Goji Berries
Brilliant scarlet fruit on an adaptable, drought-tolerant shrub — the goji berry rewards growers across a wide range of climates with a harvest that dries, freezes, and brews beautifully. Well-drained soil and full sun are the keys to success.

Why grow goji berries?
Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) are among the most broadly adaptable fruiting shrubs available to home gardeners. Drought-tolerant once established, alkaline-soil friendly, and free of the specific climate demands that limit many fruit crops, goji performs across a remarkably wide range of North American growing conditions — from the arid intermountain West to the humid mid-Atlantic to the cold northern Plains.
The fruit itself is vivid scarlet-orange, oval, and ½ to 1 inch long. Fresh, ripe goji berries are mildly sweet with a flavor often described as a blend of tomato, cranberry, and raisin — juicy and pleasant, with none of the bitterness of underripe fruit. They ripen in waves from late summer through frost, allowing extended harvests over several weeks rather than a compressed window that requires immediate processing. Dried goji berries — by far the most common commercial form — concentrate the flavor into something sweeter and chewier, excellent for trail mixes, baked goods, tea, and smoothies. Berries also freeze well for long-term storage.
Goji vines are ornamental as well as productive. The small, purple, five-petaled flowers bloom along flexible arching canes from late spring through summer and are attractive to bees. The vivid scarlet fruit that follows is striking in the landscape and supports birds, though bird netting will be necessary if you want to keep your harvest.
The most important considerations before planting are drainage and pH. Goji tolerates a wide range of soils but demands excellent drainage — roots are sensitive to prolonged waterlogging, and poorly drained sites are the most common cause of failure. Unlike most fruits, goji performs well in neutral to mildly alkaline soils (pH 6.8–8.1), making it an excellent choice for regions where soil pH is too high for blueberries or raspberries.
Goji spreads aggressively by root suckers and, in suitable climates, by seed. Utah State University Extension notes that in some areas goji is considered a weed due to its tendency to sucker and spread. The University of Washington Horticulture Library (citing The Oregonian) recommends containing plants with a 4 × 5-foot square support structure in gardens where spread is a concern. In the PNW and similar temperate climates, monitor for suckering and remove unwanted stems promptly — this is also good for redirecting the plant's energy to fruit production.
Site selection
Sun and exposure
Goji berries require a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight measured in early summer (late June through early August) for reliable production. Sun exposure drives flower bud initiation for the following season — without adequate light, flowering and fruit set are reduced. Carbohydrate production and fruit flavor development are also directly tied to sun exposure.
In hot, dry climates where temperatures regularly exceed 85°F during the growing season, afternoon shade is beneficial. Flowers and developing fruit can fail to set properly at sustained high temperatures above 85°F. In the Pacific Northwest and most cool-temperate locations, this is not a concern — site for maximum sun to ensure good ripening and fruit development.
Avoid frost pockets and low-lying areas where cold air pools on still, clear nights. Goji breaks dormancy and begins new growth in spring — that tender new growth is frost-sensitive even though the dormant crown and roots are quite cold-hardy.
Soil and drainage
Goji tolerates a wide range of soil types — sandy, loamy, or moderately clay — but drainage is non-negotiable. Avoid any site where water pools after rainfall or where the soil remains saturated for extended periods. If your native soil is heavy clay, amend the planting area with coarse compost and plant on a slight raised mound to encourage drainage away from the crown.
Unlike most fruits, goji performs well in neutral to mildly alkaline soils. The preferred pH range is 6.8–8.1, with an optimum around 7.0–7.2 (Raintree Nursery; GrowOrganic.com). Test your soil pH before planting — if it is acidic (below 6.5), raise it with ground limestone. Goji does not require the acidic conditions that blueberries, raspberries, or kiwi demand, and alkaline amendments that would harm those crops will benefit goji. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers and acidic amendments.
Improve the planting area by working 1–2 inches of plant-based organic matter (compost, aged wood chips, or coconut coir) into a zone 1.5–2 times the diameter of the planting hole and up to one foot deep. For containers, use a potting mix amended with compost, sand or perlite for drainage, and lime to bring pH to the 6.8–7.0 range.
Spacing
Space goji plants 4–6 feet apart in the row for managed, pruned shrubs. This spacing promotes good airflow and light penetration, simplifies harvesting, and reduces disease pressure. If you intend to trellis plants or allow more vigorous growth, increase spacing to 6–8 feet. Allow sufficient room for the root system as well — goji sends out lateral roots and suckers; surrounding the base with landscape fabric or maintained bare soil helps contain the plant's spread.
Goji is well-suited to the Pacific Northwest's temperate maritime climate. Western WA and OR soils are frequently in the acidic range — test before planting and amend with lime to bring pH up to the 6.8–7.2 target range. South- or southwest-facing exposures that maximize reflected warmth will support better ripening. PNW soils can be heavy and poorly drained in low spots — site on well-drained ground or build a raised planting mound.
Pollination
Goji berry is self-fertile — a single plant can produce fruit without a second pollinator variety. This is a meaningful advantage for small gardens or growers with limited space. However, like many self-fertile plants, goji often produces larger crops and more consistent fruit set when a second genetically distinct plant is present nearby. Utah State University Extension and several other sources note that hand pollination may be needed in areas where bee activity is limited.
Bees are the primary pollinators of goji flowers. The small purple blossoms are attractive to honeybees and native bees from late spring through summer. Avoid applying insecticides during the bloom window — goji blooms over an extended period, and pesticide applications during active flowering will reduce pollination and fruit set.
In the PNW, cool spring temperatures can suppress bee activity during early bloom. If you observe open flowers but poor fruit set in a given year, hand pollination with a soft brush — transferring pollen from flower to flower in the morning when blooms are freshly open — is a practical supplement.
Choosing varieties
Goji is still a relatively new crop in North American home gardens, and named cultivar availability is more limited than for established fruit crops. The varieties below are the most widely grown and available; Raintree's catalog reflects current stock. Selecting a named cultivar from a reputable nursery is strongly preferred over unnamed seedling stock — cultivar selection ensures consistent plant quality and fruiting performance (Utah State University Extension).

