What is espalier?
The word "espalier" (ess-PAL-yay) traces to the French, originally referring to the trellis structure itself. Today it describes both the training system and the tree shaped by it: a fruit tree pruned and guided to grow flat along a single plane, its branches arranged in deliberate horizontal tiers against a wall, fence, or freestanding trellis.
The technique was refined in medieval Europe, where fruit trees were trained against the stone walls of castle courtyards and monastery gardens. The reflected warmth of south-facing masonry extended the growing season, allowing fruit to ripen in climates that would otherwise fall short. Espaliers later became prized in the formal kitchen gardens of French and Belgian châteaux, reaching extraordinary levels of complexity and artistry. George Washington maintained espalier cordon fences at Mount Vernon; Thomas Jefferson studied French training systems with deep interest.
For today's home grower, the appeal is more practical than historical. A properly trained espalier turns a narrow strip along a fence line or south-facing wall into a productive apple or pear planting — without requiring the space of a standard orchard. Fruit stays at arm's reach. Light reaches every spur. Harvest, pruning, and pest management all become easier when the tree is flat, open, and at eye level.
Why apples and pears? These two fruits are by far the best candidates for espalier training, and they are the only varieties Raintree offers in espalier form. Both bear fruit on long-lived spurs — short, stubby shoots that build up along the main branches over years, bearing fruit clusters reliably season after season. Their young wood is supple enough to bend and tie without snapping, and they respond well to the repeated summer pruning that keeps the form tidy. Stone fruits (cherries, peaches, plums) have different fruiting habits and disease sensitivities that make them more challenging to maintain in a strict horizontal cordon. Is espalier right for you? Risks and common complaints
Espalier is genuinely beautiful and genuinely productive — but it is not a low-effort planting. Many gardeners purchase an espalier expecting an attractive, low-maintenance ornamental and discover something quite different. The realities below come from extension office reports (OSU, UC ANR, RHS), the Home Orchard Society, and gardener feedback Raintree has received over the years. Read them honestly before purchasing.
The most common complaints from home gardeners
An espalier requires 2–4 rounds of summer pruning plus dormant pruning every year — for the entire life of the tree. Skipped pruning compounds quickly: a single missed summer means a year of misshapen growth that takes seasons to correct. Unlike a free-standing tree where neglect produces a messy but still functional tree, neglected espalier loses its form, its productivity, and its appeal simultaneously.
- Plan for 30 minutes of focused pruning every 4–6 weeks during the growing season
- If you travel for extended periods in mid-late summer, espalier may not be a fit
- Consider a less demanding form (open-center bush apple, espalier-lite informal training) if your time is constrained
First-year espaliers should not be expected to fruit at all — they are establishing roots and structure. Realistic timeline: 2–3 years to first meaningful crop, 4–5 years to consistent production. Light yields can also indicate pollination problems, summer pruning that removed developing spurs, or insufficient sun. Espaliers in less than 8 hours of direct sun will look attractive but produce poorly.

Many home gardeners underestimate the load a mature, fruit-laden espalier puts on its support system. Trellis posts that seem sturdy at planting time can rack, lean, or rot at the soil line within 5–10 years. Sagging wires let branches drop out of plane and the form degrades.

- Specify 12-gauge galvanized wire (lighter gauges sag); use turnbuckles for re-tensioning
- Plan to retension wires every 2–3 years and replace wood posts every 15–20 years
- Metal posts (T-posts, galvanized pipe) outlast wood by decades
Single-variety espaliers concentrate the tree's productivity into just 4–6 main scaffold branches. If a branch breaks under fruit load, gets damaged by wind, or dies back from canker, you lose a significant portion of the productive structure — and unlike a normal tree, the tree cannot regrow that branch in the same form. Combination espaliers (multiple varieties grafted to one trunk) compound the risk: losing a tier means losing a variety entirely.
- Thin fruit aggressively to reduce branch load — espaliers cannot carry the same crop load as a free-standing tree
- Support heavily-loaded branches with temporary props during peak crop
- Inspect graft unions on combo trees every spring for signs of stress
- Practice scrupulous tool sanitation between pruning cuts to prevent canker transmission
Established espaliers are stunning. Establishing espaliers are awkward. Years 1–3 typically show gaps in the tiers, unbalanced growth where one side outgrows the other, and visible ties and clips that are not aesthetic. - The first 2–3 years are about establishing structure, not appearance
- One side of the tree may outgrow the other — this is normal; correct with summer pruning bias toward the stronger side
- Use natural jute twine or matching-color tree ties for cleaner appearance
- If immediate visual impact is the goal, espalier is not the right choice
Espaliers grow flat against walls or close to fences, which can create still-air conditions where humidity stays elevated. This favors fungal disease — scab, mildew, and (for pears) fire blight pressure can be higher than for free-standing trees. The compact form also concentrates pest activity: codling moth and apple maggot fly can damage a large fraction of an espalier crop quickly.

