate drought once established. It actively prefers moist locations — stream banks, low spots, areas with seasonally high water tables — and performs better in these conditions than most competing landscape plants. Plant 3–4 feet apart for a dense hedge; allow more spacing where the spreading habit is welcome.
To maintain the best winter stem color, prune hard every two to three years — cutting the oldest, greyest stems to the ground in early spring before growth begins. This renews the planting with young, vibrantly colored wood. A light annual approach — removing one-third of the oldest stems each spring — also works and maintains plant size while ensuring constant renewal of colorful young wood. Prune in early spring only; pruning in fall removes potential winter color.

Common problems
A red twig dogwood that has lost its brilliant winter color is simply not being pruned often enough. Old wood fades to grey-brown and is no longer ornamental in winter.
- Cut all stems to 6–12 inches from the ground in early spring every 2–3 years, or remove the oldest one-third of stems annually
- The brilliance of the stem color is directly proportional to how recently the wood was produced — young stems are always the most vivid
- Do not cut in fall; wait until late winter or early spring before new growth begins
White powdery coating on the surface of leaves in late summer, particularly in shaded or low-airflow locations. Rarely affects tree health or fruit production.

- Improve air circulation by spacing plants adequately and removing any crowded inner branching during dormant pruning
- Avoid overhead irrigation — water at the base
- Potassium bicarbonate sprays provide control if desired; in most cases the plant grows through it without intervention
Synanthedon scitula is a clearwing moth whose larvae bore into the cambium of Cornus species, causing dieback of individual limbs, swelling at entry points, and a characteristic sawdust-like frass at the wound. Most common on stressed trees or trees with mechanical injuries.
- Prevent stress: adequate water and nutrition reduce susceptibility significantly
- Avoid wounding the trunk and lower limbs with mowers and string trimmers — the most common entry point for borers is a mowing wound
- Maintain a mulched zone around the trunk, keeping grass and equipment away from the bark
- Prune out any infested limbs well below the damage; no effective curative spray is available to home gardeners once larvae are inside the wood
A Cornelian cherry that blooms abundantly but produces little fruit is either missing a pollinizer, experiencing poor bee activity during the bloom window, or was affected by frost during flowering.

- Late winter frost during bloom (which in February–March is common in many zones) can kill open flowers; fruit set from frost-damaged flowers is low
