Among the oldest cultivated fruits in the world — and one of the most rewarding choices for the home orchard. With the right variety and a warm, sheltered site, figs are surprisingly unfussy, long-lived, and remarkably productive.

Why grow figs?
Figs (Ficus carica) are one of the oldest cultivated fruits on Earth — domesticated in the Levant at least 11,000 years ago, predating wheat and barley, and a defining crop of Mediterranean civilization ever since. The plant belongs to the mulberry family (Moraceae) and is, botanically, a remarkable thing: the "fruit" is actually a hollow inverted flower cluster (a syconium) that ripens around hundreds of tiny flowers inside. When you eat a fresh fig, you are eating its hidden inflorescence. The home-grown advantage with figs is greater than with almost any other fruit: a fully ripe fig is so soft and perishable it essentially cannot be shipped, so the figs sold fresh in most U.S. grocery stores are picked underripe and never reach full flavor.
Modern home growers benefit from a generation of breeding that has produced figs hardy well outside the Mediterranean. While most figs grow best in USDA zones 8 to 10, cold-hardy cultivars like Chicago Hardy, Brown Turkey, and Celeste can succeed in zones 5 to 7 with proper siting (south-facing walls, thick winter mulch) — and even in colder regions, figs grow well in large containers brought indoors over winter. Common-type figs are parthenocarpic, meaning they fruit without pollination, so the specialized fig wasp required by some Mediterranean types is not needed.
Microclimate is everything with figs. Even within a single yard, a fig planted against a south- or west-facing masonry wall will dramatically outperform one planted in the open — radiated heat from the wall extends the season and protects winter wood. Figs that die back to the ground in cold winters typically re-sprout from the roots and still produce a main crop on new wood, but the earlier breba crop on year-old wood will be lost. Match cultivar to climate, give the plant the warmest spot you have, and figs are among the most rewarding fruits a home grower can plant.
Choosing varieties

Understanding the two crops
Many fig varieties produce two distinct crops each season, though this depends on both variety and location. Understanding which crop your variety produces — and when — drives pruning, site selection, and climate matching.

USDA hardiness zone
Figs are hardy in USDA Zones 7–11. This rating reflects the minimum winter temperature a properly hardened plant can typically survive. In Zone 7, top growth often dies back in hard winters but plants resprout vigorously from the roots. Several varieties, including Chicago Hardy and Brown Turkey, offer better-than-average cold tolerance and are the recommended choices for Zone 7 and at the northern edge of the range. Chill hours
Unlike most deciduous fruit trees, figs have a very low chilling requirement — generally under 300 hours, and sometimes as few as 100. This makes figs well suited to mild-winter climates where other fruit crops may struggle to meet their chill requirements. In most regions where figs can be grown in the ground, accumulating sufficient chill hours is not a concern.
In western WA and OR, the limiting factor for figs is summer heat rather than winter cold. The main crop needs a long, warm summer to ripen before fall frosts — choose early-ripening varieties and plant against a south-facing wall or in a heat-accumulating microclimate. The breba crop, which ripens on prior-year wood in early summer, is often the more reliable harvest west of the Cascades. Desert King is the single most reliably-ripening fig in the PNW— it's the safest starter variety for the region.
Pollination
All fig varieties sold by Raintree are parthenocarpic common figs— they set fruit without any pollination or pollenizer variety. A single tree produces a full crop on its own. This makes figs unusually convenient: no compatibility groups to track, no second variety needed, and no concerns about bloom timing for pollination purposes.
What looks like the "fruit" of a fig is actually a hollow, fleshy receptacle called asyconium. The actual flowers are borne entirely inside it and are never visible from the outside. In wild Smyrna-type figs, tiny fig wasps (Blastophaga psenes) enter through a small opening to pollinate these internal flowers — a remarkable mutualistic relationship. Common figs (the entire Raintree catalog) bypass this entirely and develop fruit parthenocarpically, with no wasps required and no seeds inside. This is why home-grown figs from Raintree varieties have soft, seedless interiors.