- Allow 6–12" between the tree and the wall for airflow

Combination espalier trees with 3–4 varieties grafted onto a single trunk are visually appealing and pollination-convenient, but each variety grows at its own pace. The most vigorous variety can dominate, suppressing or even killing slower-growing varieties on other tiers within 5–10 years. This is a documented risk with all "fruit cocktail" or combination trees, not just espaliers.
- Prune the dominant variety more aggressively to keep tiers balanced
- Expect 1–2 of the original varieties to fade over a decade
- The variety on the lowest tier is generally most vigorous
- If you want all varieties to persist long-term, plant separate single-variety espaliers instead
Espalier requires unfamiliar techniques: bending without breaking, tying without girdling, summer pruning to redirect rather than remove growth. Early mistakes are common and can cause permanent structural damage. Branches forced too aggressively snap at the graft union; ties left too long ring the bark; over-aggressive summer pruning removes the spurs the tree needs to fruit.

Who espalier is best for
Espalier rewards a specific kind of grower. Be honest about whether you match this profile before purchasing:
- You enjoy regular hands-on attention. The summer pruning sessions are the practice — if you find pruning rewarding, espalier suits you.
- You have a long-term plan for the location. Espaliers cannot be moved once established. A 20-year commitment to the location is the right framing.
- Space is constrained. If you have unlimited orchard space, espalier offers no practical advantage over a normal tree — only aesthetic.
- You have a south- or southwest-facing wall, fence, or trellis location with 8+ hours of direct sun. Without the wall and the sun, the form's main practical advantages are lost.
- You're willing to accept fewer pounds of fruit per tree in exchange for higher density per linear foot of fence and the aesthetic.
- You're patient. The reward arrives in year 4–6, not year 1.
Who espalier is NOT for
- Beginners who haven't grown a regular fruit tree before — start with a standard apple or pear; espalier is graduate-level training
- Renters or anyone who may move within 5 years — you won't see the fruit, and the tree can't be relocated
- Pure ornamental gardens where pollination won't be planned for — without a compatible pollinizer, even a beautiful espalier won't fruit reliably
- Hands-off gardeners who want a "plant it and forget it" tree — espalier is the opposite
- Sites with less than 8 hours of summer sun — you'll have an attractive structure with little fruit
- Heavily browsed properties where deer can reach the wall — espaliers are particularly vulnerable since deer can browse the entire productive surface easily
If you love the espalier look but want lower commitment, consider informal espalier — apples or pears trained with the same general principles (flat plane, against a wall or fence) but without the rigid horizontal cordon discipline. You still get the wall-warmth advantage and most of the aesthetic, but with much more pruning forgiveness. Many home growers actually prefer informal espalier once they understand the maintenance demands of formal cordon.

Formats offered
3-Tier espalier
Three horizontal pairs of branches at approximately 1½, 2½, and 3½ feet above the graft union. The most common format; provides the full ladder-like tiered silhouette when mature. Single-variety or combo (multi-grafted) trees available.
2-Tier espalier
The top two tiers only — branches at approximately 2½ and 3½ feet. A slightly more compact option that suits shorter fence sections or walls with limited vertical run.
Combo variety trees
Multiple apple varieties bud-grafted onto a single trunk. Each branch tier is a different variety — the varieties on the same tree cross-pollinate each other, so no additional pollinizer tree is needed in most cases. Each tier is labeled at shipping.
Rootstocks
Rootstock determines mature tree size and is matched to the espalier format:
- Dwarf M26 (apple espaliers): A dwarfing rootstock well-suited to espalier culture. Produces a manageable tree well-matched to a 3- or 4-tier horizontal cordon. Final spread approximately 10–12 feet. Requires staking or permanent trellis support throughout its life — M26-rooted trees do not fully anchor themselves and will lean without support. (RHS)
- Semi-dwarf MM106 (combo espalier trees): A semi-dwarfing rootstock with a slightly larger final spread, approximately 12–15 feet. More vigorous than M26; good for gardeners who want a larger espalier or less intensive pruning. Also benefits from permanent trellis support. (RHS)
Both rootstocks produce trees that keep fruit within comfortable reach — no ladder required for a well-maintained espalier.
Shipping note — branches trimmed to 6"
To accommodate shipping box dimensions, all espalier branches are trimmed back to approximately 6 inches at the time of packing. This is normal and expected — the branches will extend and fill in during the first growing season. Each tier is labeled so you know which variety is on which arm.
