Native to East Asia and one of the few nitrogen-fixing fruiting shrubs, goumi brings silver-leafed beauty, fragrant spring flowers, and scarlet summer berries to almost any garden. Tolerant of poor soils, drought, and neglect — this is an unusual edible that genuinely over-delivers.

Why grow goumi?
Goumi (Elaeagnus multiflora) is one of those rare plants that solves multiple garden problems at once. It produces edible fruit. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with root-zone actinobacteria, improving soil fertility for itself and neighboring plants. It tolerates poor soils, drought, and neglect that would defeat most fruiting plants. Its silvery foliage is ornamentally distinctive, and its small, intensely fragrant flowers in spring attract pollinators in extraordinary numbers. For a permaculture planting, a food forest, or any garden where you want a productive, low-maintenance plant, goumi is difficult to improve upon.
The berries themselves are small — roughly the size of a large cherry — bright scarlet at full ripeness, and dotted with silver speckling from the same trichomes that give the foliage its silvery color. Their flavor is tart-sweet, somewhat astringent when slightly underripe, and quite good when fully ripe. They can be eaten fresh, made into jam, used in sauces, or juiced. The berries are notably high in lycopene (exceptionally high among common fruits), vitamins A and E, and essential fatty acids in the seed — an unusual nutritional profile (Home Orchard Education Center).
Goumi's nitrogen-fixing ability is particularly valuable in orchard settings. Intercropped near young fruit trees just outside their drip line, goumi improves soil fertility as it establishes, benefiting the entire planting system. It is not aggressive or invasive — unlike its relative autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata), goumi is not listed as invasive in any US state and spreads only from seed, not by root suckering.
Goumi (Elaeagnus multiflora) is often confused with autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata), which is listed as invasive across much of the eastern United States. Goumi is not invasive — it does not produce the aggressive seed dispersal or population expansion that makes autumn olive a problem. Varieties
Named goumi varieties are selections for improved fruit size, flavor, and productivity compared to the straight species. Within the scope of plants commonly available at Raintree, the following are the most widely grown.