Lycium barbarum (red/common goji) is the species most widely grown for fruit in North America and the most heavily researched commercially. Lycium chinense (Chinese desert-thorn or Chinese boxthorn) is a related species also grown for edible fruit and leaves; it is sometimes confused with L. barbarum but has somewhat different cold hardiness (Zones 6–9) and is more common in Asian market contexts. At Raintree, plants listed as goji berry are L. barbarum unless otherwise specified.
Planting
When to plant
Plant container-grown goji in early spring after the last frost date has passed, or in fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes. Bare-root stock should be planted in spring before the plants break dormancy — soak bare roots in water for 12–15 hours before planting to ensure the roots are fully hydrated and to minimize transplant shock. For container stock, water the plant thoroughly an hour before planting.
Planting steps
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and approximately the same depth. Backfill with amended native soil. Set the plant at the same depth as it was in the container — the crown (where stem meets root) should be level with the surrounding soil surface, not buried. Do not add fertilizer directly into the planting hole — it can burn tender new roots. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch (straw, leaves, or wood chips) immediately, keeping mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the crown to prevent rot and deter vole activity.
If you plan to trellis or train the plant against a fence or wall, install supports at planting time. Beginning to tie and guide canes in the first season establishes the framework you will work with for years to come. Goji canes are flexible when young — this is the easiest time to direct them.
In western WA and OR, goji planted in spring establishes rapidly in the mild, moist shoulder season. Water consistently through the first summer — despite goji's drought tolerance at maturity, first-year root systems depend on regular moisture. Apply lime at planting in acidic PNW soils. If planting in heavy clay soils common to western WA lowlands, build a raised planting mound 8–12 inches high and 2–3 feet in diameter to ensure adequate drainage through the wet winter months.
Pruning and training
Left unpruned, goji grows as an open, sprawling multi-stemmed shrub with arching canes that root where they contact soil — attractive as a hedgerow plant but inefficient for fruit production and difficult to harvest. Annual pruning and some form of training significantly improve yield, fruit size, air circulation, and ease of harvest. The good news: goji fruits on the current season's new lateral shoots arising from last year's wood, so annual pruning renews productive wood and keeps the plant manageable.
Choose your training approach
Open Bush
Select 3–5 strong permanent stems; prune to keep the plant 5–7 feet tall and open in the center. Best for most home gardens. Lowest maintenance once established.
Single-Trunk Standard
Select one central stem as the permanent trunk; remove all side shoots up to 12 inches above soil. Allow lateral branches to form above that height. Good for containers and small spaces. Requires a stake.
Trellis / Fan
Train against a fence, wall, or wire trellis. Tie main canes to supports; space laterals evenly for light penetration. Excellent for high-density planting or against a south-facing wall. Annual pruning similar to espalier fruit trees or fan-trained blackberries.
Pruning by year
Annual pruning — late winter / early spring
Prune goji during the dormant season — late winter to early spring, as buds begin to swell (Thompson & Morgan; GrowOrganic.com; Old Farmer's Almanac). Waiting until buds begin to break makes it easier to identify winter-killed wood, which should be removed first. Unlike kiwi, goji does not bleed heavily from late-season cuts, so the timing window is broader — late January through March in most temperate climates.
During annual pruning: remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches; shorten lateral branches by approximately 12 inches from their tips to encourage new productive shoots; remove any of the oldest, thickest canes that are producing less vigorously than younger replacement canes — these can be cut to the ground, as goji readily regenerates from the base. Remove all suckers arising from the root zone unless you want to establish a new plant from them (suckers can be dug and transplanted successfully).
In late spring or early summer, pinch off the top 2–3 inches of terminal growth on new shoots to encourage lateral branching — this is where most fruit will develop. This "tip pruning" is analogous to pinching snapdragons or dahlias and significantly increases fruit-bearing laterals on young plants.
Fruit develops on the current season's lateral shoots arising from wood formed the previous year. Removing all of last year's wood in winter eliminates this season's productive potential. The goal of winter pruning is renewal and thinning — shortening and managing last year's canes, not eliminating them. Maintain a mix of 1- and 2-year-old framework canes while systematically removing the oldest, least-productive wood each year (Thompson & Morgan; Old Farmer's Almanac).
Watering and feeding
Established goji is notably drought-tolerant compared to most fruiting plants — one of its most valuable traits for growers in dry or water-limited regions. That said, consistent moisture during establishment and during fruit sizing and ripening meaningfully improves yield and fruit size. Young plants in their first 1–2 seasons require regular, deep watering to build the root system that underpins that eventual drought tolerance.