Site selection
Sun
Espalier fruit trees require a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight, measured through the main growing season (late June through early August). Sun exposure drives two critical outcomes: flower bud initiation for the following year, and fruit ripening and sugar development in the current season. A site with less than 8 hours of sun will produce an attractive tree with poor fruit. South- or southwest-facing walls, fences, and trellises are ideal — the slight warmth reflected from a light-colored wall can meaningfully extend the effective growing season, especially for apples in cooler climates. The wall or structure
Espaliers are traditionally grown against walls for good reason. A south- or west-facing masonry wall stores heat during the day and releases it at night, moderating temperature around the tree, encouraging slightly earlier bloom, and protecting developing fruitlets from late spring frosts. In the Pacific Northwest, a south-facing wall can enable varieties to ripen that would otherwise struggle in open ground. (OSU Extension)
Espaliers also grow well on freestanding trellis systems, on existing fences, or along wires strung between posts. Any solid support structure works as long as it can bear the long-term weight of a mature, loaded tree — considerably more than it looks at planting time.
Soil
Apples and pears prefer well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Avoid low spots where water collects after rain — soggy roots stress both species and invite root rot. Clay soils can work but should be amended with compost or coarse organic matter to improve drainage before planting. Sandy soils drain quickly but benefit from consistent irrigation and organic mulch to retain moisture through summer. A soil test before planting is the most reliable way to understand what amendments, if any, your site needs; your local cooperative extension office can provide region-specific guidance on amendment rates.
Trellis and support
A sturdy, permanent support structure is not optional for espalier — it is a prerequisite. Both M26- and MM106-rooted espalier trees need trellis support for life; unlike standard-sized apple trees, the dwarfing rootstocks used for espalier do not anchor themselves strongly enough to stand unsupported under the weight of a mature, fruit-loaded tree. Freestanding trellis
The classic approach uses 4×4 wooden posts set 8 feet apart (to match typical tree spacing), with 12-gauge or heavier galvanized wire stretched between them at 18-inch vertical intervals. Three wires support a 3-tier espalier. End posts should be braced with diagonal supports or set in concrete to handle the wire tension. Posts should extend 6–7 feet above ground to allow adequate height for the uppermost tier and future maintenance access. (OSU Extension PNW-400; Ask Extension)
Wire should remain at least 2 inches away from any adjacent wall surface to allow air circulation behind the branches — trapped moisture increases fungal disease pressure on both apples and pears.
Build the trellis or install your wall wires before planting, not after. Digging post holes and tensioning wire around an already-planted tree is difficult and risks root damage. A day's work upfront saves a season's frustration.
Pollination
Apples and pears are not self-fertile as a rule, and cross-pollination from a second compatible variety is needed for reliable fruit production. Even varieties sometimes described as "self-fertile" produce significantly larger and higher-quality crops when a pollinizer is nearby. Plan for pollination from the start — it is much easier to establish two trees together than to add a second tree later.
Combo variety trees
Raintree's combo espalier trees carry multiple varieties grafted onto a single stem — each tier labeled with its own variety. Because those varieties share the same plant and bloom at overlapping times, they cross-pollinate each other. In most cases, no additional pollinizer tree is needed for a combo tree. The varieties are selected specifically to have compatible bloom windows.
Single-variety trees
If you purchase a single-variety apple or pear espalier, you will need at least one other compatible variety planted within 50 feet. Use Raintree's apple pollination chart to confirm compatibility — not all apple varieties can pollinate each other, and bloom timing must overlap. For pears, European pears generally pollinate other European pears blooming at the same time; Asian pears pollinate other Asian pears. Placement and pollinators
Pollinizer trees should be no further than 50 feet from the tree they are to pollinate — the shorter the distance, the more reliable the fruit set. Bees are the primary pollinators for both apples and pears. Avoid applying any insecticides during the bloom window (typically 7–10 days in spring), as even organic insecticides can harm bees actively visiting flowers. In cool, wet springs when bee activity is suppressed, hand pollination — transferring pollen from open male flowers to open female flowers using a soft brush — can meaningfully improve fruit set. Asian pears and European pears are generally not cross-compatible. If you grow Asian pear espaliers, ensure your pollinizer is also an Asian pear variety with overlapping bloom. Check the Raintree pollination chart before purchasing.
Planting
When to plant
Raintree ships espalier trees as container plants during the spring season (mid-February through end of May) and, in some cases, as bareroot stock earlier in spring. Plant container-grown trees after the last frost date for your area, once soil can be worked. Bareroot trees should go in the ground in late winter while still fully dormant. Both types establish well in spring; summer planting in warm climates requires more irrigation vigilance.