Where to plant
Sun and site
Plant figs where they will receive at least 8 hours of direct sunlight measured in early summer (late June through early August). Adequate sun drives the initiation of new flower buds for the following season — without it, fruit production declines. Fruit flavor and sugar development are also tied closely to heat accumulation, so a warm, wind-protected location makes a meaningful difference, particularly in cooler climates. A south- or southwest-facing wall that reflects and retains heat is an excellent site. Avoid low-lying areas where cold air settles on still spring and fall nights.
Soil
Figs tolerate a wide range of soils provided drainage is good. They perform best in a fertile, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. If your soil is heavy or compacted, mix organic matter (compost or aged plant material) into a generous planting area — roughly 1½ to 2 times the diameter of the planting hole and up to a foot deep. A 2–4 inch mulch layer of straw, leaves, or wood chips applied after planting will continue to improve soil structure over time.
Figs will not tolerate waterlogged soil. Sandy soils that harbor root-knot nematodes are also problematic for figs. In nematode-prone areas, raised beds built with imported soil are a practical solution.
Spacing
Allow adequate space for both canopy and root system. Fig roots are shallow and spreading — keep trees at least 8–10 feet from foundations, irrigation lines, and hardscape. For orchard plantings, provide enough row spacing to move supplies in and fruit out at harvest.
Growing in containers
Figs can be grown in containers, which is especially practical in Zone 6 and colder where pots can be moved to an unheated garage or shed for winter protection. For a long-term container planting, a minimum final pot size of at least 20 gallons is needed. Work up to this gradually over several seasons rather than starting in a large container — allowing the root system to fill progressively smaller pots first produces a more stable, healthier tree.
- Use a quality potting mix with added compost; do not use garden soil in containers
- For larger pots, choose a mix with coarser particle size for better drainage
- Prune as a multi-stemmed bush to maintain plenty of productive one- and two-year-old wood
- Water until drainage occurs from the bottom; allow the top 1–2 inches to dry before watering again
- Container figs need more frequent watering and fertilizing than in-ground trees
Trees will grow larger in larger containers — make sure you have the equipment to move a heavy pot before sizing up. Work up gradually: small pot to medium to final size over several years.
Watering and feeding
Consistent moisture is the most important factor in establishing a young fig. As a general guide, trees in the ground need about 1 inch of water per week over the root zone — roughly ¾ to 1 gallon per square foot. For a typical three-foot planting area, that is approximately 7½ to 10 gallons per week from rain or irrigation.
Apply water deeply once or twice a week rather than in light daily doses — shallow frequent watering encourages shallow roots. The soil should be moist to about a foot deep, though the top inch or two can feel dry. In the Pacific Northwest, established figs need relatively little supplemental water once established, but the first two growing seasons are critical. In drier regions, permanent drip irrigation positioned at and beyond the drip line is essential.
Do not fertilize at planting time. For established trees, use a balanced all-purpose fertilizer or apply a couple of inches of well-rotted compost over the root zone. Apply only from late winter through early summer. Feeding after early summer encourages soft new growth that is far more vulnerable to winter cold damage. If a tree is producing one foot or more of new growth annually with healthy foliage, little or no fertilizer may be needed.
Excessive fertilizer increases disease susceptibility and can damage the tree. Use growth rate and foliage health as your guide — more fertilizer is not always better.
Pruning and training
Figs respond very well to pruning and can be maintained as a multi-stemmed shrub, open-center tree, or fan-espalier against a wall. Pruning timing is critical: it determines which crop you'll get and how much.
When to prune
Prune figs in late winter, after the worst cold has passed but before active growth begins. In the maritime PNW, late February through March is the typical window. Avoid late-summer or fall pruning — it stimulates soft new growth that won't harden off before winter, increasing cold damage risk. Light summer trimming to shape or remove suckers is acceptable, but save substantial cuts for late winter.
Breba vs main crop pruning strategy
This is the most important pruning decision for figs:
- To prioritize the breba crop (typical PNW strategy): preserve as much one-year-old wood as possible. Remove only crossing, damaged, or weak branches. Heavy winter pruning removes the wood that would carry next summer's breba crop.