For established plants, target approximately 1 inch of water per week over the root zone during the growing season — equivalent to 7–10 gallons per week for a typical 3-foot-diameter planting area. Water deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly every day. The soil should be moist but not soggy to about 12 inches deep; the top inch or two may feel dry and the plant still be adequately watered. Drip irrigation is ideal: it delivers water to the root zone while keeping foliage dry, reducing powdery mildew risk.
In the PNW, spring rainfall typically reduces supplemental irrigation needs through May or June. Supplemental watering becomes more critical in July through September — exactly when fruit is sizing and ripening.
Goji requires minimal fertilization. Excessive nitrogen produces vigorous leafy growth at the expense of fruit and increases pruning workload. A single application of a balanced organic fertilizer or 2–3 inches of well-rotted compost over the root zone in early spring is generally sufficient. Avoid fertilizing after early summer — late-season nitrogen encourages soft new growth susceptible to winter damage. If the plant is producing adequate new growth and has healthy green foliage, additional fertilizer may not be needed at all.
Maintain a 2–4 inch mulch layer of straw, leaves, or wood chips over the root zone year-round to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and improve soil structure. Keep mulch pulled back 4–6 inches from the crown to discourage crown rot and vole activity.
Harvest
Goji berries ripen in waves from approximately late July or August through the first hard frost — ripening is indeterminate, meaning individual berries on the same plant ripen at different times over a multi-week window. Check plants frequently as the season advances and harvest ripe berries every few days.
How to tell when ripe
A ripe goji berry is fully orange-red, slightly soft to gentle pressure, and detaches cleanly from the stem with a gentle sideways tug (pulling straight back often crushes the soft fruit). Underripe berries are orange, firm, and may be slightly bitter or bland. Do not harvest too early — flavor and sweetness develop fully on the vine. If a berry does not release easily, it is not ready.
Harvest into shallow containers to avoid crushing fruit at the bottom. Ripe fresh berries bruise easily — one of the reasons dried goji dominates commercially. Handle gently and avoid piling fruit more than 1–2 layers deep.
Alternatively, spread a tarp or fine mesh netting under the plant and gently shake each cane — ripe fruit will drop; unripe fruit will hold. This method is fast but requires sorting and immediate processing of dropped fruit.
Fresh goji berries are highly perishable — they typically keep for only 2–3 days at room temperature and up to about a week under refrigeration. This is a primary reason that dried, frozen, or juiced forms dominate commercial use. At harvest, plan to either process the fruit immediately or freeze it within 1–2 days. Freezing preserves color, flavor, and nutritional value well. Drying — either in a food dehydrator at 105°F for approximately 3 days, or by laying berries on trays in full sun — is the most traditional preservation method and concentrates flavor significantly. Freeze-drying (when available) better preserves nutritional content than heat drying.
Uses for the harvest
Dried goji berries can be eaten as a snack, added to trail mixes, baked goods, soups, and stir-fries, or steeped as tea (1 tablespoon dried berries per cup of hot water, 8–10 minutes). Fresh berries are juicy and mild-sweet; they can be eaten out of hand, added to smoothies, or juiced. Berries freeze excellently for use throughout the year. Young leaves are edible and used in some cuisines for soups and herbal infusions — harvest sparingly from vigorous new shoots.
Growing in containers
Goji can be grown in containers, though it is not a long-term container plant for most growers — the vigorous root system and suckering habit make pots limiting after several years. That said, container culture is practical for patios, decks, or wherever in-ground planting is not an option, especially with attentive management and a single-trunk training approach.
Use a minimum 10-gallon container (Raintree Nursery recommendation); 15–20 gallons will better support a productive, multi-year plant. Use a quality potting mix amended with compost, coarse perlite or sand for drainage, and lime to raise pH to the 6.8–7.0 range — garden soil and unamended potting mix are typically too acidic. Gradually increase container size over the first several years rather than starting in a very large pot; this supports healthy root development and prevents waterlogging in excess soil volume.
Container goji requires more frequent watering and more attentive fertilization than in-ground plants — the root system cannot range broadly for moisture and nutrients. In Zone 6 and colder, container roots are vulnerable to freeze in winter; move containers to an unheated but frost-protected location (garage, outbuilding) once the plant is dormant. Provide a sturdy stake or trellis support within the container.
Container goji on a PNW deck or patio benefits from the warmth reflected off south-facing walls and paving — this microclimate warmth helps extend the ripening season in cool-summer years. Ensure containers drain freely; PNW winters bring sustained rainfall that will waterlog any container without adequate drainage holes and a well-draining mix. Refresh the top few inches of potting mix each spring and apply lime annually to maintain the target pH in the container environment.
Common problems
Deer are strongly attracted to goji foliage and will browse young plants heavily, sometimes pulling them from the ground entirely. The large, soft leaves are palatable, and deer do not appear deterred by the mild thorns on most cultivars.