How to plant
- Position the tree 6–12 inches in front of your trellis or wall — close enough for easy training, far enough for air circulation and root development.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than necessary. The graft union (the slightly swollen node where the scion meets the rootstock) must remain 2–3 inches above the final soil line. If the graft union is buried, the scion variety can root and the dwarfing rootstock effect is lost. (Year Round Harvest; RHS)
- Backfill with native soil mixed with compost. Do not add fertilizer directly to the planting hole — direct contact can burn tender new roots.
- Water thoroughly and apply 2–4 inches of mulch over the root zone. Keep mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the trunk base to discourage voles and prevent crown rot.
- Immediately begin tying branches to the trellis wires using soft tree ties, figure-eight loops, or strips of cloth. The aim is gentle guidance, not constriction — check ties every few weeks as the branch thickens.
PNW soils west of the Cascades are often already within the preferred pH range for apples and pears — test before amending. A south- or southwest-facing wall dramatically improves ripening in cooler-summer coastal locations. Pruning and training
"The most important aspect of growing an espaliered tree is pruning." — Cody Copp, OSU Extension horticulturist. Espalier requires more frequent pruning than an open-canopy tree, not less. Unlike a standard fruit tree pruned once a year in dormancy, espalier demands attention during the growing season to keep the form and prevent the tree from reverting to its instinct to grow upward. The reward for consistent pruning is a tree that remains both beautiful and fruitful year after year.
Summer pruning — the primary tool for espalier
Summer pruning is the backbone of espalier maintenance, and it differs from dormant pruning in an important way: summer pruning suppresses growth rather than encouraging it. By removing soft new shoots during the growing season, you redirect the tree's energy from vegetative extension into fruit spur development — which is exactly what an espalier needs. For established espalier apples, summer pruning typically begins once the lower third of the current season's new shoots has turned woody — generally mid- to late August for apples in most zones, somewhat earlier for pears (late July). (RHS)
- Side shoots growing from the horizontal arms: cut back to 2–4 leaves from the base (approximately 2–4 inches). This is "spur pruning" — it encourages the development of fruiting spurs at the base of the cut shoot.
- Secondary shoots growing from already-pruned side shoots: cut back to 1 leaf above the basal cluster.
- Any shoots growing perpendicular to the trellis plane (straight toward or away from the wall): remove entirely. They destroy the flat form and are unproductive.
- Vigorous upright "water sprouts"Â growing from the main arms: rub or cut off as soon as they appear. Left unchecked, these rapidly shade out the form below them and dominate growth.

Dormant pruning — support for summer
Dormant (winter) pruning encourages vigor — so it is used sparingly on established espalier trees to avoid generating the excessive vegetative growth that works against the trained form. On established espaliers, dormant pruning is mainly corrective: removing any dead, diseased, or crossing wood; shortening any side shoots that were not summer-pruned; and removing branches that have escaped the flat plane. Do not prune too late in winter: apples and pears begin to "bleed" sap as temperatures warm in late winter, and heavy cuts at that point waste the tree's resources. In most PNW locations, dormant pruning between December and February is appropriate.
Training the tiers — year by year
Raintree's pre-trained trees arrive with the basic tier structure established. Your job in the first years is to extend and fill in those tiers to their full width, and to develop the fruiting spurs that will carry your harvest. Below is a general progression:
Spur renewal
Fruiting spurs are long-lived but not immortal. After several years, old spurs become congested with small, weakly-branching shoots and fruit quality declines. Starting around year 4–5, begin renewing spurs on a rotation: in a given dormant season, remove all spurs along one branch of the lowest tier to encourage a fresh set of spurs to develop from that arm. The following year, renew the opposite arm of that tier. Work your way up the espalier over subsequent years, one arm at a time. This prevents the whole tree from declining simultaneously and keeps production consistent. (OSU Extension; Ask Extension)
Espalier works best with spur-bearing apple and pear varieties, which produce fruit on short spurs close to the permanent branches. Tip-bearing varieties — which fruit at the ends of the previous year's growth — cannot be effectively summer-pruned without removing the fruiting wood. Watering and fertilizing
Water
Espalier trees against a wall may receive less rainfall than open-ground trees — the wall or overhang can deflect rain away from the root zone. Check soil moisture regularly and do not assume natural rainfall is sufficient, particularly for trees within 18 inches of a building. Target approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone during the growing season, delivered deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly every day. Shallow frequent watering produces a wet surface and a dry root zone — the opposite of what the tree needs.