- To prioritize the main crop: prune more aggressively to stimulate strong new vegetative growth. The main crop forms on this current-season wood. This is the strategy for warm-summer climates where the main crop ripens reliably.
- For both crops: take a balanced approach — light to moderate winter pruning that removes a portion of older wood while preserving enough one-year wood for breba production.
Training systems
- Open-center bush: the easiest form. Allow 3–5 main scaffold branches from a low trunk; maintain at 10 ft tall and 10 ft wide.
- Open-center small tree: single trunk to 2–3 ft, then 3–5 scaffolds. Cleaner under-tree access; somewhat more vulnerable to winter damage in Zone 7.
- Fan espalier:Â ideal against a south-facing wall in cool climates. Trains main branches in a fan pattern; maximizes wall heat and sun exposure on every branch.
- Container: maintain as a multi-stemmed bush 5–6 ft tall; renewal-prune annually to keep one- and two-year-old wood productive.
In the maritime PNW, your reliable harvest comes primarily from the breba crop. Prune lightly in late winter — remove suckers, damaged wood, and crossing branches, but preserve the bulk of one-year-old wood. Heavy renewal pruning sacrifices your most reliable PNW harvest. A south-facing wall espalier is the gold standard PNW fig training: every branch sees direct sun, and the wall provides night-time heat retention.
Harvesting figs
Unlike most tree fruit, figs do not continue to ripen once picked. They must be harvested fully ripe — and this is the single biggest determinant of fig flavor. A fig picked too early will never develop the deep sweetness, jam-like texture, or honey-aromatic notes of one allowed to ripen completely on the tree.
How to tell a fig is ripe
- Texture: a ripe fig is soft to gentle squeeze — yields easily, like a soft tomato. A firm fig is unripe.
- Hanging angle:Â ripe figs hang straight down from their stem; underripe figs sit out at an angle. As they ripen, the neck softens and the fruit droops.
- Color:Â reaches the variety's full mature color. Dark varieties darken to deep purple/black; light varieties yellow or turn amber.
- "Eye" (ostiole):Â the small opening at the bottom may open slightly and exude a tiny drop of clear nectar when fully ripe.
- Easy detachment: a fully ripe fig releases from the branch with a slight tug — no force needed.
When to harvest
Pick figs in the morning before the day heats up — they'll be firmer, less prone to bursting, and easier to handle. Check the tree daily during peak ripening; figs can go from perfect to overripe in 24–48 hours. Wear long sleeves and gloves if you're sensitive to fig latex — the milky sap from cut stems can irritate skin.
Storage and use
- Fresh: 2–3 days at room temperature; 5–7 days refrigerated. Best eaten the day picked.
- Freezing:Â whole or halved on a tray, then bagged. Keeps 6+ months; texture softens but flavor is preserved.
- Drying: figs dry beautifully in a dehydrator (135°F for 12–24 hrs) or a low oven. Dried figs keep 6–12 months.
- Preserves: fig jam, conserves, and chutneys are exceptional — the natural pectin in figs makes them easy to set.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Picking too early. The single biggest fig-growing mistake. Figs do not ripen off the tree — patience yields incomparable flavor. If in doubt, wait another day.
- Heavy winter pruning in cool climates. Removes the one-year-old wood that carries the breba crop, your most reliable PNW harvest. Prune lightly until you understand your variety's crop pattern.
- Late-summer or fall fertilizing. Stimulates soft growth that won't harden before winter. Stop feeding by early summer.
- Overwatering or planting in wet soil. Figs will not tolerate waterlogged roots. Drainage matters more than fertility.
- Choosing a warm-climate variety in a cool-summer location. A Mission fig will produce beautiful fruit in California but rarely ripens its main crop in Seattle. Match variety to climate — Desert King exists for a reason.
- Underestimating root spread. Fig roots are shallow and aggressive. Keep trees at least 8–10 ft from foundations, irrigation lines, and septic systems.