- Commercial repellents offer short-term deterrence but require frequent reapplication and are not reliable season-long
- Once plants are well-established and growing above primary browse height, deer damage typically decreases
Birds — particularly blue jays, robins, starlings, and sparrows — will aggressively harvest ripe goji berries. The vivid red-orange fruit is highly visible and attractive to a wide range of bird species. Bird netting is the most effective control.

Voles and mice chew bark from the base of goji canes at ground level, typically under snow cover or dense mulch in winter. Girdling damage — a band of missing bark circling the cane — kills individual canes. Rabbits cause similar damage up to 8–10 inches above ground.

White powdery fungal growth on leaves and shoots; stunted or distorted new growth. Worse in shaded areas or when rain is combined with mild temperatures. Infects overwintering buds at shoot tips. More common in dense, poorly-pruned plants with limited airflow.

- Minimize shading and maximize airflow with open, well-pruned plant structure
- Lime sulfur, milk solution, or potassium bicarbonate spray in spring and early summer as preventive measures
- Prune out and remove infected shoots; do not compost
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which promotes the soft new growth most susceptible to mildew
An eriophyid mite specific to goji that causes galls on leaves and shoots. Utah State University Extension identifies this as the primary insect pest of goji in Utah, and it has been reported in other western states. Infested tissue shows abnormal swellings or puckering at the site of feeding.
- Prune out and destroy infested shoots as soon as galls are detected
- Sulfur-based miticides or dormant oil applied in late winter may reduce overwintering populations
- Contact your local cooperative extension office for current management recommendations — this is a relatively new crop pest in North America and guidance continues to develop
Spider mites cause stippling and bronzing of leaves, particularly during hot, dry weather — similar to their behavior on other Solanaceae crops. Aphids feed on new growth, causing curling and distortion. Both pests are generally manageable on established plants but can weaken new growth.
- Spider mites: maintain adequate irrigation; water-stressed plants are far more susceptible. Insecticidal soap with ultra-light oil for active infestations. Encourage predatory mite populations by avoiding broad-spectrum pesticides
- Aphids: natural predators (lady beetles, parasitic wasps) often provide adequate control on established plants. Strong water spray dislodges colonies from stems and shoots. Insecticidal soap for heavier infestations
- Potato leafhopper and thrips have also been reported on goji in some states — watch for leaf-edge browning (leafhopper) or silvery streaking on leaves (thrips) and consult your local extension office
BMSB is established across much of the PNW and can feed on goji fruit, causing brown corky spots beneath the skin. Goji is less preferred than some other soft fruits but can be affected in areas with high BMSB populations, particularly as fruit colors and ripens.

- If found overwintering in or near your home in fall, vacuum rather than crushing to avoid the defensive odor
Seasonal care calendar