In the Pacific Northwest, supplemental irrigation is typically needed from July onward, precisely when fruit is sizing and developing flavor. Drip irrigation delivers water to the root zone while keeping foliage dry, reducing fungal disease pressure on both apples and pears.
Fertilizing
An all-purpose balanced fertilizer or 2–3 inches of well-rotted compost applied over the root zone in early spring is appropriate for most sites. If the tree is producing 1 foot or more of new growth annually and foliage is healthy and dark green, additional fertilizer is likely unnecessary. Avoid applying nitrogen fertilizer after early summer — late-season nitrogen promotes soft, juvenile growth that is vulnerable to winter damage and more susceptible to fire blight (a serious bacterial disease of apples and pears). Mulch with 2–4 inches of straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves, keeping it back from the trunk base.
Excessively fertile soil can work against espalier goals by promoting the vigorous vegetative growth you are trying to suppress through summer pruning. If your tree is producing an excessive amount of shoot growth and little fruit, ease off fertilizer before increasing it.
Pests and common problems
A bacterial disease (Erwinia amylovora) causing rapid dieback of shoots, flowers, and branches — the affected wood turns dark and takes on a "shepherd's crook" bend at the tip. Pears are especially susceptible; some apple varieties are moderately resistant. Espalier's open form improves airflow, which helps, but the training cuts required can become infection entry points if made at the wrong time.
- Select fire blight-resistant varieties where possible; ask Raintree staff for variety-specific resistance ratings
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer — lush, soft growth is far more susceptible than moderate, firm growth
- Do not prune during bloom or wet weather; prune in dry conditions
- Remove infected wood promptly, cutting 8–12 inches below the visible infection margin; sterilize pruning tools between cuts with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a 10% bleach solution
- Copper-based sprays applied at tight cluster to pink bud stage can reduce infection; consult OSU Extension or your local cooperative extension office for a spray timing calendar specific to your region
Deer browse young apple and pear shoots readily, and an espalier tree at fence height is especially accessible. A single night of deer browsing can set back a year's worth of careful training.
- An 8-foot woven wire deer fence is the most reliable protection
- Individual hardware cloth cages protect young espaliers during establishment years
- Commercial repellents may provide short-term deterrence but are not reliable season-long
Voles and mice chew bark from the base of trunks and exposed roots, typically under snow cover or mulch piled against the crown. On dwarf-rooted trees like M26, girdling damage near the graft union is especially serious — it can kill the tree outright.
- Keep mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the trunk base year-round
- Wrap the lower trunk in vinyl tree guards or hardware cloth from ground level to 12 inches before snow arrives in fall
- Keep grass and weeds cleared 1–2 feet from the trunk base
- Check for damage in early spring when snow recedes
The codling moth larva is the classic "worm in the apple." Females lay eggs on developing fruit and foliage; larvae tunnel into the core, often not visible externally until harvest. One of the most significant insect pests of apple and pear in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the US.
- Monitor with pheromone traps from petal fall onward; contact your local extension office for degree-day spray timing thresholds
- Kaolin clay applied to developing fruit from petal fall creates a physical barrier that deters egg-laying
- Spinosad (Monterey Garden Insect Spray; Entrust SC for organic) is effective when timed to first egg hatch — follow label directions; WSU Tree Fruit recommends timing to degree-day accumulation models
- Paper or cardboard trunk bands can trap overwintering larvae in fall — remove and destroy in winter
- An espalier's open form makes spray coverage easier than a standard tree canopy — a practical advantage
A fungal disease (Venturia inaequalis) causing dark, corky scab lesions on fruit and olive-colored lesions on leaves. Severe infections defoliate trees and render fruit unmarketable. A serious problem in the wet springs of the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, and the upper Midwest.
- Choose scab-resistant varieties when possible (Honeycrisp has moderate resistance; Liberty and Freedom are highly resistant)
- The open, flat form of an espalier improves air circulation and drying compared to a dense canopy — this helps reduce scab pressure
- Apply protective copper or sulfur sprays from green tip through petal fall, following the extension-recommended spray timing for your region
- Remove fallen leaves promptly in autumn — scab overwinters on leaf debris

Vertical splits in bark appear in early spring, usually on the south or east side of the trunk, caused by the cycle of warm days followed by freezing nights. Sap warms in the sun, then freezes rapidly at night, rupturing bark cells. Young espalier trunks with smooth bark are vulnerable; older, rougher-barked trunks are more resistant.
- Whitewash the trunk and lower main arms with interior latex paint diluted 50/50 with water each fall; this reflects heat and moderates temperature swings
- Avoid planting in frost pockets where cold air pools and temperature swings are most extreme