- Skipping the south-facing wall. In Zone 7 and cool-summer regions, a south- or southwest-facing wall is the single biggest yield boost a fig can get. Use it if you have one.
- Leaving fallen figs on the ground. Dropped fruit attracts wasps, rodents, and creates a slip hazard. Pick up daily during harvest.
Common problems
Ask your local cooperative extension office about insects and diseases most common in your region. The following are the most frequently encountered issues with figs.
Scattered small yellow circles on upper leaf surfaces — particularly the second and third leaves from the branch tip — with brown russeting at circle margins; yellow areas may appear on fruit. Heavy infestations can cause early leaf drop, reduce fruit quality, and damage terminal buds. This mite also transmits fig mosaic virus.
- Lime sulfur spray at leaf fall and again at bud swell in spring
- Remove stem tips with swollen buds during the dormant season
- Wettable sulfur applied every 1–2 weeks during summer for active infestations — note it leaves residue
- Systemic miticide for severe infestations; crop must be sacrificed if used during the growing season
- Monitor with a 20× hand lens about one month after leaf emergence
Yellow mottled, water-soaked-looking patterns on leaf surfaces; may appear pale or strongly yellow, or as yellowing between veins; surface russeting possible. Fruit on some varieties may be discolored, undersized, or drop early. Vectored exclusively by the fig mite Aceria fici — a single mite feeding is sufficient to infect a healthy plant. Also transmissible by grafting, but not by seed. Many figs carry the virus but remain asymptomatic; symptoms can be sporadic and may diminish after trees establish in-ground.
- No known cure — prevention is the only management approach
- Controlling fig mite populations reduces transmission risk significantly
- Always start with symptom-free propagation material; never propagate from infected trees
- Remove and destroy heavily symptomatic plants
Deer browse figs readily — shortened, browsed branches; leaves munched; young plants pulled up entirely. Damage can be severe enough to kill young trees during establishment.
- Fencing or cages at least 8 feet tall — at Raintree, an 8-foot woven wire fence has proven most reliable
- Plastic mesh, electric, or woven wire fencing are all options
- Repellents are inconsistent and require constant reapplication; not a reliable season-long solution
Fruit disappears or has gaping holes as figs soften. Birds can strip a tree quickly once fruit begins to color and soften.
- Bird netting draped over the tree is the most reliable protection; secure all edges
- Reflective bird scare tape can be a useful supplemental deterrent
- Cages are practical for smaller or container-grown trees
Small pear-shaped insects (1/32–1/8 inch) clustering on leaf undersides and stems; leaves may show red blisters or curl downward; sooty mold on stems. Rarely threatens established trees but can weaken young plantings during establishment.
- Natural predators (ladybugs, parasitic wasps) often provide adequate control — encourage with nearby plantings of dill or yarrow
- Knock aphids off with a firm water spray
- Insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or delayed dormant oil for heavier infestations
- Control ants if present — they actively protect aphid colonies from predators
Bark eaten in a band from soil level up to 8 inches high; roots also chewed under snow where mulch is deep or grass is tall near the trunk. Girdling can kill the tree above the injury.
- Keep mulch 4–6 inches away from the trunk at all times
- Keep grass and vegetation cleared 1–2 feet from the base
- Wrap a vinyl tree guard around the lower trunk until the tree is well established
- Voles and mice also chew roots; rabbits browse up to 8 inches high, particularly on young trees
Poking-type feeding damage on fruit followed by decay and deformity in surrounding tissue; brown spots may appear in stored fruit. Feeding begins in spring as temperatures rise and continues until adults go dormant for winter.

- Some broad-spectrum insecticides may help; research on effective controls is ongoing
- BMSB overwinters in sheltered dry areas such as buildings — vacuum rather than crush (squishing releases defensive odor)
Lesions on upper leaf surfaces followed by orange spore-producing structures on leaf undersides; may also affect fruit and stems. Most likely in warm, humid conditions. Rust diseases require an alternate host — removing it within roughly 900 feet may help reduce pressure.