When planting for maximum yield, plant two different goumi varieties rather than two plants of the same variety. Site selection and planting
Sun and exposure
Goumi requires a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for reliable fruiting. It is more shade-tolerant than most fruiting shrubs and will grow vigorously in partial shade, but fruit production declines with reduced sun exposure. Full sun (8+ hours) maximizes yield and flavor development. Unlike most fruit plants, goumi's nitrogen-fixing root system means it performs remarkably well in poor, thin, or low-fertility soils where other plants struggle.
Soil
Goumi tolerates an exceptionally wide range of soil conditions — from sand to clay, poor to moderately fertile, acidic to near-alkaline. The optimum pH range is 6.0–6.5, but goumi grows acceptably across a much broader range. Because of its nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with root bacteria, it does not require — and may actually be disadvantaged by — heavy fertilization. Over-fertilized goumi tends to produce excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruiting. A site with naturally moderate to low fertility is often ideal. Spacing and size management
Goumi can reach 15 feet tall and wide without pruning, though most sources describe typical garden size as 6–10 feet. Plan for a plant that will need periodic pruning to stay manageable at the size you want — 8–10 feet is a realistic unpruned size in most home gardens over several years. Space plants at least 8–10 feet apart to allow for mature spread. For a paired planting of two varieties (recommended for best yield), position them 8–10 feet apart.
Planting
Plant in spring or fall. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Backfill with native soil — goumi does not typically benefit from soil amendment given its nitrogen-fixing ability, and in poor soils this is actually to your advantage. Water thoroughly at planting. Apply 2–4 inches of organic mulch over the root zone, kept pulled back 4–6 inches from the crown. Fertilizer is generally not needed at planting and may actually suppress the beneficial root bacteria that make goumi so adaptable.
Goumi is well-suited to western Washington and Oregon. It thrives in the mild PNW winters and is less demanding about summer heat than many fruiting shrubs. The fragrant spring bloom often begins in April in the PNW — watch for frost-tolerant flower buds opening even in cold springs. Western WA and OR growers in Zones 7–8 may see fruit ripening as early as late May through June. Goumi makes an effective companion planting near young fruit trees, where its nitrogen fixation benefits the developing orchard soil.
Pollination
Goumi is partially self-fertile — it will set some fruit from a single plant. However, planting two different goumi varieties nearby consistently increases both the number of fruit set and the size of individual berries. This is cross-pollination improvement, not a strict pollination requirement. The pollinizer should be within 100 feet of the plant it is serving, with a reasonably clear path for bees. Bloom timing in spring is generally compatible between named varieties.
Bees are the primary pollinators. Goumi's flowers are small and intensely fragrant, and in full bloom a goumi shrub is a significant pollinator resource — the attraction extends to bumblebees, mason bees, and honeybees alike. Avoid any pesticide application during the bloom window.
Watering and feeding
Established goumi is notably drought-tolerant. Once the root system is developed (typically after the second or third growing season), supplemental irrigation during dry periods is helpful for fruit sizing but is often not strictly necessary in areas with moderate summer rainfall. During the first two growing seasons — particularly the first summer — consistent moisture is critical for establishment; target approximately 1 inch per week over the root zone, watering deeply once or twice per week rather than lightly every day.
Fertilization is where goumi differs most from other fruiting shrubs. Its nitrogen-fixing root bacteria supply a significant portion of its own nitrogen needs. Over-fertilizing — particularly with nitrogen-rich fertilizers — can actually reduce fruit production by stimulating excessive vegetative growth and suppressing the beneficial root bacteria. In most garden settings, a 2-inch layer of compost applied over the root zone in early spring is sufficient. A balanced fertilizer at half-recommended rates can be used on poor soils, but heavy feeding is counterproductive (Home Orchard Education Center).
Pruning and training
Goumi can be maintained at any reasonable size with pruning. Without pruning it will grow to 6–10 feet (occasionally larger) and spread to a similar width. Annual pruning is not strictly required for healthy fruiting, but it helps manage size and improves air circulation. Some varieties have soft spines on branches — wear gloves when pruning.
Prune in late winter or early spring before growth begins, or lightly after harvest in summer. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. To limit size, cut back the longest branches to a lateral. To rejuvenate an overgrown plant, remove the oldest, most unproductive canes at the base over two to three years. Goumi responds well to hard pruning and will recover vigorously.
Harvest
Goumi berries ripen in early to mid-summer — typically May through June depending on climate and location. At Raintree's location north of Mount St. Helens, expect ripening in June. Berries ripen over a period of several weeks in sequence, not all at once, which extends the harvest window. Fully ripe berries are bright scarlet, slightly soft, and detach easily with a gentle twist. Under-ripe berries are noticeably more astringent and less pleasant to eat fresh — wait for full color development and softness.
Fresh ripe goumi can be eaten straight from the bush, though some find the slight tartness more enjoyable when the berries are used in cooking, jam, sauces, or juiced. The juice is deeply colored and nutritionally rich. Refrigerate harvested berries promptly; they do not keep as long as aronia or honeyberry and are best used within a few days of harvest or frozen for longer storage.
Growing in containers
Goumi can be grown in a container of at least 25 gallons. Use a quality potting mix with added compost — do not use garden soil. Gradually increase container size over the first few years rather than starting in the largest pot immediately. Ensure excellent drainage. Container goumi will require more frequent watering than in-ground plants; fertilize lightly in spring and early summer with a balanced fertilizer. In Zone 6 and colder, move containers to an unheated but frost-protected structure in winter. Heavy pruning will be necessary to maintain container plants at a manageable size.
Common problems
Goumi is notably free of serious pest and disease problems. Multiple sources — including home growers and horticultural references — describe it as essentially pest-free in most garden conditions. This is one of its strongest attributes as a low-maintenance fruiting plant.

Birds will harvest ripe goumi berries aggressively. The bright scarlet color of ripe berries is highly visible and attractive to birds. Harvest pressure can be substantial, particularly from robins, cedar waxwings, and other fruit-eating species.

Goumi is noted for being relatively deer-resistant compared to many fruiting shrubs, likely due to the silvery trichomes on the foliage and branches.
